Boston holds off Tigers 1-0 behind Lackey, bullpen

By NOAH TRISTER (AP Baseball Writer) 6 minutes ago

DETROIT (AP) -- John Lackey edged Justin Verlander in the latest duel of these pitching-rich playoffs, and Boston's bullpen shut down Detroit's big boppers with the game on the line to lift the Red Sox over the Tigers 1-0 Tuesday for a 2-1 lead in the AL championship series.

Mike Napoli homered off Verlander in the seventh inning, and Detroit's best chance to rally fell short in the eighth when Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder struck out with runners at the corners.

Despite three straight gems by their starters, the Tigers suddenly trail in a best-of-seven series they seemed to have complete control of only two days ago. Game 4 is Wednesday night at Comerica Park, with Jake Peavy scheduled to start for the Red Sox against Doug Fister.

Lackey allowed four hits in 6 2-3 innings, striking out eight without a walk in a game that was delayed 17 minutes in the second inning because lights on the stadium towers went out.

It was the second 1-0 game in this matchup between the highest-scoring teams in the majors. That's been the theme throughout these playoffs, which have included four 1-0 scores and seven shutouts in the first 26 games.

After rallying from a five-run deficit to even the series in Game 2, Boston came away with a win in Detroit against one of the game's best pitchers. The Tigers had a chance for their own comeback in the eighth when Austin Jackson drew a one-out walk and Torii Hunter followed with a single.

But Cabrera, who failed to reach base for the first time in 32 postseason games for the Tigers, never looked comfortable against Junichi Tazawa, swinging and missing at the first two offerings and eventually chasing an outside pitch for strike three.

Fielder was even more overmatched against Koji Uehara, striking out on three pitches.

Uehara also pitched the ninth for a save, ensuring that Lackey's fine performance wouldn't go to waste.

Lackey pitched poorly his first two seasons in Boston after signing an $82.5 million, five-year contract in December 2009. Then he missed all of 2012 following elbow ligament-replacement surgery.

He's been better this season, and he kept the Tigers off balance Tuesday by effectively changing speeds.

Napoli's first at-bat in the majors was against Verlander on May 4, 2006, at Detroit's Comerica Park. He homered then, too.

This hit was far more important. In the last two games, the Tigers have started Verlander and 21-game winner Max Scherzer - and the Red Sox won both.

Throw in Anibal Sanchez's outstanding effort in the opener, when the Red Sox managed only a ninth-inning single in a 1-0 loss, and Detroit's three starters in the ALCS have combined to allow two runs and six hits with 35 strikeouts in 21 innings.

Matchup of top teams makes Fall Classic special
Storied franchises sporting baseball's best records give World Series a throwback feel

By Anthony Castrovince | 10/20/2013 1:51 A.M. ET

In opposition of the warped significance of regular-season standings wrought by the Wild Card era, this 2013 World Series matchup is a reminder of what once was.

The St. Louis Cardinals won 97 games this season, surviving a division battle that included two other postseason teams. They were, according to the raw records resulting from the 162-game grind, the best team in the National League.

The Boston Red Sox won 97 games, surviving a division battle that included one other postseason team and two additional clubs with winning records. They were, according to the raw math of 162, the best team in the American League.

Now, fresh off their mutual Game 6 satisfaction, they'll meet in a Fall Classic that is as much about the best teams in baseball as it is about the hottest.

This sort of thing never seems to happen anymore.

In fact, in the Wild Card era, dating back to 1995, there have been only been two times in which the teams with each league's best record met in October -- 1995 (Braves and Indians) and '99 (Yankees and Braves). In that sense, what we're about to witness, beginning Wednesday night at Fenway Park (8:07 p.m. ET first pitch, 7:30 air time on FOX), is something of a throwback, and the fact that it involves two storied franchises with such extensive October history makes it all the better.

But because unbalanced schedules will always lend themselves to varying interpretations of "best," perhaps we ought to just view this World Series for what it really is: a celebration of two of the most expertly operated organizations in baseball.

People will call this a "rematch" of the 2004 World Series, but that's barely true. David Ortiz is the last remaining link to Boston's band of "Idiots," and Yadier Molina, then just a rookie backstop backup to now-manager Mike Matheny, is the last remaining link to that NL pennant winner.

Even if you want to tie these teams to their organization's most recent World Series incarnation, it's a tenuous link, at best. Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia, Jacoby Ellsbury and Jon Lester are the only guys around now who were on the roster when the Red Sox won it all in '07. And though the Cards won it all just two Octobers ago, they have 19 different guys on this 25-man roster than the one that launched that incredible comeback against the Rangers, with Molina, David Freese, Matt Holliday, Daniel Descalso, Jon Jay and Lance Lynn the only holdovers.

So, what does that tell you? It tells you these clubs reload like few others do.

They had to reload recently. The Cardinals entered the season with rampant questions in a rotation that lost Chris Carpenter to injury (and with Kyle Lohse departed in free agency, the Cards were especially hopeful for a healthy return for Carpenter after his 2012 woes) and had Jaime Garcia pitching with a bum shoulder. Yes, the Redbirds still had a lineup so deep it would have fit just fine in the AL, but a common consensus was that the Reds looked a little bit more polished and prone for October (anybody who tells you they saw the Pirates coming is lying).

And the Red Sox? Too many questions to count. They faced the daunting prospect of going from worst to first, and their method of doing so was to make relatively short-term investments in aging talent (re-upping with Big Papi and bringing in Shane Victorino, Mike Napoli, Ryan Dempster, Jonny Gomes and David Ross ), all while hoping for a bountiful bounceback from the likes of Lester, Clay Buchholz and John Lackey.

John Hirschbeck is crew chief for World Series

2 hours ago AP - Sports

BOSTON (AP) -- John Hirschbeck will umpire his fourth World Series and will be crew chief for the matchup between the Boston Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals.

Hirschbeck will be behind the plate for Wednesday night's opener at Fenway Park, with Mark Wegner at first, Dana DeMuth at second, Paul Emmel at third, Bill Miller in left and Jim Joyce in right. Hirschbeck also worked the Series in 1995 and 2006 and was crew chief in 2010.

DeMuth will be working his fourth Series and Joyce his third but first since 2001. This will be the second Series for Miller and the first for Emmel and Wegner.

Umpires will continue to wear ''WB'' patches honoring umpire Wally Bell, who died Oct. 14. Bell umped the 2006 World Series and this year's All-Star game.

Just wondering, and maybe some of you in-the-knows out there can answer this:

Just about everybody who has some degree of baseball acumen thinks that Buck and McCarver are the biggest jokes as baseball announcers.  The amount of fawning, hyperbole, and overstating the obvious approaches Joe Morgan territory.  So why does the network continue to hand over the annual job to these two major ass-clowns?

I figure if it was my job to staff the position, I'd listen to what the people are saying and speculate I might attract more viewers if they didn't have to suffer through their endless prattle.

There's a good reason MLB and Fox like McCarver and Buck with their fawning, hyperbole, and overstating the obvious approaches Joe Morgan territory

Real baseball fans will tune in no matter who announces, and non baseball fans need that because they don't understand the obvious. So they increase the viewers.

Red Sox blast Game 3 loss as a 'joke,' but umpires made right call

By Tim Brown - 12 hours ago - Yahoo Sports

ST. LOUIS – When they'd lost on a technicality, in the pages of a rule book and in the literal act of trying to get back to their feet, the Boston Red Sox blamed the umpires, and there's no harm in that, no matter that the umpires were right and the Red Sox were not.

They'd left the field confused, but quite sure they'd been wronged, so those who were not confused were just blind mad, and as a result didn't even know which umpire to hang with the offending call, the call that rightfully ended Game 3 of the World Series.

What the Red Sox knew is they'd been obstructed from playing the 10th inning, a detail that sat on their souls like an anvil, which, by rule, would be obstruction if the anvil were attempting to go home from third base on a wild throw with two out in the ninth inning of the most important baseball game of the season so far.

Upstairs, on the top concourse at Busch Stadium, one wrung-out St. Louis Cardinals fan turned to another and said, "I don't know, this one feels kind of dirty, doesn't it?"

The other Cardinals fan stared at him like he'd grown another head, and it was Willie McGee's.

"No," he said.

The Red Sox are on their own with this, with the chaotic final play that ended with Allen Craig being thrown out at home plate but not. And Will Middlebrooks being face-down in the dirt and in the way. And two two-run leads overcome but meaningless. Craig fell over Middlebrooks, third-base umpire Jim Joyce pointed, Craig ran toward home and the right team won, even if it was in a very hollow way. World Series games are supposed to end with a ball in the gap, or a back-door slider on the black. Not with umpires reciting rulebooks.

The Red Sox were understandably mad after losing Game 3 of the World Series on an obstruction call in the bottom of the ninth inning. But that doesn't mean the umpires were wrong.

Just about everybody who has some degree of baseball acumen thinks that Buck and McCarver are the biggest jokes as baseball announcers

In the last inning of last night's game, they kept harping about how the Red Sox should not be holding the runner on with a two run lead and one out, "they should just give him second"  "that run doesn't count" blah blah blah.

The the Carmines picked him off to end the game and they didn't say a word.  I would have at least said "guess they knew something we didn't know"

World Series Game 6 is the most expensive baseball ticket in history

By Jeff Passan - 2 hours ago - Yahoo Sports

Tickets for Game 6 of the World Series already cost more than any baseball game in history, and the bad news for those without a pair is that they're only getting more expensive.

Data from local and national ticket brokers and analysts agree: Game 6 of the World Series between the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals, set for an 8:07 p.m. ET start at Fenway Park on Wednesday night, will be the most expensive ticket ever for a ballgame. From $900 standing-room-only stubs to a $10,000-plus seats close to the action, Red Sox fans are snapping up a dwindling inventory at record prices in hopes they'll witness something the city hasn't seen in nearly a century.

"The Red Sox have a chance to win a World Series in front of their home crowd for the first time since 1918," said Jim Holzman, president of Boston-based Ace Ticket. "Boston has the best baseball fans there are, and they want to be there to see this."

Lines snaked out the door at Ace's Kenmore Square location Tuesday, Holzman said, and the secondary market raged on broker sites across the web. By early afternoon, the average resale price for tickets sold stood at $1,024 per ticket, according to SeatGeek. Remaining ticket inventory on Internet sites was even heftier: an average of $2,186 apiece, according to TiqIQ.com, more than $300 apiece higher than a few hours earlier – although that number is likely juiced by those listing tickets for Godfather-offer prices.

The previous high for baseball since SeatGeek began tracking ticket-pricing data in 2009 is almost equivalent to the get-in cost for Game 6: $940 for Game 1 of the 2010 World Series in San Francisco. It also trumps Game 5 of the NBA Finals between the Celtics and Lakers in 2010 ($660) and will approach, with a strong possibility of passing, the Bruins' Stanley Cup Finals Game 6's in 2011 and '13 ($1,080 and $1,033, respectively), according to SeatGeek.

"This is essentially the Super Bowl in Boston," Holzman said.

I watched Game 6 last night, or most of it anyway.  It occurred to me that Boston has won the World Series three times in the last decade.  That's the kind of scenario that I'd hoped to see from the White Sox after 2005.  In the fall of '05, I thought we had a dynasty in the making.

But the Red Sox actually did it.  If anyone but the White Sox had to win in 2013, I'm glad it was Boston, because of the tragedy surrounding the Boston Marathon earlier this year.

Think about this: the Red Sox were in last place in 2012.  They turned it around to win it all in a year.  Not saying the decimated White Sox can do the same, but it's not out of the question.  I'd be happy with a third-place finish next year and the playoffs in '15.

I agree msf, but De Aza in a platoon situation minimizes his deficiencies on defense. The O's are using him that way. So many teams are doing the platooning, but the White Sox insist on regulars at each and every position. That's old school. We should platoon next year at 2B, 3B, LF, and possibly catcher.

The problem with keeping De Aza is his salary.  His 2014 salary is $4.25 million and if the Orioles don't non-tender him, expect that to increase by $1 million or more in 2015 as he is arbitration eligible.  That's way too much for a platoon outfielder.  De Aza for $2 million would be great.  De Aza for $5+ million, no thank you.

De Aza as anything other than a beer vendor....no thank you.

I have not lost notice that KC has emphasized a lineup that puts a premium on defense, has a rather mediocre offense, and is winning.
If I recall, our 2005 team was built on pitching and defense. Our offense, while better than KC, wasn't exactly the '27 Yankees.

If we're going to have a platoon at any position, both members of said platoon had better be able to cover ground and catch the ball.
Thus, Viciedo should find an exit.

Looking for somebody who can play LF and move over to CF after the inevitable Adam Eaton IR visit?

Try this guy. He'll probably be bought out:
