I liked McCann - a lot. He had a knack for big plays like Creede talk me out of being upset.
I liked him too, but Grandal appears to be the better player. Out of all the qualifier catchers last year (by #innings) Grandal was #2 on pitch framing. McCann was dead last. That is something that truly helps out pitchers, especially young pitchers who do not always get breaks from the umps. Grandal has more power, hit 28 homers last year and in past 4 years is #2 homer run hitter among catchers behind that Sanchez guy on the Yankees. He also walked 109 times to 32 or so for McCann. Therefore, even tho McCann out hit him like .280 something to .240 something, Grandal has the better OBP. Grandal has the most RBIs for catchers in the past 4 years. He is 31, a year or two older than McCann, but keeps himself if good shape. I heard he was a leader that helped turn around that Brewer team last year.
I would keep them both, send Collins back to AAA so he can put up some big numbers and maybe become trade bait or maybe he does well enough we want to keep him and he can take over for McCann. Giolito likes to pitch to McCann so there is that. Plus Grandal played 1B in 20 games last year. When McCann plays as C then Grandal can DH or play 1B and let Jose DH.
C was not a position of need as much as RF or DH, but this can basically help with DH and it improves our defense a lot if he can help our young pitching by stealing strikes. One thing to remember tho, as soon as live umps go away, the edge a framer gives a team basically goes away. So that part of his game only helps us a year or a couple max.
