IMO the starters were burned out. The team relied way too much on starters to get ahead in the season, and they kept riding 'em hard during the second half.
Not sure if the 60-game season last year had anything to do with them fading in spite of inning management, but the fact that exactly one starter out of 4 made it INTO the 5th inning is no good.
Compound that with the inconsistencies (or negative consistencies) of the bullpen, and you've got a completely unpredictable (or negatively predictable) outcome every half inning.

Offensively, the team moved away from Menechino's "f*** the home run" approach and fell back into an overreliance on the long ball.

I was tired of resting players but thought maybe we peaked at the right time.

I have to say after watching the Dodgers and Giants last night we were never good enough to win the WS. We just don’t have the defense it takes. Period.

We don't have a multidimensional offense. Defense can only do so much on those nights when you're only scoring 2 runs.

Our big hitters are too one-dimensional, with the exceptions of Anderson, Robert (can use the whole field when he wants to), Moncada (can draw walks when he wants to), and Grandal (draws walks at will).

Everyone else I feel like is feast or double play.

big turning pt in game was the walk to Bregman in 3rd (after the Altuve steal) on a pitch I'm convinced was a strike. Rodon had his stuff. Strongly disagree with joey - the starters were given rest whenever they needed it, generously. La Russia didn't have his starters go deep often. He was nothing like Ozzie in 2005. Starters were regularly taken out after 5 innings, something Ozzie would never do - even if the starter was getting pounded. I don't know what team joey was watching this year.

Our bullpen stinks. Kopech gets **** slapped worse than Todd Ritchie. Bummer comes in to face a lefty and either walks him or gives up a hit. The pen just stunk.

4 stolen bases! Easy stolen bases, they could of run all day long.

Error, wild pitch, hit batter - complete clown world.

Sheets is the only guy with 2 hits and had the only extra base hits. Sox have to send him to outfield school this winter along with Vaughn.

I agree with Bill that the starting pitching had plenty of rest through the season. How many times did our bullpen have to go 3-4 innings because the starter had thrown his 100 pitches in 5 innings. Need to throw more strikes to keep the pitches from adding up. Would be nice on offense to take more pitches and maybe make the opposing pitcher run up his pitch count.

Well this postseason was a dud. Not one of our starting pitchers made it out of the 4th inning. That's almost unbelievable. Bullpen stunk overall the entire year. Not one extra base hit this series from our big guys: Anderson, Moncada, Robert, Abreu or Eloy. Just terrible. As much as I hate the cheating Astros, they are simply a far, far better team in every facet. They are going to their 5th straight ALCS. Maybe it's my pessimistic nature but I just have this uneasy feeling that we'll never be one of those teams that has a sustained, successful run like that. We might have one more easy year next year while most other ALC teams are rebuilding, better do something with it.

In the off season and spring training, the White Sox need to have a "boot camp" so to speak with their pitchers and catchers. The entire pitching staff doesn't know even the basics of a pick off move. None of them use a slide step. They never pitch out. Very few of them even try to throw to first seriously. I watched that game yesterday when Rodon was pitching and Altuve was on first. I told my son, look at Altuve, he's got way too much of a lead, Rodon should pick him off. Instead Rodon didn't even look at him and Altuve was on second base in a heartbeat. Think that would have happened with say Buerhle pitching?

Why not bring someone like Buerhle in to coach the left handed guys up, not only on the 40 man roster but also all of the guys in their minor league system? I am sure that Crochet never had a pitching coach teach him how to throw to first let alone second. Doubt that Bummer or Rodon got any real teaching either. Why is that? Easy. They never had because there was never any importance put on it because their stuff was so damned good it didn't matter. That to me is FOOL'S GOLD. IT does matter. It cost the White Sox a lot of unnecessary runs in the regular season and in these play-off games. Then do the same kind of thing with coaching the right handed pitchers in their system. Bring in someone like Maddox or Smoltz to work with the pitchers. Its all basic stuff. It just takes a lot of practice and work to do it.

Then that brings me to the crap defensive catchers that we have. Every catcher that caught for this team in 2021 sucked as a receiver.

They need to get a catcher or two in their system that knows how to stop pitches in the dirt and have an excellent time of transfer from his glove hand to his throwing hand. The White So did not have even one of those this year.

As for the so-called "calling of the game", look, if these catchers do not call a good game, then the pitching coach or the manager needs to do it a lot. Other teams do it. Why didn't the White Sox? Another easy answer. Because LaRussa has never done it in his life and doesn't know how. As for Katz, I wouldn't be surprised if he has done it ever also.
Depending on a catcher to call the game is easy for the manager to do because when the catcher **** it up, you can always blame the catcher. Tony has done that. But his other teams always have had terrific defensive catchers and he also had Dave Duncan at his side for his entire career. Grandal isn't up to the job as far as I am concerned.

I have the same feeling. Next year could be the last of the window of opportunity. The '22 Sox need to figure out how to step it up.

I think that Hahn is a very good GM. But as long as he has Reinny holding a choke chain around his neck, he can't work any miracles. I predict that he will leave the White Sox if LaRussa is re-hired. Probably not immediately but I am pretty sure he will be putting feelers out. Why wouldn't he, anyway. He has proven himself in building a young championship caliber team. Other owners will notice what he did and want him to do the same for them.

McGuire showed a nice arm when he threw out Meadows trying to steal.

yesterday was Banks' 30th birthday. He looked good. I always questioned the way the Sox "developed" him and their failure to promote him in the minors. I remember telling Min that "everyone deserves a chance to fail" when questioning why they didn't promote him.

I always though he would be a left handed Matt Zelesky type. A decent minor league organization soldier who would never see the Bigs and wind up a pitching coach somewhere - like Zalesky is at Charlotte.
