I think I like this format better than proboards.
-
I do too. Thanks for joining & posting.
-
Yeah, this seems to have a more accessible feel and look. Nice job setting this up, Andy.
-
Question: If we ultimately decide to make this the primary board, Andy, can you take the [backup] off the title? Or would you have to set up a new forum?
-
Shoeless isn't going to like all these topics......

As you can see, there was no problem removing [backup] from the forum name.
If a majority prefers, we can change the name to something else (like Chicago Sports Forum) and even add some additional separate categories on the main page. For example I added 'Chicago Bulls' category as a test. We can add a Bears or Blackhawks category if people want and still retain the http://sox.createaforum.com URL.
We can even split off a separate "World Today", "College Sports" or "TV & Cinema Revue" category if people want to keep the White Sox category purely about baseball.
-
I've posted an announcement on the proboards forum directing everyone over here, FWIW....
-

I'll leave that up to JhonJeter.

How much would it cost to make this board ad-free?
-
How much would it cost to make this board ad-free?
I don't know. I'll have to find that out.
However, I'm using Firefox 3.6.16 with Adblock Plus as an add-on and I see no ads here or at over 99% of the other website I go to.
-
I gotta say... this forum looks so much cleaner and modern than World Crossing. Seems fairly user-friendly too. Nice!
-
looks good!

I think I have found my mistake that was creating multiple threads of the same topic. Hopefully they won't reappear again.

seems like a nice board Andy. TYVM
-
I do like this format better than the older one, even though I has made it to rookie ball on the other board.
-
Yes Joey $15 @ month is a little high to just block ads at only this site.
Best bet is to use Firefox as a browser and then add-on Adblock Plus (both free) and you'll never see an ad again on 99+% of the websites you visit.
I did this a couple of years ago and I very rarely find a site that their ads are displayed to me.
mozilla Firefox: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/new/ (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/new/)
Adblock Plus: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/ (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/)
-
Nice - I just installed it for Chrome.

Nice - I just installed it for Chrome.
Great! Glad it works for you. Much better than paying a fee to block ads here.
Joey, I added you as a moderator here. Is that OK?
If anyone else wants/needs to ad Adblock Plus to their browser, the info can be found here:
http://RemoveAdblock.com/en/ (http://RemoveAdblock.com/en/)
-
Joey, I added you as a moderator here. Is that OK?
Fine by me.
Like before, I'll just be using my powers to move threads to archives and create new threads as necessary.
And to cater to Jeter's wishes, of course.
-

No catering for Jeter please. He is way too demanding.

We have a **** issue here. Profanity is being asterisked out. Even "p i s s e d off" got it. If I want civil language, I'll go to Over Auntie's Garage.
Is there a setting that can adjusted?

I didn't set any censor option. Let me poke around in the Admin area to see if there is anything I can tweak. Bear with me, this may take awhile since the Admin area isn't well organized.
-
Thanks! Yeah, I'm guessing the default is set to "wuss".
-
interesting, all my posts say I have made 5 posts. Looks like that is not working, not that it matters.
-
Triemstra will have nothing to do with this board if he can't cuss. . .for obvious reasons.
-
JJ
In the Admin area I found a box labeled 'allow users to turn off word censor' so I put a check in it.
I guess each user must have to turn off the censor themselves.
Click on 'profile' located in the middle of the top of this page.
after the page changes, look on the left under 'modify profile' and then click on 'look and layout'.
half way down the page there will be a 'leave words uncensored'box. check the box and then click on 'change profile' which is located at the lower right of the page.
This should, in theory, do it.
Now, I just did this for myself and I'm still getting words censored. However, I have found some changes I made here didn't appear immediately so I'm going to give it a few hours before I call it a failure and continue looking.
I got to go now. I won't be back online to sometime after 8pm tonight. Hope it works by then or I'll continue looking for a solution.
-
censor testing:
During one of Lenny Bruce's performances, he says he was arrested for saying the following 9 words and says them in alphabetical order: ass, balls, ****, ****, ****, ****, ****, ****, ****.[2] The latter 7 became George Carlin's "7 Dirty Words".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_dirty_words
------------
So bad news JhonJeter, looks like you can't post ANY of George Carlin's Seven Dirty Words.
I'll keep looking to see if there's a work around it but I expect I'll be as successful as the sox bullpen.
Until then, here's something for you JJ:

In an effort to make things easier.....
When you click on the HOME button located on the left near the top of this page, you will be redirected to the main page.
There I've added the following direct links for:
[1] links to a Bulls, Bears, Blackhawks, Cubs and Tigers forums.
[2] links to our two backup White Sox forums at proboards.
[3] link to the create-a-forum support forum
-
You're doing a nice job here, Andy. Thanks.

Yes - much, much appreciated, Andy.

Well, s h i t, that's too bad.

.....not that we all couldnt do without hearing them.
I second that. Is there any way to fix the censor option?
-
You can probably kiss off the TOGWF (Triemstra Official Gametime Weather Forecast, pronounced "togwf") if there's no profanity. Either that, or it will be an extremely bowdlerized version.
-
I'm going to have to award a 20 point bonus for the word "bowdlerize" -- well done.
-
I saw somewhere on the Support board that the cendored words are due to the sponsors of the ads not wanting that kind of language on boards that they place their ads on...
You can remove the filter by buying ad-free blocks, but they are based on page views, and would be expensive in the long run.
Which sucks.
-
It's no big deal I don't think. The workaround is pretty f u c k ing easy.

WC had a feature that allowed you to mark certain threads as read, See like I dont read certain threads because they dont interest me and I dont want to have to visit them just so that there is no new posts to read. This forum doesnt have a "Mark as read" thing to click on
-
Now that WC is officially dead...
I'd like to thank Andy for setting this this board up... you've definitely put in a lot of work and its appreciated.
Good to keep this group together... i am amazed we've been together since 1998... i did lose some of you for a few months when we moved to WC... but shoot I've posted on a community with most of you for almost half my life... that's a scary thought.

Any interest in changing the look of this board from the CAF default blue?
Here are the choices:
--------------
Curvy Caramel
(http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s20/smfstyles/curvycaramel/screenshot.jpg)
--------------
Orangina
(http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s20/smfstyles/orangina/screenshot.jpg)
--------------
Dark Modern
(http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s20/smfstyles/dm/screenshot.jpg)
--------------
Should we try one of the three options or keep the default? What do you think.
-
I like the contrast in dark modern.
-
Ditto.
-
Me too. Sox colors.
-
Get rid of that crap. Sorry if you like it but I dont. While I like the Sox uniform colors being that, I dont like my board being that color. Please change it back to the way it was
-
very cool. Way better than Cubbie blue.
-
I like the Sox colors. The dark background is better for your eyes.
-
I like the Sox colors. The dark background is better for your eyes.
Then why does it seem harder to read this forum? The light blue was much easier on my eyes. :(
-
Is there not a way for each individual to customize their background? So those who like this can keep it while others can switch to a different color?
-

Maybe just because of the low contrast between the gray-ish text and the darker gray background.
My point was just that if you're going to stare at a backlit computer screen, it's better for your eyes if it's a darker image....[/HR cubicle safety schpeel]
-
I'd be more concerned for your eyes watching TV. Particularly sports. Particularly baseball. Partic-. . . .ahh, you know where this is going.
Wacky!
-
I like the black/grey background, but if it must be changed again, I'd vote for the caramel. The blue is too Cubbish.
-
The Sox went through about 20 different uniforms before settling on the black and silver. They spent two entire decades (70s-80s) in really, really bad attire.
Let's try to learn from history and leave this puppy as is. It looks fine.
-
Is there not a way for each individual to customize their background? So those who like this can keep it while others can switch to a different color?
There isn't an option on create-a-forum for users to pick their own 'style' setting.
If you wish, you can go into their Support Forum ->Suggestions and ask them to offer this option.
http://support.createaforum.com/ (http://support.createaforum.com/)
However, If you're using a FireFox browser there is a quick way for you to customize the background color +/or the text color and the 'zoom' level.
It's called the NoSquint add-on and it works great.
I just tried it and I was able to change the background to white, the text to black, and adjust the 'zoom' level for the text which could be easier on your eyes. You can even change the text color of the 'links' too.
JhonJeter could even change to colors scheme to match his Seattle Mariners or Chicago Cubs jammies using this add-on. ;D

I've got the No Squint add-on enabled now. I went with a simple light gray background, black text, red links, purple visited links. Had to disable the ugly orange background though.
Yeah, you can't please everyone.

How do you do html stuff like colors, etc. beyond what's available in the dropdown?
How do you embed links in normal text?
Need to re-develop the full arsenal of Tools of Annoyance

There are buttons right above the smiley faces... one of them inserts links etc... looks like a planet symbol with a page in front.

Yeah!
And how does one exactly embed a video? I know how much all of you loved my WT clips at the old place...

Pretty sure I know how to post a link, Method. I've gotten support like that when calling Chennai in the past. Question was how do you EMBED a link "under" normal text? And same question with the different colors, the equivalent of <font color=""></font> here.

No it can't be centered. I tried.
The 'choke' photo is the slump-buster for this team.
It's been removed for now since they won but it will return each & every time this team loses two or more games in a row. :)

I'd make it three or more games in a row. Two losses in a row is pretty commonplace for most teams.

an Archives board has been created where old polls and full topics and posts will be placed when their time has come.
You can access The Archives through either the Home page of by using the Jump to drop down rectangle located on the lower right of each page.
-
I think we should stream line...
Lets dump cinema revue and merge it with the BP bar.
Merge Sox history with Sox management. both are low post treads.
Merge Welcome to the white sox sticky with quick reference links...
Just a couple of ideas.
-
In this era of austerity...
Both the Welcome to ... and Non-Political News topics have been sent to The Archives.
The 2011 White Sox and Sox Management topics have been merged.
Thru the effective lobbying of the AMPAS and ATAS, the TV & Cinema Review & Revue topic has survived this round of cuts.
-
I think Sox History should stand on its own. It doesn't really belong with Sox Management, which does in fact fit nicely with 2011 White Sox.
Cinema Revue could go into BP Bar. Or not.

I'm saddened by the fact that Pravda is gone... he was mildly entertaining... esp after getting to see his still current 2008 myspace page. yes he was about the only one still on myspace in 08.

I'll compromise with you.
the Ozzie choke photo goes up in the left hand corner whenever the CWS have a three or more game losing streak while their overall record is .500 or above.
A sub-.500 team record gets the 'choke photo' after a two or more game losing streak.
With the loss Saturday afternoon, the Ozzie choke photo has made its return.

With Loveland's approval, we're going to try this new style. All the objectionable orange has been replaced with the black & silver, however it retains the light background for posts.
Hopefully, this is an acceptable compromise for everyone here.
If not, anyone with the computer skills to design one that resembles the old worldcrossing style, please send me the CSS codes for your new design and I'll try it out on testing board.
-
Like the black and silver.
Now, can we do something to make this site more mobile friendly?
-
Thats going to be close to impossible...
A lot of the "features" are not removable... they are build in and there to stay.
-
Like the black and silver.

Allegedly this is a more mobile friendly link to this board:
http://sox.createaforum.com/general-discussion/?wap2 (http://sox.createaforum.com/general-discussion/?wap2)
southside05, Method or someone else who relies mainly on a mobile connection to this forum, please try it and give everyone a report.
-
Hmm. Not bad. Very Spartan, which I like for this sort of thing. However, no way, that I can see, to "quote" another's post but this will do for now. Thanks!
-
I do see quotes... but only one lvl deep... if its a quote in a quote it doesnt show up...
Although it only shows 5 posts per page and no post numbers...
Some of you might like the mobile version better for general usage...
-
No, I meant that one can't click on a button or link to quote another poster's post in response to it.
-
In the regular view of this site (not the mobile friendly link), there is a 'print' button located at the lower right near the bottom of the page on each and every topic page.
If you click on it, you'll get a simple black & white page of all the posts for that topic. You'd have to go back to the regular view to make a post, but the actual reading of the posts could be easier for both the vision impaired and mobile users.

Not sure if tapatalk is compatible with this forum at this time... last I'd seen it was vBulletin, phpBB compatible... and simple machines and ip.board were under development... but thats a solid 6mths ago.

According to their website, TapaTalk now works on SimpleMachines which creataforum is based upon. However, CAF uses a heavily modified version of SM so we're not sure if it's going to work.

Love the color scheme of this board.

just wondering....is it possible to change the color of the Topics on the main page?

I like this format because I am used to Simple Machines format for my Bulls board.

I like it too. But on the main page, the subjective titles are hard to read. not sure why Started by is in black.

Good point Shoe. Plus the Post button was real hard for me to see, even with my reading glasses I can barely read the work Post inside the black box.
-
I believe the reason for this is that there is only one code that sets all the fields text color.
In order to have the dark background else where, the text color needs to be light enough to be seen... yet dark enough to show up against the lighter backgrounds.
Doesnt allow for much wiggle room unless we change the txt color to something really bright, like Red/Teal/Light Blue. Any of which would look gaudy.
-
well, let me write you a defect and you get right on fixing that ok? LOL, that is what I would tell my underlings here at work, hah

Method is correct. In the coding for createaforum, one single CCS color code controls numerous places in the board. Some of these places have dark backgrounds and some are using the vegas gold or beige background. That's one of the reasons why I used very little 'white' as the text color in the darker backgrounds as the color code would then make certain areas with the light backgrounds very difficult to read with white text.
For example: If I change the color code to 'black' to darken the text in the subtitles on the home page, you'll won't be able to read the text in the top left section of the home page. If I change it to a lighter color to make text in the darker backgrounds more visible, some areas that use the lighter background will be more difficult to read.
So it is very difficult fine tuning this compromise of using both dark & light backgrounds here, as there's a fine line in finding colors that are easily visible in all the different shades of backgrounds.
I could change it to 'red' which would be more easily visible in both the dark and light backgrounds but I'd expect I'd be soon reading plenty of complaints that 'there's too much red text here.'

Update: I changed the color code to a slightly darker grey in order to make the 'subtitle' area of the home page easier to read on the light backgrounds. It will also make it a tad less visible on the darker backgrounds. (I can always change it back)
Also to show you what substituting 'red' as the CCS color would do to the look and to further demonstrate how changing only one color code affects other parts of the site, look here at a sample board I set up to work on possible changes. You'll be surprised how much is affected by changing just one text code color:

well, let me write you a defect and you get right on fixing that ok? LOL, that is what I would tell my underlings here at work, hah
I know this createaforums setup uses Smart Machines forums... We could fix it... by starting up our own SMF box with the forum on it... We could get Tapatalk working with it in a hurry... doing it in conjunction with the other Chicago sports forums would make the process easier by getting more peeps involved in setting the deal up.
But this is only if you write up a defect... :)

Now, can we do something to make this site more mobile friendly?
Allegedly this is a more mobile friendly link to this board:

southside05, Method or someone else who relies mainly on a mobile connection to this forum, please try it and give everyone a report.

I am talking about the baby smoking cigarettes above. That replaced the Titanic. FT isnt the Titanic

I for one am a big fan of the Smoking Baby. I am such a fan that I actually own one:

Let's all make the smoking baby our avatar.

AndyMacFAIL, how do you make an avatar animated, like yours? Maybe I don't know how to do the correct "Save As" to my machine first?

Love the tag line at the bottom of the package: "REAL babies should never smoke!"
That should be included in with the Surgeon General's warning on each pack of cigarettes.
-
Pregnant mothers either as well as pregnant fathers. Dont want to be sexist here.
-
PS, where can I get one of those?
-
They are carried by "Accoutrements" so you might have luck at any store (like an Uncle Fun here in Chicago) that carries Accoutrements stuff, or go to the source, Accoutrements = Archie McPhee's, the bestest store ever in the history of mankind.
EDIT- McPhee's no longer has. I will just bet you this is due to the humorless handwringers who found this "offensive" in the light of those vids of ACTUAL smoking 3-yr-olds or whatever.
-
Dont live in or around Chicago so how does one find that? On line somewhere?
-
McPhee's is out of Seattle, but online also, they appear to have discontinued. You are probably best googling it at this point.

Philip Morris goes after smoking baby toy
Posted Apr 12th 2006 12:21PM by Adam Finley
Filed under: Funny, Controversies
Philip Morris is going after the creators of a Smoking Baby toy, though the company's reasons aren't based so much on the fact that the toy might encourage smoking in young children, but because the cigarettes resemble the Marlboro brand. I guess the lesson is that your baby can smoke, as long as the cigarettes are generic. In a letter dated April 7, Marlboro informed Toy Lounge that the tiny cigarette pack which came with the toy bears a striking resemblance to the design of the Marlboro pack (and it does). The letter also states the toy creates a bad image for Philip Morris. All I know is that I don't smoke, but I really want one of those smoking babies. Also, one that chews tobacco and solicits prostitutes would be pretty cool, too.
-
Found the product at Toxic Toys.com for 8.99 but they were out of stock. I wonder why? And the ceramic baby actually does smoke the incense cigarettes.
-
If the smoking babies are out of stock, you'd think they would at least have the smoking puppies or smoking kittens.
-
No shortage of smoking monkeys here. (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rlz=1G1GGLQ_ENUS321&q=smoking+monkey+toy&aq=f&aqi=g1g-v5&aql=f&oq=)

I would like the smoking Bin Laden doll.

Ok, BlackSox, I've changed mine. I do like the idea, seeing a big row of these on every page.

Question for Andy: what are the post thresholds set at (number of posts) for Rookie Leaguer, Single-A, Double-A, Triple-A. and Major Leaguer? Just curious... are those arbitrary? Set by us or by CAF?

It is based on content. How else could Jeter be at Double-A already?

It is based on stupidshytte, off-topic content that hardly anyone understands or cares to understand, and if they do understand, don't like. How else could Jeter be at Double-A already?
Pre-emptive strike'd.

Question for Andy: what are the post thresholds set at (number of posts) for Rookie Leaguer, Single-A, Double-A, Triple-A. and Major Leaguer? Just curious... are those arbitrary? Set by us or by CAF?
This is what I set them at:
Spectator: 0 posts
Rookie Leaguer: 1-49
Single-A: 50-86
Double-A: 87-163
Triple-A: 164-209
Major Leaguer: 210-499
All-Star: 500-?
-
Can you change the names of them also? I bet the resident morans here have a whole new set of ideas given the way this season has gone so far.

I don't know, I think it should probably take 10 or 15 posts just to get to Rookie.
And I would make it 1000 posts to get to All-Star... but that's just me.
-
Actually, the MORE posts you have, the bigger a looser you should be. I call for a total revamp of the rating system.
-
5000 posts = "posts at WSI"
-
...or just go with "Mom's Basement Dweller".
-
5000 posts = "posts at WSI"
HA- actually we could have corresponding pics for each level too; I have a collection of basement dwellers, pizza roll eaters, and auntie's wireless connection borrowers, each one more shocking than the next.
-
I like the makeup job on the avatar above in the upper left corner. Well done. Gracias!
-
Where is the vote for who gets fired first poll? ;D

Kudos on the updated team picture/slogan.

If you slide the weather Thingy to the right a ili I can see rochester's weather

Looking at the above suggestions, I've adjusted the numbers for the 'levels':
Spectator: 0 posts
Rookie Leaguer: 1-49
Single-A: 50-99
Double-A: 100-249
Triple-A: 250-499
Major Leaguer: 500-999
All-Star: 1000-??

Has anyone here tried or is regularly using the "Arcade' feature?
If not, should I turn it off?

Thats the first time I heard we even had such a feature

Nope. Kill it.

Yeah really, loved those games, Galaga especially

Andy, like the current banner picture. Check out all the wanna-be Bartman Doosh-bags.

In the last few days, create-a-forum seems to be having sporadic access problems similar to the ones that periodically affected World Crossing. So I recommend everyone make sure you have our back up forums bookmarked in case the outages continue or get worse.

Thanks for the heads up, it does seem rather slow and I have been unable to get into it a couple times.

if you are wondering why the 'style' here has changed . . .
from the CAF support forums:

________________________________________________________________________
We are doing a system wide update the createaforum system near the end of May/early June of 2011.
This new update will bring many new features and improvements to the Create a Forum system.
There maybe some issues with custom styles as result of this upgrade but we will try to make the transition as smooth as possible.
CreateAForum.com Team
This is why our custom 'black, grey & beige style' has been replaced by the default mode. Hopefully this is a temporary situation.

Thanks for the updates Andy, and thanks again for all of the hard work you put into making this place awesome.
-
I have a question about the picture above. Is that supposed to be somebody burying this team?
-
Love the Ozzie pic on top of the page. He looks as disgusted as I am.
-
Love the Ozzie pic on top of the page. He looks as disgusted as I am.
Why should he be disgusted? He and Kenny put the team together.
-
Would you not agree that some players are not playing up to their potential?
-
Yes but whos job is it to get the best out of them?
-
Yes but whos job is it to get the best out of them?
Right, just hold a gun to their heads.
It's up to the player to produce.
Some "talent" just isn't there, other "talent" isn't being put into play.
-

But if they are underperforming its the managers job to manage the team to get the most out of them. If its a talent problem then its the GM's baby

Rios pickup was bad bad bad idea.

Most of the blame for this stinky team can be laid at the feet of Kenny, not Ozzie.
-
Seeing Ronald McDonald on the banner today makes me want to kill.
-
Isnt this the last year of Ozzie's contract?
-
Isnt this the last year of Ozzie's contract?
No.
Ozzie Guillen Manager
3 years (2009-11), plus 2012 option
signed extension with White Sox 9/11/07
option becomes guaranteed with division title in 2011
White Sox exercised 2012 option 1/21/11
2 years (2007-08), plus 2009 club option
signed extension with White Sox 5/05
White Sox also picked up 2006 option 5/05
07:$1.1M
2 years (2004-05), plus 2006 club option
hired 11/03, replacing Jerry Manuel
-
OK so they picked up the 2012 option.
-
He sure isnt winning a division title this year
-
As for the banner picture of Ronald McDonald it seems kinda aperpo beings the clown=like atmosphere of the team. Better would be Bozo but the idea is right on.
Was talking to a friend and fellow White Sox fan yesterday. He was saying this team is unwatchable its so agravating.
-
No issues with Ozzie sticking around... Can Walker. Can KW. Rebuild for 3-4 years.
Maybe try and lure Dayton Moore away from KC... but we all know JR only promotes from within.
-
The new title with the Ronald McDonald makes me think we're going to get the fat Viciedo, or rather, McDonald's is going to get him and he's going to chow down. Ronald's apparently looking forward to it.
-
Once again, the MLB Extra Innings package is offering a free midseason preview from Thursday, July 14 through Wednesday, July 20.
Among the cable MSOs offering MLB Extra Innings this year from iN DEMAND are: Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications, Bright House Networks, Cablevision Systems, Bresnan Communications, Charter Communications, Midcontinent, RCN, and many independent affiliates serving fans across the nation.
I'm not sure about Dish Network or DirecTV are offering this free preview. Someone here using one of the satellite services can answer this questin.
Check here to see if your provider offers the free preview: http://www.indemand.com/sports/mlb/ (http://www.indemand.com/sports/mlb/)
For further info see: http://www.indemand.com/press/view/84 (http://www.indemand.com/press/view/84)
-
DirecTV has been advertising it. I do not believe Dish network carries the MLB Extra Innings package.
-
I wouldnt watch MLB anyways as I get all the Sox feeds, CSN, WGN, WCIU, and Fox.
-
Thanks for the heads up andy.
-
I like the updated banner / title, Andy.
...or did Viciedo hack your account and change the board?
-
Andy,
I have grown weary of the clown, even though it is fitting. Can we change the picture?
Off the cuff, I suggest this:
-
Yes, please. I'm growing weary of explaining it to others who see it.
Though with this team of zombies, there may not be much of a reason to hang around here for the next six months, so maybe it's not an issue for me after all.
-
What? Change clown central? Only thing more appropriate would be Bozo.
-

there's always to read the witty posts from your Jeters and your BlackSoxes...

Well that should just about send him on his way for good.
-
Should we change our watch up above?
http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/whitesox/chi-stewart-to-make-soxs-debut-saturday-night-at-minnesota-20110805,0,4971166.story
-
Ronald McDonald's photo is back at the top of the page.
It will stay there as long as this team continues to play like a bunch of clowns.
-
Well Ronald McDonald is a step down from Bozo, but at least a step in the right direction.
-
Hendry was one of the worst GMs, surprised they kept him this long too. He was an ok scout in the past, but he let that old job prevent him from trading kids until recently. Patterson, Pie, the list goes on and on.
-
Ronald McDonald is a step down from Bozo
Sez who?
-
Short of Emmet kelly, Bozo is the premiere clown. In Chicago Bozo was more popular.
-
I'm partial to Wizzo.
-
Heh, aren't we all?
-
Ha, yeah, I was just waiting for someone to suggest throwing a Wizzo image up there if for noother reason than to annoy the shyste out of a JhonJeter.
-
Bozo didn't bring the Shamrock shake to the world and doesn't provide a worthwhile social contribution such as keeping the streets safe from the Hamburgler.
I'll concede that he's got Bucket #6 in his asset columm, but that is exponentially cancelled out by Wizzo.
-
Hey none of that RM stuff impress me.
-
BTW, thanks again for putting together a great forum, Andy. You're handling the admin responsibilities far better than any of us others would have been capable of doing.
-
Ditto!
I will make it a point to be congizant of the rules with my posts as well.
-
Phooey! I just wont quote a thing. Nobo0dy clicks on links anyways. I know I rarely do. Too much bother. Waste of time.
-
I generally quote 2-3 paragraphs, and when not posting from my cell include a link where excerpt came from.
You can also cut and paste the parts you think are pertinent, comment after them, provide a link... and that should get your point across w/o getting you in trouble.
You gotta provide a link... A lot of those newspapers/sites rely on page views to drive their advertising revenue... so posting and having someone click helps your cause in some random manner...
Dont be defeatist about it.. :P
-
Again, like I said, nobody clicks on the links anyways.
-
Shoeless only clicks on the ones that have huff-po in the address.
-
Again, like I said, nobody clicks on the links anyways.
I always click on the link if it interests me. Then again, I like to read.
Maybe you're just lazy, and prefer video, like most Americans these days.

Yes, WshflThinking, we know you're resistant to change. Plus video doesn't work too well on your Pentium I computer with AOL dial-up service. But you still got your Internet Explorer browser working for you.
Surprising that a law & order tea party guy like you didn't see anything wrong in constantly violating the law by C&P full articles from other sites here. Most of the time without attribution too. Or don't those laws and courtesies apply to you too?

Hmmm! Well Mr. Smarty pants, as usual you dont know what you are talking about. Video works just fine here. I just dont find the need to watch them. And for your edification this is a custom built computer and cable internet, of course you wouldnt believe that either. As for AOL, I used to have that back in 99. I found it terrible and full of hackers. But....personally I dont give a damn what you think of me. So go stick it where the sun dont shine. Oh, and keep your personal attacks to yourself.

Never Mind.

If the Sox win 6 in a row, can we please retire the Ronald McDonald image? For one thing, clowns scare me, and secondly, you're giving McDonald's free advertising.
-
I'm pretty sure Andy works for McDonald's, Fury. The WSJ recently announced that he's been promoted to Fry Czar -- expect some cutting edge innovations in potato consumption.
-
<snicker>
-
McDonald's
I tried that "Daily Double" sandwich of theirs. Surprisingly good; actual pieces of lettuce (not shredded), fresh tomato, two of their basic lithul patties (the only kind of patty to get from McDonald's IMO), and mayo. Made for a tasty drivein-style burger.

Good ol' BPI burgers. GRAS.
-
Yeah, I think that's what makes a very occasional McDonald's burger taste so good. The ammonia. I'll take my chances, "my body is a sacred temple but whiskey is not a problem" guy.
What does "GRAS" mean?
-
It's textspeak for "Go Roger A Schnauzer" -- akin to telling someone to take their opinions elsewhere, very similar to "go jump in a lake".
-

It's the FDA's designation for BPI beef: "Generally Recognized As Safe."
Confidence-inspiring, huh?
-
Generally.

With the 2011 MLB regular season now ended, three topics have been closed and locked. They have been replaced with two new ones: The Off-season 2011-12 / Hot Stove League and MLB Playoffs - 2011.
New 2012 versions of the three closed & locked topics will return either when Spring Training opens in February 2012 or on Opening Day in April 2012.

Mine works with both Google Chrome and Firefox browsers so there's nothing wrong with the website. Which browser are you using? Try clearing your cache and see if that works.

I have the latest Firefox and the latest Flashplayer and it doesn't work for me. Hasn't worked since Tuesday. Home or work. Work is IE 8.

What stadium is LaRussa standing in in that pic? He has a home jersey on so I'm confused.
-
It's the ol' "Big A" in Anaheim. They still use that same number font on the outfield wall today.
I know, I'm a freak.
Not sure why he's got the home white on, though. The only AS game held in the 80s there was in 1989.
-
Looking more at the pic, I think he is wearing the gray road jersey. The 'SOX' lettering appears brighter than the rest of the jersey. The exposure setting on the camera may have been off. Plus, he's got the awesome road hat on.
Glad we settled that. You can all resume your daily activities.
-
Nice work. It's an odd pic to be sure.
-
I approve of the youn handsome version of La Russa . If he comes back I presume we are going to be saddled with the old bedraggled version........

Finley should have been heavily fined by the Commissioner of Baseball for changing the Kansas City A's colors from blue and white to green and yellow. Green, then and now, is not an acceptable baseball uniform color. Everyone has always known that.

Just for you, Fury...

Maybe Andy can put up this pic of his daughter, Bianca, instead:

Hmmm, if La Russa's daughter is a Raiderette, that means she's easy.
-
Hey, what happened to the "new" buttons? Are mine the only ones missing?
It appears CAF is going the way of WXing...
-
I still have the "new" buttons....
-
You've just a created hostile environment in here with that comment, Love...
Where's my lawyer??
-
I still have mine too.
-
I just want to point out that BlackSox is stuck on post #420. Coincidence? I think not.
-
If only i was smart enough to have planned that.
Oops -- 421
-
We're less than 12 months away from the next national election, so to prevent this site from becoming a 'pi$$ing contest' and more of a political board than a baseball board, effective immediately, all political stuff needs to visible only in the 'World Today' topic.
This means no political avatars or signatures will be allowed as they are visible in all the threads that you post.
Thanks.
-
LOL. Let's see how fast this spirals into WSI...
-
Seriously, Andy? I mean, no one's mind is going to be changed by such avatars or signatures. I think most people just ignore that stuff.
Take ISF's signature, for instance.
All I had to do is Google "Santorum" and I found out where the Senator stands on all the issues. ;)
Certainly not my cup of tea, but to each his own.
-
Done.
-
Personally, I'm OK with Andy's rules. All he's asking for is that politics stay in the political thread. That and compliance with copyright laws (2 paragraph excerpts, max, + link) are the only two things he's been a stickler for.
-
Really??? Why put a hornet’s nest where there was none? I think almost all the people that post on this thread are able to separate cyber friendships from their political differences. I enjoy bantering with Method and Fury almost as much as I like teasing Shoeless. Besides, it’s very rare to meet someone like Fury with whom you can talk about Church History. You have no clue how many people I have driven away with that talk over the years, but not Fury!
Some things can be better left unsaid. Just my opinion - thankfully I'll comply as I have never had an avatar or a siggy line. Nor will I.
--Nonconformist Loveland
-
Thanks Andy for the demolition photo above. I dont believe I ever saw that. I loved that old stadium
-
All I had to do is Google "Santorum" and I found out where the Senator stands on all the issues
The first part of that sounded so promising....
-
Thanks Andy for the demolition photo above.
"Years from now, you'll park here"
-
I see that in the true spirit of WSI nazi moderatorism, some people now are allowed avatars and signatures, while others are not.
I am not surprised that has happened, just that we're heading to that level so quickly.
I am considering creating a new site and allowing multiple people admin rights like we did at WX to head this type of cr*p off at the pass.
If you are interested in moving, let me know.
-
someone found that hornets nest Loveland mentioned.
-
lordy... might have been in there somewhere... but who complained?
My sig was taken off... its not political... nor did i receive any PM's to remove it.
Asinine policy all around. We fought pretty hard to avoid any type of censorship at WX... it was requested that politics be kept to one thread and everyone complied... a sig or avatar was not seen as shoving it into every thread... nor should it be seen as such...
-
In defense of the Newt Love photo, it has a humorus componant. heh
fwiw, I am a co-admin of a very tiny woman's ministry message board, we have been around since 2005 and I often pointed out over the years to these "Christian" ladies who get upset over the most minor things that folks on my Sox board who are almost all male are way more mature than they are when it comes to conflict. Anyhow, that's a silly side point, but we have chosen to have two admins there, and we did it specifically so that one person wouldn't be making blanket or policy decisions without having someone else's council. It's not a majority rule thing, but it also isn't a monarchy.
-
If someone here doesn't want to view the avatars/signatures of certain members for whatever reason, shouldn't the onus be on that person to update their "Look and Layout" setting to hide those things?
Just axin'...
-
i It's not a majority rule thing, but it also isn't a monarchy.
right on!
-
This is awesome.
-
The only real solution to this... is to split the board into three parts.
Sox.createaforum.com
Rightysox.createaforum.com
leftysox.createaforum.com
-
Or, if you don't want to see other people's avatars or signatures, HIDE THEM!
-
Careful with that political avatar boat...
-
hahahahha, yeah, I was wondering how that slipped through. . .but it does suggest a fun and unique challenge, that is, seeing how you can get around the avatar policy and sneak something past that is a veiled political statement. Obscure references, double entendres, and dare I suggest, REBUSES??
-
I am a co-admin of a very tiny woman's ministry message board,
Just how tiny do these women need to be in order to qualify? Like the size of the Geico gecko? Smurfette?
-
Rebuses, heh.
That word reminds me of a guy who was part of our late 80s "sh*tty outfield" along with Kenny and Calderon.
-
The reason the signature didn't show on the other forums is because for some reason it doesn't carry over. I assumed once it was there it was there for whatever forum I was on.
When I went to check signature/avatar settings yesterday, those options no longer existed.
It also appears Method lost his as well, so saying those options weren't taken away is false.
FAIL
-
My avatar is political. I'm part of the Occupy Kenny Williams' House movement.
-
Just how tiny do these women need to be in order to qualify?
hhahah- they're not kneeling in prayer, they're standing upright!
-
Little, big, kneeling, praying, I don't care.
It's the cyber hugs, sparkley flower greetings, the cartoon angel avatars, and the annimated Happy Birthday's with tweeting birds and smiling squirels that send me running. I don't get it.
-
It seems like the "MLB Playoffs / World Series - 2011" topic has run its course.
I'm thinking about locking the "MLB Playoffs / World Series 2011" topic because the post-season is long over and it's been over a month since the last post.
It would still be available to read but posting would be closed on the topic.
Any objections to making this move?
-
Not from me.
-
Send it to the Smithsonian...

Is it too early for a "2011 White Sox" thread?
Or at least a "Spring Training" thread?

Not at all!(Sorry, beneath my lofty standards, but couldn't resist.)
-
Sorry - meant 2012.

We'll have to endure the 2012 White Sox all season long, because the Mayan calendar doesn't run out 'til next December.
-
the Mayan calendar doesn't run out 'til next December
Take it to The World Today, fella.
-
This probably means my plans for my new Mayan avatar and siggy are out the window.......

You can go for a Boat drink like avatar... where everyone knows it political but at face value it isnt...
-
I even got my 5 gold stars taken away from me... this place sucks.

everyone knows it political but at face value
Whatchu talkin' about? I'm a HUGE newt safety advocate...

Joey, this is/was my plan when I closed the old 2011 topics at the end of the regular season:
Chicago White Sox / The Off-season 2011-12 / Hot Stove League
« on: September 30, 2011, 02:21:24 am »
Now with the regular season officially over, this new topic replaces both Today's Game 2011 and 2011 White Sox /Sox Manglement.
A White Sox Spring Training 2012 topic, a 2012 White Sox / Sox Management and an Around Baseball - 2012 will open when spring training starts in February 2012.
Also a new version of Today's Game 2012 will start on Opening Day in April 2012 replacing the White Sox Spring Training 2012 topic.

Great picture, Andy.

Never heard of 'em.

even worse! only 5 socks!

I expect Method will find fault with its use here.
Give him some rangolis and tell him to ****.
EDIT: wow, s t f u gets censored! This thing is pretty smart.

I'm not sure if they can quite do that here... Rangolis are pretty complex.

As a card-carrying grinch and hater of most-things Christmas (especially those Lexus commercials), I am slightly offended. But I'll muddle through.

Andy,
Is there any reason whatsoever that my sig line and avatar as still blocked?
Neither are political what so ever.... Just curious.
-
Andy,
Is there any reason whatsoever that my sig line and avatar as still blocked?

Your signature +/or avatar are not blocked, nor have they ever been, by me.
I see on each and every one of your posts a signature line that says:
'“Become good at cheating and you never need to become good at anything else.”
I just looked at your Forum Profile settings, and you have the 'no avatar' box checked in the Personalized Picture section.
You also have the 'Don't show users' signatures' box checked in the Look and Layout section. By checking this box, you can't see anyone's 'signature line' (iincluding your own signature line) in each and every one of their/your posts.
These are the two reasons why your posts don't display an avatar and your signature line is not visible to you.
Once again, in case you are wondering, I have never changed/deleted or modified any of your avatar or signature settings.
-
Hah!!!
-
Hey Andy, can we ditch the Christmas stockings?
-
Yeah, since it's going to be New Year's Eve, how about a pic of someone passed out in the gutter?

or glasses of beer

Thanks Andy for the Roller Derby pic. I loved Roller Derby.

Thanks Andy for the Roller Derby pic. I loved Roller Derby.
You're welcome. Yes, I remember as a youngster growing up in the city of Chicago watching Roller Derby, All-Star Wrestling out of Minneapolis-St. Paul, followed by the Pro Bowling Tour on ABC on a Saturday late morning to mid-afternoon. Good times.
BTW, the picture is a Tribune archive photo with the caption:
An estimated 50,000 fans packed the old Comiskey Park to watch the Chicago Pioneers take on the Los Angeles Thunderbirds in a roller derby match in September 1972. The rough-and-tumble sport was invented in Chicago in the 1930s and enjoyed a few decades of popularity, thanks in part to television, before fading in the 70s.

There are also plenty of old Roller Derby/Rollergames video clips available to view at YouTube.

Those were good times
-
Are members' post counts accurate? Just wondering.
Not that I care much, but just a few days ago, Wshfl's post count was in the 500s and now it's in the 800s. I don't think he's made 300 posts in a week.
Makes me wonder if I've made 500-plus posts myself. Maybe not.
-
Thanks Andy for the uniform post. Its not a bad looking uniform. I suppose that the usage is to encourage more sales at the park. Personally I like the black ones . I hope we dont go through another uniform switch.
-
Oh and by the way Andy isnt that Dick Allen's jersey? My memory is kinda vague. That guy should be in the Hall. Much better than Santo
-
More talent than Santo, but not the better player. Hated Santo, but he did play a real good 3B on D, and he hit consistently for years. Allen was hurt a lot, had other on/off field problems, was not well liked by mgmt etc.... especially when he was a Phillie.
-

Yes.
Dick "Don't Call Me Richie" Allen wore #15 with the White Sox.
-
I kept looking at that jersey and kept looking, then it dawned on me. I saw him hit a rope in old Comiskey. Dont think it ever got 15' off the ground. It cleared the wall in LF by a couple of feet. It appeared rocket propelled. If it wasnt for the seats and the stands it would have left the park. Certainly impressed a guy like me. Much more impressive than Kittle's moon shots that went out of the park.

IIRC, Dick Allen also hit a line drive HR into the center field stands (a shot of over 450' that never had a downward arc).

Allen Deserves Hall More Than Santo, Hodges
By Tim Joyce - November 6, 2011
As in life, sentiment often trumps objective judgment when discussing accomplishments in sports. And that's how it should be. We humans are meant to inject some instinctive, heartfelt emotion into our daily actions and passions. The mixing of intuition and objectivity is what makes us different.
But when judging a player's career in a supposedly nonpartisan fashion, it's important to remove as much sentiment as possible to afford the truest accounting of a career. This is the task that confronts the voters for the Baseball Hall of Fame, who each year must discern the great from the very good - while leaving personal bias aside.
This is impossible, obviously, and frequently players make it into Cooperstown who are borderline in terms of accomplishments.

Yup same with this one, still going up when it cleared the wall. Even the foul pole in LF was 353, so you know it had to be 365-375 just to clear the wall.
-
Maybe I missed something, but what is the progress bar all about (under our board names)? What happens once you reach 100%?

thats where we used to have our gold stars... one you reach 100% you just stay there...

For the love of all that is decent in the world... can we please remove KW's smug face as the banner pic.

I agree with Method... it is offensive.

I'd be happy to go back to the Comiskey outfield seats scene.

Very offensive.

We might need a dedicated meme thread.... A meme-for-all for each banner pic throughout the season.
-
and banner pic must change every time we lose...

I see that ugly puss is still on the banner pic.

Heh, I get it... "Sox Opener"
-
Gah! I totally missed that! Nice work AndyMacFail.
And that is of course a TALKING White Sox Bottle Opener. I think that one features an exciting HR call by Ken "Hawk" Harrelson. Someone should send one of those to JBN.
-
Does the Cubs version feature a recording of the Lee Elia rant?
-
No, because if that were the case I'd own it. Actually make that several, as I think the recording "wears out" at some point.
There is one out there that features Rooney's call of the last out of the 2005 World Series. The Kids Above Auntie's Garage and other Basementeers were all damp over that one.

Great main-page pic, AndyMacFAIL. Those two were the best team ever.
Stroh's can! Busted, Harry! Pretty sure this is when he was shilling for Falstaff.

I guess I should have put my pic comment here!!
Need to find the pic of Harry with a Falstaff in one hand and a "Chicken Unlimited" drumstick in the other. ;)
-

Harry was the greatest. God I miss him.
-
Andy, Thanks for the Nellie Fox pic. Him along with Billy Pierce were my most favorite White Sox players. And it makes me very happy that Fox was finally inducted into the Hall. IMHO he was underrated but highly deserving of the honor.
-
Great to see Dick Allen up on the banner. What an incredible hitter he was, and I don't understand why he's not in the Hall of Fame.
-
Cannot comment on that as he was before my time....
However... Considering the nature of steroid claims... and the fact that FT's hall of fame credentials was a hotly contested debate.... How stupid are the same writers that questioned his credentials going to feel?
(this post was made to lure Shoeless out....)
-
I'm not following you. Why are Frank Thomas' HOF credentials contested? Because he was primarily a designated hitter for most of his career? I think that's an invalid point, as the DH is a legit position in the American League. Debating whether there should be a DH is another issue entirely.
-
Doesnt matter... while he was playing that was the big rub... I think after the steroid era... he'll end up being a unanimous selection.
-
I believe the big issue will be FT's being a DH. As for Dick Allen, like Nellie Fox, I believe beyond a doubt Dick Allen belongs in the Hall. Like certain players, such as Santo and a few others who had a lot of detractors who on the veterans committee wouldnt vote for Allen. I couldnt believe it that such a player wasnt in the Hall.
-
Doesnt matter... while he was playing that was the big rub...
Yeah, but it's well established that FT never juiced. And still, he was able to accomplish as much or more as the guys in his era that did.
He was robbed of at least one more MVP award and probably a couple more Silver Slugger awards too, just because the guys who topped him in those instances were loaded up with 'roids.

Ang had it at the top of the page for about a day...
I wonder if Andy noticed that Blackie referred to him as "Ang," a la Don Knotts to Mr. Griffith.

I don't quite get that. I'm pretty gentle and nice and I totally get reconciliatory when I sense I've rubbed somebody the wrong way- ask SoxRule and WshflThnkng. I'm a lover not a fighter.
Now those guys over on The World Today and Method on pretty much any topic- that's some confrontational shiit.

Why deface a 2-dollar bill with Bevington's picture on the page banner?
-
Why deface a 2-dollar bill with Bevington's picture on the page banner?
Because I couldn't find an image editing site that has a three dollar bill template.
Also, a 2-dollar bill kind of works for TBev. It's legal but very few people carry one on their person and would prefer their money in other denominations. Just like Bevington.
-
I love 2-dollar bills. I seek them out. I am offended to see TBev on one.

Before the question arises, the six closed & locked topics have not been deleted. They are still here. They've just been relegated to the 2nd page of 'general discussion', so only the 14 active topics are now showing on 'page one'.

Heh, that bare patch behind the mound on the Sale pic reminds me of the ball dispenser Veeck had installed at Comiskey. I remember it being behind home plate, but wasn't there something that came out of the ground behind the mound too?
-
I thought so. How funny.
That however, is a sprinkler system box.
-
Seems that if a batted ball hit that thing, it would carom at a crazy angle.
Really, this comment was just an excuse to use the word "carom."
-
Not knowing anything about sprinkler systems, one would think you could design it such that the valve box is not between the lines, or maybe make ita little deeper and cover it with sod.
-
BTW, what's that other thingy that is below his glove on the actual mound?
-
That's where pitchers can clean their spikes off.

That was my next ? talk about asked and answered.

Dont recollect the thread you asked in Andy.
But i've had the issue with the quote feature since v14... have it now with v15 as well.

You use Google Chrome too, correct?
Do you have the same problem there too?

You use Google Chrome too, correct?
Do you have the same problem there too?
Indeed, if you simply hit "quote", it flashes a bar that says "loading" then does nothing, once you hit quick post, the post you hit quote on, is waiting for you to post under.
( this post was just tested and made from Chrome v21.0.1180.83 m)
-
okay, I think I figured out how to correct this problem as the 'quote feature' works fine for me now.
How to fix it for yourself:
step 1: click on 'profile' (located right under the Ron Kittle card to the middle of the horizon)
step 2: then click on 'look and layout' (located far to the left under the modify profile column)
step 3: near the bottom of the page, there is a "Use quick reply on topic display" box. Set it to 'show, on by default'. then click the rectangular black button labeled 'Change profile' and that should correct the problem.
I just did the above steps and the 'quote feature' works fine for me now and the flashing 'loading' bar is gone. The quick reply box now stays open (ugly) but the quote feature now works.
Update: If you don't like the quick reply box showing at the bottom of each topic page, go back to step 3 and set the "Use quick reply on topic display" box to 'don't show at all'. Then once again click on the black rectangular 'Change profile' button. Your quick reply feature be inoperative and when you hit the 'quote feature' on a post it will work fine.

Now, wait a minute. THIS is the banner ad I'm seeing now.
What the h e l l ?

"They" track your online activity and know your interests and tailor the ads accordingly. I'm not kidding. It's actually kind of creepy. Method or JosephC could probably characterize this better than I can.
A friend was showing me this three-section lasagna pan she wants, and now that damn thing shows up in an ad every once in awhile on various sites. I'm taking a cruise on SilverSea next month, so I'm getting SilverSea ads on this page, in addition to a ton of other pitches for different European travel.
-
GAH! It followed me here!

Cool idea though. Do a regular meat and marinara one, then maybe a white chicken one,and a vegetarian one for the pussies at your dinner.

I had it for watches for awhile

And it is creepy

But I don't look at dating sites, or anything like that. You're saying maybe they know my age bracket and think it's something I might click on?
I think that's a more generic one, based on the fact that this site is a sports forum. They figure "well there've gotta be some losers on that site that'll click through". And by golly, maybe they're right.

Are you single Fury? they might know that... and your age...

hell, they even know how many times you spank the monkey Furio.

If each living male was assigned a grandfather clock that would move one hour each time he did that, Fury would have himself a mighty powerful fan.

hahaha, yeah, but think how noisy it would be.

Like those chimes and shiit at the beginning of that Pink Floyd song "Time".

wow, I just bought a garment bag on ebags.com and they're already following me here. Btw, females here in particular, if you haven't checked that site out, take a look next time you are in the market for purse, etc etc (which is pretty much weekly I believe)- great deals.

Pete, off-topic for a sec. You had mentioned being away for a week or so, did you go fishing?
-
Yep. Went up to the Big Horn Mountains in north central Wyoming and went flyfishing for a few days. It's become an annual late summer / early fall event over the past three years. I go alone, sleep in the back of my Suburban, and fish all day. I like going up there cause I can get there in about 5-6 hours and there is very little fishing pressure, so the fishing is a bit better for a guy like me that isn't that good. One of the rivers I fish is the Middle Fork of the Powder River, which is in the "Hole In the Wall" country that was a hideout for Butch Cassiday and the Sundance Kid. The river is in the bottom of a canyon that's about 500 feet deep. The other place I like to go is the North Fork of the Tongue River which is further north in the Big Horns.
-
Sounds like a nice peaceful time. Fishing is the most relaxing thing to do in the world.
-
Not.
-
A garment bag in my vocabulary is a plastic bag that covers a suit or sport coat that you hang in the closet or take with you when you travel like in a car.
-
Pete, next time you might want to visit Yellowstone and fish there. The kids and I fished Yellowstone Lake. We cought some rainbows with spinning reels
-
Have been to Yellowstone more than 20 times over the past 30 years but rarely have fished there. Fish there are too smart for me. Attraction of the Big Horns is that its quick to get to for a short get away and most fisherman who come to Wyoming to fish blow right past the Big Horns because they want to get to fish Yellowstone and the Tetons. So the fishing is easier and much more likely to have solitude while fishing.
But absolutely love Yellowstone as it is IMO the most spectacular of the National Parks (at least in the lower 48 states), esp with regard to the variety of experience you have (ie wildlife, mountains, geysers, fishing etc.). We always spend a couple of nights in the Lamar Valley to see wolves and have never been disappointed. Last time I went with my sons and we got skunked in the Lamar and the boys were bummed. But on the way out we had to drive south thru the Hayden valley and as we entered the valley saw a bunch of cars pulled over with people with binos; a sure sign of wildlife. So we stopped and, sure enough, about 200+ yards off the roadside there was a small stand of trees with a dead moose or bison. There was grizzly sow and cub actively feeding on the carcass, with a wolf pacing back and forth trying to sneak in for a bite and a bald eagle sitting in the tree waiting for his turn. Pretty cool and wiped the look of disapointment right off my kids' faces.
If you haven't been to Yellowstone you HAVE to go, esp if you have kids in the 6-12 age range.
-

Oh, I see you opted to go with the Power Cyan model. Bold and sassy!
-
It's a shame really. The Citron Green would have been far more fashion forward.
-
I think that's more royal blue than cyan, because, you know, I wanted to go with a Cubs color. Maybe it is cyan, I will find out upon delivery.
If I could have found something even uglier or more standout-ish, would've done that. Our normal large luggage bag is some weird combo of grey and teal. Makes it easier to grab off of carousel, and also minimizes the likelihood of some moran mistakenly picking up your bag. . . especially since they really don't have the guys checking tags coming out of the baggage claim area on many flights anymore.
Our flight to destination is on Lufthansa. . .you know, the one that just went on strike. Wonderphuckingful.
-
Nobody will steal that, heh.
-
Shoulda went with the dusty pink, right Loveland?

We were there in 88 during the fires and returned in 89. The wildlife is absolutely worth the experience. We drove up this road and right beside us laying down was this buffalo. I doubt we could have opened the door fully we were that close. We rolled down the window to take pics. Had he started to get up we would have raced away but he never moved. Great sight. Then there was a male moose in the water eating . Black bears too. Its the most fantastic of all parks. I believe the park size is close to the entire state of Rhode Island its so large.
-
size is close to the entire state of Rhode Island its so large...
Blackie?
-
... that when it sits around the house, it sits "around" the house. (insert picture of Gene Rayburn or Gabe Kaplan here)
PS: Goofy colored luggage + finding it easily at the baggage claim = 100% correct. Phuck Phasion.
-
Shoulda went with the dusty pink, right Loveland?
Ooh, not for luggage boatdrink. It soils easily and is difficult to clean.
-
Actually according to Wikkipedia Rhode Island encompasses 1214 sq miles of land whereas Yellowstone Park encompasses 3468.4 sq miles which means that Yellowstone is close to 3 times the size of Rhode Island
-
has Oats been around?

Not for a long time.
-
Its post season time, Oscar Gamble does not bring up any reminder of that. Need a new pic
-
Is Gamble really moderated?
-
HAH!
-
Oscar Gamble was a part of one of my favorite Whire Sox teams, the famed "Southside Hitmen". As for the fate of that team, it didnt make the postseason, but if their season would have played with todays rules they sure would have. That would have been an interesting year had that happened. If my memory is correct they didnt miss the postseason by much.
-
Amazing that you liked that team, it was one of the worst defensive teams we have ever put on the field. I was not a big fan, did not like giving up all our young pitching to be a softball team.
-
Well I did like that team. I didnt follow the team to the degree that I would have found that they were so weak defensively. But they almost pounded their way to a penant. Zisk and G*amble were awesome.. We could have had a similar situation this year with Dunn and Konerko had Kong not gotten his wrist injured
-
As much as most of us "loved" that 1977 team, they actually faded in Aug, ended up 12 games out and at 90-72 only had the sixth best record in the AL. Even by today's ridiculous rules, they would not have qualified for the playoffs.
I think they captured our fancy because they were a home run hittin' team, something no Sox fan up to that time had ever seen.
http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/AL/1977.shtml
-
I somehow remember them closer than that, but I guess the old memory isnt what it used to be
-
Ah, the sumer of '77.... both Chicago teams in first place in late June, IIRC. "Subway Series" iron-ons in the Sunday Tribune.
-
I somehow remember them closer than that, but I guess the old memory isnt what it used to be
I'm with you. When I looked them up I was surpised at how far they had fallen off the pace by the end.
They were still only a few games out at the beginning of Sept and 90 wins isn't small change. Just happened to be a year when there were more the the usual number ofteams with 90+ wins.
-
Has anyone else been havingperiodic problems connecting to the board, or is it just me?

That was probably meant for me.

Cool! Kinda Christmassy in here.

Yeah, love the new background. Nice job, Andy.
I think we should leave it up til spring training. ;D

What's with the the Cubbie Blue accents? Is that for Shoe?

Doesnt Spring Training begin next week? Its about time to dust off the Spring Training thread
-
Everyone is so freaking negative about our chances, not sure why we should
If our pitching gets more consistent, which it just might, I like our chances. Viciedo and De Aza need to take next step and be more consistent, moreso Viciedo than De Aza. Rios needs to stay consistent. I am ok with Keppinger instead of Youkilis. Ramirez and Beckham need to add a tad more, both had nice RBI totals for bottom of lineup guys however. Kong should improve, he needs to do better in the run production area. Dunn should be more like last year than the year before. Flowers needs to at least drive in some runs and play good D. He is might likeliest to come not thru.
So if our pitching comes thru, I like our chances very much.
-
Well, there are a lot of "so and so needs to .... " in your post, which scares me. Would feel a little better if we were able to acquire another reliable bat.
-
Because our division is weak I don't know what to think.
-
I'm not negative about our chances, msf. i think our chances are halfway decent.
-
Rule, I know there are a lot more if's and but's than Detroit has, but if the stars align, we have enough talent. That is how baseball is sometimes.
-
I certainly agree with you there, msf. Last year is a good example of how things don't always play out the way they "should". Detroit did not play to their capabilities and it's possible they don't this season either. It's possible one or two of their stars have massive down years or get injured and a couple of guys on our team have insanely good years.
You just never know. If our pitching holds up that should at least keep us in the race.
-
Yep, all we can ask for is a chance, and I think this team has the capability of competing. Not like we are horrible.
-
I can see the Sox having a season much like last year. Some success and and a lot of hope to start the year, then an inevitable fade and a slide in August-September. Just enough winning early on to suck us in, getting our interest and hopes up, and then the crushing agony of repeated defeats after the All-Star break to seal our doom.
That's the Kenny Williams Rick Hahn way.
-
I just hope we beat the teams we're supposed to beat. Hate it when we look competitive and then lose to your Kansas City types.
-
Some success and and a lot of hope to start the year, then an inevitable fade and a slide in August-September. Just enough winning early on to suck us in, getting our interest and hopes up,
As crushing as the end of last year was (and believe me, that sick feeling stuck with me a long time), I would still rather have a team that keeps us interested most of the year than one that is out of it by the end of May. I can't even watch the games if I know they're meaningless.
Of course, the ideal scenario is the team keeps us interested all year and then actually makes the playoffs...don't get me wrong....but I have no desire to watch a team lose 90 games (whether by design or not).
Hopefully after this year when a couple big contracts come off the books, Hahn will be able to put a better team together.
-
Detroit pretty much still has the same sucky chemistry as they did last year. While it may be undefineable -- some teams just click, and some teams repel. It is what it is.
-
I would still rather have a team that keeps us interested most of the year than one that is out of it by the end of May.
I don't know which kind of team is worse from a fan's standpoint. The first variety is heartbreaking, whereas the second type is depressing.

Andy, 3 days to Sox training camp opens. Get it?

I suggest all of you who failed to bookmark JoeyC's backup board at proboards, do so now so you'll know where to go when C-A-F craps out next time.

57 degrees today, but colder in here by the lake. It broke 50 a few days ago and of course I saw the idiots out in their t-shirts and shorts. That's when I know warm weather is coming- idiots out in their t-shirts and shorts well before they should be doing that, but at least it's an indicator.
Roger Triemstra got evicted and is living in his Pacer, otherwise he'd be posting here himself. It's been buried under a foot of snow for several months and he's had to use a space heater via extension cords to nearby buildings (don't tell them) to keep warm.
Not a big problem on that score, but elsewhere he's not too thrilled about the addition of this colored fellow they've added to the WGN weather team.

How does the cubs board get around the bad word filter?
Maybe Dave23 purchased "ad free credits" as that's the only way to get an uncensored board on CAF. Unless there's a glitch in the system that is allowing the BBF to be censor-free.
BTW, "ad free credits" for a forum cost anywhere from $8 to $20 @ month depending on the number of ad credits you need. Not worth $100 a year to allow one to show off their limited vocabulary. Especially when installing a free AdBlock on your browser eliminates the pesky adverts.
http://support.createaforum.com/8/censor-complaintsinformation-1053/ (http://support.createaforum.com/8/censor-complaintsinformation-1053/)
Edited to add: Someone at BBF must have bought some 'ad free credits' as I opened my IE 11 browser (which doesn't have an AdBlock installed) and 'ads' appear here and on Phill23's Bulls board but there are no ads on the BBF.
-
The only thing I have purchased at BBF is a chat room, which no one uses...
-
The only thing I have purchased at BBF is a chat room, which no one uses...
dave23 ---
You might not have bought them but "Ad Free Credits" can be bought by any of the site's Admin(s) or Moderator(s). There are six people on the BBF who have that option and and there are four people here that can so do for this site (Shoeless, JoeyC, Blacksox and me). All they have to do is use the Admin sign-in and click on the "Forum Upgrades" which is on the left side.
I just checked again and with my AdBlock Plus disabled, ads show up here and on Phill23's Bulls site while the BBF remains ad-free. Someone from the list of 6 Admins at the BBF must have purchased the credits as that's the only logical explanation for why the BBF is ad-free and is not censored. Unless there's an abnormality in the C-A-F system that's affecting your site.
-
The only person who knows the 'Admin' login password is me.
According to the top left corner of my home page, there are 10000 ad free credits available. No clue where they came from, unless they were thrown in when I purchased the chat room.
-
dave23
C-A-F is not a site like leaguelineup.com as there is no unique "Admin" password here, Phill23's Bulls forum or on your BBF Forum. Any person who is an Admin or Moderator on a site can purchase ad credits. That means not only you but CurtOne, mO, wmljohn, Pekin & grrrlacher have an Admin button on the BBF which would allow them to access the "Forum Upgrade" page where they have the option to purchase ad credits. If you're interested in solving the mystery, why not just ask those 5 if they purchased the credits?
Phill23 upgraded me along with jbn and a few others to Admin on his Bulls forum after the fact. When I sign-in there using my original password I see an Admin button and when I access it, I see the "Forum Upgrade" option which would allow me to purchase ad credits or a chatroom.
I really don't care that we're able to use vulgarity on the BBF and can't do the same here. Method might prefer the option to use vulgarity but I'm pretty positive that someone like Loveland wouldn't like it.
My only complaint is the C-A-F list is too restrictive and includes non-vulgar words.
Like when I try to post this guy's name....

...I get Oscar **** unless I trick the system by typing Oscar G@mble. I'd prefer to use an "a" than be forced to use the 'at sign' emoticon to identify the man.
-
Correct. You confused me when you referred to the Admin sign-in...I took that to mean that you had to be logged in as Admin specifically.
I can't imagine any of the other admins buying credits to simply enable the ability to curse. If memory serves, the ability at BBF began around the same time I had grrrlacher make config changes to enable tapatalk on the forum. The rest of the admins dont do much more than start a new topic once in a while, or approve a new user. I do all the archiving and other admin stuff.

Is that Freddie Mercury in the banner picture? :-)

IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ!
I'm not sure if anyone else noticed as we have so few visitors at this site, this place has had periods of inaccessibility over the last few weeks. Some lasting over an hour at a time. The explanation for this is create-a-forum has been a target of DDOS attacks.
see their facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Create-a-Forum/141276692550178
So I recommend that if you haven't done so by now, bookmark Joey C's proboards site in case this place goes down for a significant period of time.

Got it

Got it
Ditto, thanks Andy.

If you're wondering what has happened to the CWSFF logo and JJ's favorite photo that are normally seen at the top of each page, they are temporarily unavailable.
They, along with many other photos used on this site, are stored at photobucket.com.
That site is currently down.
I don't know if they're undergoing maintenance or are experiencing DDOS attacks or are in a 'legal dispute' like C-A-F was last week.
Odds are the site will be back soon, possibly before you've read this post.

Next season's MLB schedules have been released.
Here is the 2017 White Sox schedule:

Three games in Colorado in July. Cool.
-
25% chance I'll be there. If I do, does the good doctor want to buy a Blacksox a beer?
-
Now why would the Black one be travelling to Colorado? ;D
-
I might have to make that trip as well :)
Usually go to NYC that time of year.
-
25% chance I'll be there. If I do, does the good doctor want to buy a Blacksox a beer?
Of course!
-
In 2005 we went to all 3 games in Denver. Last time the Sox swung this direction Igot to see Buehrle pitch. Hopefully something worthy of those last experiences will take place.
I am not sure if meeting Blackie and Pete Ward would meet thatstandard or not.
-
I won't speak for Blackie but in my case you'd likely be lowering your standards.
-
Blackie has standards?
Who'da thunk it!

What to do in the next month or so with Sale +/or Quintana?
Vote in the new poll.
One vote per person. You can change your vote if you change your mind.
Poll is open for 10 days.

In case anyone is wondering what happen to the photo of the Comiskey Park shower, the site where it is stored (photobucket.com) is having problems. The photo of the "young JhonJeter" will return when photobucket is fixed.
-
who in the picture is jeter?
BTW, looked at the weather at the bottom of the screen & noticed the radar image is for January 25th. Can that be fixed?

no one in the photo was the real life young JJ. When I first posted the pic about five years ago, I commented the kid flashing the peace sign was probably what a young JJ was like as a youth. JJ said it wasn't him but it did remind himself of a young JJ. JJ liked the photo and cropped the face to use as his avatar for a time so when he died we put in up again as a tribute to him
Congratulations on noticing the animated radar gif is stuck on January 25th. I wondered when someone would finally notice it. I'm disappointed in method in not finding it as when this forum first opened he and JJ scoured every bit of this site looking for mistakes or hidden easter eggs to bring to my attention. No it can't be fixed. The radar gif was feature from the tribune site and when they revamped their site, they abandoned the radar so I have no way to fix it. I've looked a few times for another active radar that would work here to replace it but so far I've come up empty.

or hidden easter eggs
haha!
-
I just noticed the Buehrle Day stuff at the bottom of the page, below the stock footage of January Weather Radar. Very cool.
-
Thanks for pointing that out Blackie.

Before anyone asks what happened to many of the photos, here's the explanation:
http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-40492668
https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/06/30/photobucket_charging_400yr_3rdparty_pgs/
Without warning, Photobucket, com has changed their terms of use and eliminated "3rd Party Hosting" privileges from their free accounts. They now require a "Plus 500" account which costs $400 a year for 3rd party hosting. Needless to say unless they do a 180 on their policy change, I'll be looking for another site to host those photos.

The mobile version blows. But the regular is bad to. It is not optimized for mobile
-
I think I figured it out

With the regular season coming to an end, the Today's Game - 2017 topic will soon be locked. I'll leave it open until Thursday and then it'll be locked until next spring.
The 2017 MLB Playoffs / World Series topic is now unlocked and ready for posting.

Happy holidays to you too.
Now, why is the edgy tribute to John Jeter replaced with a positively Cubish animated character? Part of the reason I enjoy hanging out with guys is there are a lot of grown women out there that find this kind of thing cute. Most of them in the greater Chicago area are fans of the Chicago National League ball club. I do not like that type of woman nor do i find this cute, plus I am not 7. It is time to remove the Jeter trubute banner but please give me classic, elegant or edgy, not juvenile.
Thanks! Merry Christmas!

Careful what you ask for.
Hope you enjoy the 2001 Topps Heritage card of your all-time favorite player in its place.
It's a classic! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Haha! Good one!
And better than cute...

Ohhh, I saw the picture of Foulke and figured he died or something. Now I know why it is posted.

Nice work with the forum picture, Ang.

I concur.

Hey Andy,
The links on the main menu to the other sites are broken. I thought about trolling on the Bleacher Bum’s Forum last night but alas the link is down. (I did figure out how to get there to read the wailing and gnashing of teeth.)

The censorship of the world today thread, while Andy mocks us with his superior takes (his recent Godwin post) is terrible.
Andy is basically Donald Trump wrapped in a Bill Barr blanket.
-
Based on Andy's recent move to continue to censor this board to his whims. I'm not inclined to post here any more.
You can find me at Kshitij Sherard on Facebook. I can also be reached at Madcat6980@gmail.com.
To my knowledge MSF, Peteward, and Shawnabs are about the only folks on here that i'd care to keep up with where i don't have a connection with on another medium.
I have never agreed with Billsharp's political views in the 21 years I've "known" him. But it'll be a cold day in hell before I accept someone silencing anyone.
I encourage all participants to this board to register at JoeyC's backup board from 2011.

I still have my link for that other site. Guessing if I ever went to the politics thread I would be joining you. Are you still in TB area? My brother got a place in Venice and I will be getting down that way to visit one of these years.

Ah, stick around and talk baseball with us. I don't know you and don't care what your politics are. It is my experience with these boards is that a lot of people in charge set ill defined rules of "conduct" for the posters. Some of the owners and/or moderators have political bents that they take out on those who they see as "problem's" in their fiefdom.
I've been kicked off, suspended, or otherwise bullied by several boards in the past not for anything vulgar or obscene but for views that the people in charge found disturbing to their own belief systems. On a few occasions I just left because who needs that crap leveled at them constantly?
By the way, I hate censorship myself other than that of when people get vile or threaten other folks. That, to me, is grounds
for kicking them out but that's about it.

Well I follow Method on Facebook - but it’s not enough. We had many years of wonderful baseball and political conversation. Unfortunately the art of political discourse has been lost. Method always listened to why Other posters thought the way they did. Of course we already lost Boat for basically the same reason.
Too bad because the baseball knowledge here was incomparable. Not to mention witty intelligent.

I hear you. One of the troubles of this world is that intelligent political argument is no more in this country. Instead the left wants to dictate and force submission and if you argue with them you are called racist or worse. I used to argue with leftists but no more. Once I state my opinion and get told I suck, I'm a racist, or whatever, I just quit the "conversation". It just isn't worth arguing with idiots.

please take ALL political discussions to "The World Today" topic. It has never been locked and it is still active but was relocated to a new spot on this forum:

Method: I hope you stick around!
Loveland: Great post! Totally agree with you about the lost art of political discourse. Spouting of spoon-fed talking points from your political channel of choice and trying to "win" is not discourse, it's just lame.
Bird: Your first two sentences and last sentence are very nice, but in between it would have been cooler if you weren't so hard core partisan (see "lost art" above)... that dumb sh*t (from both sides) gets very boring and tiresome.

I am not a "cool" person though. I am a partisan with deep seeded beliefs. Yeah I'll negotiate or give in on some matters but not anything that goes against my core beliefs. Like I said earlier, if this was a true "debate" in this country, I'd gladly participate in it but it is not. THe media has made sure that only one side of the political aisle has its voice agreed with and supported. Hell, it even assists the left in driving home liberal and socialist ideology. So, real "debate" never can occur.
THis country is split in half with very few stragglers in the middle. IT really is an ideological war going on right now which down the road probably will turn into another kind of war and this one on the streets. Hell, one large section on the left has already thrown down the gauntlet with the rioting, murders and arson going on all last year. This isn't going to stop because the people pulling the strings at the top of the Democratic administration don't want it to stop because it serves their purpose.
THis is what I believe and many people don't like to hear it. Its not based on anykind of hate or bias, just my logical assessment of things as they are. I think that a lot of people are trying to fool themselves that things are going to work out and that somehow the notion of freedom from government tyranny and the principles that the United States was created upon are simply going to die away easily. That AIN'T going to happen:)

Nobody's saying you're not allowed to have those thoughts.
Everyone is saying you should post those thoughts in the appropriate thread, because a lot of us come to boards like this to get away from politics.
Please use this board courteously.

I am not trying to be discourteous. I see a post in a thread and I reply to it. I am simply reacting to thing that are posted. I have never initiated anything political on this board. I went to the place where Andy took a thread and no one really has posted anything political there other than myself. Like I said originally, Method talked about leaving the board because of censorship and I posted that he should stay and talk baseball and commented about what I thought about censorship and board moderation. That is it.

Cool picture, Ang.

I’m hoping Jose Valentin’s sweet mustache will make a banner appearance, right?

Great cover pic Andy. I stole it and made it a temporary profile pic on Facebook.

Great cover pic Andy. I stole it and made it a temporary profile pic on Facebook.
I "borrowed" it from the Chicago White Sox twitter account:

Yeah - I saw that. Long day and no time to wallow in the Twitter Sewer until after I saw it here.

Suggestion / question for Andy (and the rest of the forum):
Would it be helpful to separate out the "Baseball Almanac" posts from Andy from the "White Sox History" thread?
I'm realizing that discussion types of posts can get lost amid the long almanac posts.
I for one enjoy those posts, so just trying to figure out how to reconcile (or if there's a need to do so)
-
I think that is a better way, seems to just be too much otherwise. I have quit going to that thread and I would miss any chatter that would go on in there.
-
Cool by me

I changed the photo to the 2022 White Sox #1 draft choice from Oswego East H.S.
....now heading back into my sabbatical from this place.

Andy - don't go! We all miss you and your commentary!

Thanks Ang! I was so sick of seeing Oscar Gamble's chewing gum.

photo changed to one of the few bright spots of this season, Johnny Cueto.
