It's a win-win for Holland - he gets a chance to rebuild his value, and the Sox get a chance to cash in on that higher value.

So I again ask - what's the downside?

It certainly is a win-win for Holland. He finds a sucker to overpay him. So whats the downside? Well considering the direction we are going, down the toilet, maybe just spending 6 mm for nothing means nothing, but IMHO expecting value in return based on his past injury problems is expecting green cheese from the man in the moon. Just don't see the value, period. All I see is pairing Holland  with the other star pitcher they have James Shields. It just makes me go UGH. Maybe the value is only innings eaters. But 6 mm for an innings eater seems too high for me. Maybe I just dont like the Koolaid flavor they are serving.

6MM for an innings eater is the going rate, like it or not.

At least we've got a guy occupying space in the rotation to let our young arms develop in AAA or in the bullpen.

I suppose, provided he doesn't have another injury and end  up on the disabled list for most of the season. Its a g@mble. A 6mm g@mble he stays healthy I guess. Does that make me like it better? NO. Its still a wooden nickel and I am not buying.

Of the prospects traded this offseason, we have gotten 6 of top 7. That sounds better.

Lot of interest for Q. I like Yanks and Astros thus far, not sure what exact packages are but I like their prospects.

IMHO we have a lot of needs. I see CF as a big need, eventually C also, and a power bat for RF and LF. Noticing the Pirate deal for a CFer interested me, but I don't think he hits much. 3B is also an issue if they trade Frazier as rumored. Certainly the Pirates are a good landing spot for Q.

Sounds like you still expect to compete. We want to suck. We need to suck big time for 2-3 years. So stop clamoring for better players. Jeesh. This is a complete rebuild, it is how it is done if you want to do it correctly.

Exactly.

"Plugging a hole" = finding someone, preferably with all 4 limbs (not 100% required), to occupy space in the lineup or on the field until prospects are groomed to fill those positions.

The primary goal of the big league club at this point is to give guys a chance to build their value until the next "core" group is ready to perform. Pretty much the only players from the 2016 roster whom I would consider untouchable are Anderson, Fulmer, and Rodon.

Be as awful as you can be, so you get great draft opportunities as well as extra draft money. Not sure it matters anymore for international, but it may. Just for about 2 years. The kids start playing in that 2nd or 3rd year. So still may suck for a couple more years. It should all be worth it in the long run.

There's a rumor out there of a potential three-way deal.    Quintana to the Pirates, McCutchen to the Yankees, prospects to the White Sox.

FWIW

Lets talk English instead of double talk here. We got all these players for Eaton and Sale, right? And these players aren't even destined to be major leaguers this year right? And as for talent the players who played for us lately haven't been capable of dragging us out of the cellar, so of course we are going to suck. And who here is saying that if we trade for position players this year they are going to play in Chicago right away? Stop trying to play pin the tail on the donkey. We need to stop trading talent away for 20 pitchers who are stuck in the minors. Last I checked there are 9 positions on the field, not just one. We need talent for all 9 positions. If there are good position players to trade for then we need these too. That's all I am saying.

And as for sucking, I don't see anything we have traded for so far that is going to change the sucking this year.

Teams are always looking for pitching. I am sure we are going to pick up some hitters for guys like Q, Robertson, Frazier, maybe Abreu. Otherwise, trade some of our young stud pitchers for some young stud hitters.

We picked up our 2Bman of the future and likely our CF of the future in Moncada and Basabe. We have our SS of the future in Anderson. We could use a real good young 3Bman and some corner outfielders. I would really like another future catcher, I am skeptical about Collins and his defense. I would not expect any of these guys in the bigs in 2017 except Anderson.

Hope we get Adam Frazier in any deal with the Buc's. He's really under-rated, but all he does is get the bat on the ball all the time

Basabe is an unproductive minor leaguer, he's not a future anything. Call is a better prospect.

I will definitely go against you on that. I like Call, but Basabe may end up being a real stud. Look at his extra base power already, he was in a pitchers league as well. I am almost willing to bet he ends up being the best player in either deal thus far (but I love Lopez). I think Call will be a good player as well, just does not have the ceiling Basabe does.

The other kid who may be a big sleeper is the A ball pitcher from the Bosox, was it Cruz? Anyway, he jumped from DSL to SALLY league and held his own, throws uppers 90s. No one jumps from DSL to SALLY league, that is incredible.

White Sox Want Conforto From Mets For David Robertson

By Mark Polishuk | December 22, 2016 at 7:53am CDT

•The Mets “haven’t made a serious inquiry” about a trade for White Sox closer David Robertson this winter or at the last trade deadline, though New York hasn’t ruled out the possibility, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports.  Chicago would ask for Michael Conforto in any Robertson deal, however, so it could be hard for the two sides to settle on a deal.  The White Sox weren’t looking for a big prospect return when they explored moving Robertson at the deadline, Ackert writes, though their current ask of Conforto reflects this offseason’s huge market for relief pitching.
•Also in regards to a possible Robertson trade, since the Mets are unlikely to deal Conforto or another young talent for the closer, Metsblog.com’s Matthew Cerrone proposes that the White Sox should swap Robertson for Jay Bruce if they’re unable to find a team willing to surrender a good prospect for Robertson’s services.  The Sox would, if nothing else, save some money in the deal, as Bruce is owed $13MM in 2017 while Robertson is owed $25MM through 2018.  Bruce could also become a good trade chip at the deadline, which would allow the White Sox to eventually get the prospect they want.  The Mets would be taking on extra salary in this proposed deal, though allocating that money towards a strong relief arm is a better fit for the club than paying for a superfluous corner outfielder.

I do not get why Robertson is not worth a lot. Decent contract, still throws hard, he can still close and might be better as setup guy (maybe in his makeup).
