POLL: What is KW worst trade move as GM?
« on: April 21, 2011, 05:15:05 pm »

a five day poll

What is KW's worst trade move as GM of the White Sox?

Please limit your choice to a TRADE move, not a free agent signing (e.g. Linebrink), a waiver acquisition (e.g. Rios or Manny) or not allowing one of the CWS free agents to sign with another team (e.g. Putz or Frank Thomas [placed here for Shoeless]).

If you choose 'other' please enlighten the rest of us on what you think his worst trade has been as GM.

one vote per member but you have the option of changing your vote if someone's argument gives you a different view.

I had to say the Swisher trades. We lost Gio and Sweeney in the A's deal, then we give up Sweeney for nothing. He makes the All Star team. Pretty dumb if you ask me.

Think you meant swisher made the all star team.

I can totally see why the swisher trade was made... cant begrudge what we gave up to make the trade... why we got rid of him and for that little... god only knows...

But those two trades were not nearly as crushing as...

1) Todd Ritchie trade... holy f'n hell what did he go 1-15 after being billed as the legitimate ACE this team needed.
2) David wells... what a fat piece of absolute crap...
3) Berry/barry hard choice... not due to the players involved.. but the sheer idiocy and clumsiness of not being able to get the right f'n player back in a trade... it showed a certain lvl of sloppiness that can be xcused if caused by a  1st year intern, but inexcusable for the GM of a
MLB franchise. If he were my employee, i'd have fired him for that one.

generally speaking KW has a **** poor record trading away MLB players and getting anything of worth... hes done pretty well in the smaller deals though. Hindsight probably places the rowand trade pretty low as well... really took away from the core of the 05 team.

While both Swisher trades didn't pan out, the Teahen contract extension was a mistake and Daniel Hudson is turning out to be a very good pitcher, I voted the Peavy trade as the worse move.  Mostly for the money involved.

Jake Peavy's been a member of the White Sox organization for 1 year and 2 months of MLB service time.  Over that period, $18+ million has already been paid to Peavy for a 10-6 record, 127 IP and a ERA of 4.11.  Plus we're still on the hook for an additional $15M this season, $17M next year and a team option of $22M ($4M buyout) in 2013.  If Peavy never wins another MLB game, the White Sox would pay him a minimum of $54M for 10 wins.  Even if he returns, it's very doubtful that he'll ever return to the Cy Young winning level of his past.

Another reason is that Clayton Richard, one of the five players we trade for Jake, has done well pitching for San Diego.  Since the trade, Richard has gone 20-11 pitching over 285 innings with a 3.88 ERA while earning a total of less than $525,000  during his time with the Padres.  Richard isn't an ace or a #2 pitcher.  He probably tops out as a #3 pitcher at best but he'd sure look good on our team right now and would allow us to easily make the decision to let Buehrle leave via free agency after this season.  Richard also won't be eligible for free agency until after the 2014 season.

It would be nice right now to have another 200+IP per  season lefty starting pitcher on the 25-man roster and the $15M savings left in the budget to spend on fixing the bullpen holes on this club now and in the near future.

All good points, Andy.  I'm not liking the Peavy trade at all right now.  It doesn't look like Jake will have much longevity with the Sox or even in baseball.

Peavy trade costs the white sox nothing other then Richard... as his contract came with an exsisting insurance policy... we recoup 80% of his injury pay.

Richard also has great numbers due to playing at petco... so far his home park BAA is .224 on the road its a whopping .304.

Trading Swisher away.

We had no LH replacement bat and we got useless crap in return.
Had we kept Swisher, the trade for wold look pretty even. Gio is pretty good,
but Swisher would have produced for us.

All bad but Teabag was given an extension making him all but impossible to move.

I dont think he's unmovable... if he keeps hitting like he has in his limited time... he's easily movable...

He's also a great 1b/of replacement bat.... kinda like Kotsay...

Granted we are paying the a hole like hes the starting f'n 3bman

I can't believe the Teahen trade is ahead in the poll.

Yes, so far it hasn't been a good trade but the CWS gave up next to nothing (Getz & Fields) to acquire him.  Chris Getz = or is < than Lillibridge.  Josh Fields turned out to be less than Chris Snopek. The three year extension, while being the worst part of the deal, was only $14M over 3 years.  Pocket money compared to what they're paying Jake Peavy.

The Peavy contract (a minimum gurantee of $54M remaining) is want is going to hamper this team financially over the next few years.  There may be an insurance policy on his deal, but insurance only pays out if he never pitches again. Insurance contracts don't guarantee performance, they only guarantee an ability to pitch.  If, in his eventual return, he preforms like Buehrle has over the last 5 years (2 games over .500), insurance pays out nothing.  IMO, the financial cost of Peavy's contract makes it the worst move by far.

MLB insurance contracts pay out if players go on the DL as well.

They pay out for any injury past the 15 day dl...

This was a BIG problem for the a-rod deal... yanks and rangers were skewered because other gm's felt no insurance company would take on that risk...

I looked for the article... but couldnt find it.. KW specifically mentioned we got manny because of peavy getting hurt and that allowed us to take on manny's contract, with the insurance dollars...

the White Sox will NOT pay 54 million for peavy... maybe 1/3 of that if he pitches again next year... i'm going to simply assume he wont be back this year.... as its looking to be more and more likely.

Ritchie trade should be in the poll . . .

The Swisher trades seem bad, but I appreciate that this guy was a horrible fit for the clubhouse and Kenny moved him out of there.  He corrected the mistake of bringing him in (if not correcting for the loss of talent).

By popular request--

The Todd Ritchie trade has been added to the poll.

The Daniel Hudson for Edwin Jackson trade was removed to make place for the Ritchie trade since no one had voted for the Hudson/Jackson trade.

The poll is set up to allow you to change your vote up until the poll closes..

the poll closes on April 27, 2011, 11:17:07 pm (Chicago time)

I still maintain that acquiring Swisher was the right move.

Trading him away for jack $hit was the worst move....

Oh - besides Todd Ritchie.

In other fun Todd Ritchie facts...

Todd and his wife, Marian have six children named Karley (15), Kyndall (10), Kamdyn (8 ), Kallyn (6), Kannon (3) and Krayton (3).

I bet Kannon gets a lot of crap for not having a y in his/her (?) name.... maybe it should have been Kaynon... equally ambiguous and it keeps with their theme.

As bad as that trade was, it cannot be considered on a par with those others. I mean, it is not like Kip Wells haunted us. Hell, Todd should have named one of his kids Kyp.

Krayton is dangerously close to Kretyn.

Now that the voting is long over and the discussion has died down, this poll/topic will permanently move to "the Archives" board in 24 hours. (Thursday, May 5th, 1:00AM [Chicago Time])
