so.... who goes next?

Quien sabe. While I agree that pitching wins championships and pitching is nice to acquire, where are the bats besides Moncada? We have a farm system void of ML talent. Position player of greatest need could be CF and then catcher.

After Eaton's defensive gems in RF this year, I am very sad to see him go. Best RFer I saw. Good bat too. After that I am very unhappy to see the Avasail experiment continue.

It'll be ok. As JJ used to say if they arnt going to be good, be comically bad. They are going to be comically bad at some point this year after the selloff.

As for who's next, probably Frazier or Abreau. I heard Denver is after a 1Bman. If Frazier and Abreau go this team will be a punch and judy team. This team wont win 50 games next year. No pitching or hitting.

I definitely want to see some big time bats added as well. Quintana is the obvious last key player that can bring back a big haul of position prospects but there's also building through the draft since the Sox should be bad enough next year to warrant a high pick (and most likely again in 2018). They can also trade some of this elite prospect pitching they're loading up on now for hitting later. The Cubs are very thin on pitching prospects so maybe there's something that can be worked out on that front?

Took Dylan Covey in Rule 5 draft.

As a senior at Pasadena’s Maranatha High School, Covey was widely regarded as an elite pitching prospect, whose control of both plus pitches – fastball and a power curve – as well as solid execution of his changeup, led him to be projected to go in the first round of the 2010 draft. The Milwaukee Brewers called his name with the 14th pick overall. One pick ahead of him, the White Sox chose some lefty from Florida Gulf Coast named Chris Sale.

That's an interesting idea, If they do trade off some of it, I just doubt its the Cubs. Who knows, I could be wrong (as usual). Hahn seems different. He might trade with the Cubs, but I don't believe he will just trade to help the Cubs. If it benefits both teams he might. I believe he knows that in order to win the fan battle in Chicago he better win any trades with the Cubs.

Interesting from the Trib:

The plan for a complete overhaul, which began with the trades of Chris Sale and Adam Eaton this week, means Renteria won’t quite know what his first Sox squad will look like until spring training. After the Sox selected right-handed pitcher Dylan Covey in the Rule 5 draft, general manager Rick Hahn said he was still “deeply engaged” with several teams about more moves, which very well could include closer David Robertson, third baseman Todd Frazier and left-hander Jose Quintana.

If they do trade off some of it, I just doubt its the Cubs.

The Sox would never trade a superstar like Sale to the Cubs (unless they for some reason lost their minds and wanted to massively overpay). But I wonder if they would consider prospect for prospect trades? We give them our top pitching prospect for their top hitting prospect. Probably would never happen but it was a thought. I know the Cubs will be flush with money when they get their new tv deal but if they were to sign FA pitchers it will be extremely costly on top of the huge, huge payout they'll have to give Kris Bryant a few years later.

We trade pitching prospect for some bats at some point. We cannot protect all these kids, so we either trade some eventually or in a couple years we have so many we lose them in Rule V draft. heh

Exactly, we want to be the worst team in the league for 2 or 3 years now. Otherwise why do this?

That's what it looks like to me too. Cant stockpile forever. Rules wont let them. OTOH, not all this talent is going to make it to the big leagues, there will be attrition, but you have to draft well and be able to judge talent. Sox haven't had a good track record on that.

Where the Sox are now is closer to the playoffs than they were four days ago thanks to the boldness of Hahn, the busiest man in Chicago sports this week and the boldest GM at the winter meetings. A weary but wired Hahn returned to his office Thursday to continue an awkward victory lap after hitting his stride as the Sox executive empowered finally to try a long-range approach.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/columnists/ct-rick-hahn-rebuilding-haugh-spt-1209-20161208-column.html#nt=oft03a-1la1

I don't buy that. And how many years will it take to even get to the playoffs, even if they do? If they sell off more vets it could resemble the Cubs 5 year plan. I believe that article is just too optimistic.

Nationals just lost out on Jensen, who is returning to the dodgers. So lets hope robertson has his bags packed and on the ready to move to the DC area.

Turner resigns with the Dodgers, so that removes one suitor for his services.
