Changing a crown shouldn't require a patient to be put out.  Sometimes a crowned tooth does require a root canal if additional decay occurs and it wasn't done earlier, but that still shouldn't require anything other than local.  It would be impossible to change a crown without a temporary having been put in place in a prior appointment as the impressions needed for the new crown almost always  require the destruction of the first.
