Sox enter spring training without major medical concerns

Club used disabled list 11 times last season

By Mark Gonzales, Chicago Tribune reporter - 10:02 p.m. CST, February 20, 2012

GLENDALE, Ariz. — When the White Sox's front office and coaching staff conduct their daily spring meetings starting Wednesday, their roster scenarios won't be affected largely by whether certain players will be physically ready by Opening Day.

For the first time in several Februarys, the Sox enter spring training without major medical questions to players projected for the 25-man roster.

That includes pitcher Jake Peavy, who is expected to be fully recovered from major surgery in July 2010 that sidelined him for 10 months and still caused him bouts of arm fatigue.

Brent Lillibridge, whose versatility could earn him more playing time against left-handed pitchers, said last month he is fully recovered from a fractured right wrist that sidelined him for the final three weeks of the 2011 season.

Jordan Danks out to prove he belongs on White Sox
Outfielder bulks up, hopes to cut down on strikeouts

By Mark Gonzales, Chicago Tribune reporter - 9:39 p.m. CST, February 19, 2012

When Jordan Danks arrives Tuesday at Camelback Ranch, he hopes the White Sox's coaching staff takes notice of the additional 15 pounds of muscle on his 6-foot-5 frame that could help result in a major league roster spot in the near future.

Danks, the younger brother of Sox left-hander John Danks, isn't discouraged by the prospect of starting his third consecutive season at Triple-A Charlotte after being left exposed but not selected in the Rule 5 draft in December and then seeing the Sox sign Kosuke Fukudome to a one-year contract on Tuesday.

"My motivation preceded all of this," Danks said Friday in a telephone interview.

Danks plans to arrive one week earlier than required because he wants to show the staff he has made an array of changes that he believes can help him improve on his .257 batting average and 14 home runs, cut down on his 155 strikeouts and still maintain the quality defense he displayed last year at Charlotte.

Chicago White Sox: Can Alex Rios Rebound and Earn His $12 Million in 2012?

By Jon Fromi - (Featured Columnist) on February 18, 2012

Chicago White Sox center fielder Alex Rios has the look of a five-tool baseball player. He has the contract to match.

The problem lies when you wind him up and turn him loose on a baseball field.

Rios, along with new acquisition Adam Dunn, was the poster boy for a White Sox team that had the big-money pedigree but underperformed their way to a third-place finish in 2011. Nary a day would go by that didn't feature a reminder of the folly of Rios' contract.

After his solid 2010 season, expectations were for a similar performance from Rios in the middle of a potent South Side offensive attack. The reality was that of the Murderer's Row some envisioned, only Paul Konerko (and to a lesser extent the recently departed Carlos Quentin) actually delivered the goods at the plate.

I'm skeptical that 15 lbs will lower his strikeout rate.

Add that to the Spring Training Cliche list:

1) Added muscle
2) Lost weight
3) New exercise routine
4) Finally healthy
5) Vision improvement
6) Working on a new pitch
7) Expected to run more

Nobody looks better than White Sox trainer Herm Schneider, who lost about 70 pounds over the offseason.

Sox players all out with "All-In'' slogan

By Mark Gonzales - Tribune reporter - 2:41 p.m. CST, February 22, 2012

GLENDALE, Ariz. - The Chicago White Sox's 2012 slogan is "Appreciate the Game," which will be gladly received by the players after last year's "All-In'' theme that collapsed during an 83-loss season.

"The All-In thing got abused last year," reliever Matt Thornton said. "I’m glad that one is over with, and it didn’t work out well, anyway. It’s one of those things I can’t wait to get out on the field and start playing games.

"We have a lot of guys itching to get out there, and some young guys itching to go out and prove what they can do and make this team and prove they’re ready to go somewhere during the season. There's a good mix of things out here.”

Sox can learn from Arizona in bouncing back

By Mark Gonzales - Tribune reporter - 11:39 a.m. CST, February 22, 2012

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The White Sox are counting on rebound seasons from Adam Dunn, Alex Rios and Gordon Beckham in their quest to challenge for the American League Central title despite slim odds.

They’re also hoping that former Sox great Robin Ventura can lead the team as well as he performed for the Sox during most of his exceptional 16-year career in the same manner Kirk Gibson did last season with Arizona.

In fact, the situations are somewhat similar. The Sox haven’t advanced to the post-season since 2008. The Diamondbacks, meanwhile, overcame two last-place finishes in the National League West to make a 29-game improvement and overtake defending World Series champion San Francisco.

Chicago White Sox @whitesox
From #WhiteSox manager Robin Ventura's press conference earlier today...

On arriving: I’m tired of just looking at paper. It’s nice to just get here and see guys in uniform, see guys hitting and throwing…

Robin on what he wants out of ST: Obviously the goal is 2 get as prepared as u can 4 Opening Day & 4 the season…

…That’s what spring is for– to get prepared to actually play in the season.

On Detroit as the favorite: Detroit has earned that, coming off what they did last season and signing some players…

But it’s not going to change the way we approach anything, we’re not going to concede anything to anybody.

Waitaminnit, the players not only pay any heed, but are somehow affected by, any particular year's marketing slogan? Christ.

Ventura enters Sox camp with an open mind
'As far as guys coming here with a clean slate, I'm the guy for that'

By Mark Gonzales, Chicago Tribune reporter - 11:20 p.m. CST, February 22, 2012

GLENDALE, Ariz. — New manager, open battles.

That's what Robin Ventura was claiming Wednesday on the eve of the White Sox's first workout.

"There is competition with everything," Ventura said. "As far as guys coming here with a clean slate, I'm the guy for that because I haven't seen them enough to pinpoint exactly who's doing what as far as the bullpen. It's open this spring seeing how guys do, what our needs are, and we'll go from there."

White Sox's rotation must make up for loss of Buehrle
Humber: 'People are going to have to step up'

By Mark Gonzales, Chicago Tribune reporter - 11:01 p.m. CST, February 22, 2012

GLENDALE, Ariz. — As the White Sox embark on life without manager Ozzie Guillen during their first workout for pitchers and catchers, a lingering question will be how the team copes without at least 10 victories, 30 starts and 200 innings for 11 consecutive seasons from Mark Buehrle.

"People are going to have to step up," Philip Humber said Wednesday at Camelback Ranch, where Robin Ventura will be the most noticeable change after Guillen's eight eventful seasons as the Sox's manager.

Although the rotation is believed to be the most stable area of the Sox's projected 25-man roster, Ventura spoke of competition throughout the spring training roster that includes an alignment of Jake Peavy, John Danks, Gavin Floyd, Humber and Chris Sale, who will make the transformation from reliever.

I can see right now how this season is going to go for me:

February: bored.
March: a bit curious.
April: disappointed.
May: bored.
June: slightly hopeful.
July: bored.
August: mildly disgusted.
September: bored.
October: disinterested.
