Even if the Orioles granted a 72-hr window to work out an extension, Machado has absolutely no reason not test free agency. He's going to get a MEGA contract from someone and it makes no sense for him not to see what's out there and play other teams against each other to keep raising the bidding. The Sox may offer a very, very big amount but there's no amount the Dodgers or Yankees couldn't top if they decide they really want him. And for as good as Machado is, there does get to be a point where the money he'll command is just not practical. Forget about Bryce Harper, too. That guy's a dbag.

There's one reason to consider agreeing to a multi-year contract now before reaching free agency next off-season.  It's called potential injury.  Just think of two recent White Sox pitchers, Gavin Floyd and John Danks.  Floyd turned down the multi-year deal and Danks took it.  Floyd got hurt and never got a big contract offer again.  Danks got hurt too but AFTER he signed the pre-free agency $60M deal so he collected on all of it.

Now the odds favor the player getting more money by waiting until free agency, but injuries do happen which seriously affect their earning potential.  Just ask Gavin Floyd as Danks' career earnings are more than double Floyd's even though Floyd accumulated more MLB service time than Danks.

The only way I see a Machado deal working out is if the Sox can sign him to a big extension. Even then, I'd imagine that a trade would have to involve Anderson going to Baltimore and Machado playing SS (something he has said he wants to do).

...but I guess that wouldn't make sense either, since the Orioles aren't really in need of a shortstop....

Andy - the odds of a serious career altering injury is MUCH higher for a pitcher than a position player. Your point isn't very strong.

Personally I'd rather keep Anderson at SS and play Machado at 3rd where we are weak. Or we could move Anderson to 3rd and play Machado at SS.

I think Carlos Sanchez (or whatever his name is now) had a better WAR than the 2.1 Machado had last year.

Sanchez did a Yolmer's job of handling the utility infield role...

I think a project like Jose Ruiz is just as deserving of a 40-man roster spot as, say, a Daniel Palka, Guillermo Quiroz, or Thyago Vieira.

(Pop Quiz: Which one of those latter three names are not on currently on the Sox' 40 man?  Point being - we gotta a lotta riff raff on there.)

Jerry Crasnick (espn.com) just tweeted:

The #Dodgers and #Whitesox are working on a trade. Stay tuned.

Interesting.  They gave up basically nothing - Jake "Black" Peter was left exposed in the Rule V, and no one took him -- and got back a couple of potential Trade Deadline Flips.   Yes, they took on some salary, but the Sox can afford it.

Soria was half decent for KC last year... does this mean he's our closer?

Jake "Black" Peter, I love it.
