  $50 million more total gross but spread out over a contract that is two years longer.  Net is considerable less when you consider the difference in state income taxes as currently IL is 4.95% and California is 13.5%.  Playing for the Padres means 81 home games and 10 road games in LA and 9 road games  in SF this year.  That's 100 games out of a total of 162 subject to the higher CA tax rate.  The White Sox play 7 total road games in CA (4 in Anaheim & 3 in Oakland).  100-7=93 more games per year at a 8.5% higher state income tax rate.  93/162 =  57.4%.   $300 million x 57.4% x 8.5% = $14.65 more in state taxes.  So basically $35 million more net but you become a free agent again at 36 years old instead of 34 years old. If he's still a productive in demand player at the end of the contract, a 34-year old should get a better deal than a 36-year old free agent.   That's also not taking into consideration that being a superstar pro athlete playing for a Chicago-based team is more in demand than the same player playing for a smaller market like San Diego.  Hell the '85 Bears players are still making $$ endorsement deals in Chicagoland.

  Maybe it's the weather but honestly you expect Manny to live in Florida in the off-season and summer in Chicago is just as good and maybe better than summer in San Diego.  Maybe he preferred the softer media and less pressure of San Diego versus the attention he'd receive in Chicago. He won't be scrutinized in SD like he would be in Chicago.  Chicago is a sports crazed town while SD is not.  Heck the Padres are the only major sports team there as they have no major pro football, basketball or hockey team.

I thought Sox Brass realized they had a golden opportunity to revitalize the franchise by getting both Harper and Machado, both of whom they easily could afford.  Such a move would make the White Sox relevant, increase interest (and thus sell more tickets), and maybe even increase the value of the team for a guy that will probably sell it in 5 years.

But after they whiffed badly on Machado and subsequently decided to bail on pursuing Harper, color me disappointed.

Jerry Reinsdorf has stated numerous times the White Sox won't be sold while he's alive.  Too much capital gains in a sale.  He's told his son to sell the Sox after Jerry dies and keep ownership of the Bulls.

I'd rather sign somebody next year that actually wants to play 3B...

I know that is the narrative, but there are "rumblings" that many of the minority owners want to cash in now before they get too old, and are strongly urging Jerry to sell.  Guess we shall see.

I concur with Blackie.  I am not nearly so annoyed that Machado chose to go elsewhere than I am that we folded up on Harper a long time ago.

Who knows the future though, I was upset when we didn’t land Arod but the Rangers couldn’t shed him fast enough.  Watch what happens!!

Machado was not a good fit - which is why I preferred Harper. He doesn’t hustle, he isn’t going to turn that on simply because he signed a big contract, it is likely going to get worse. How is that a good fit for a young team? If he didn’t want to come here why would you want him???  I am not going to whine that he wasn’t offered enough to satisfy his ego, as Andy pointed out the taxes alone made it a comparable deal.

Of course Arenado's numbers are better at Coors. Everybody's are.
Extrapolate his numbers in games outside of Coors and you still get a guy that's going to hit 30 HRs, drive in 100 runs and OPS about .800.

Arenado is not going to get Machado money, because GMs are well aware of the splits. he is also older than Machado.

Cheaper, less years, all-star numbers...I'm good with it.
