Seems like a good Coop special to me. Try converting him to the bullpen. We need arms there, especially a LH.

White Sox assets Jose Abreu and Avisail Garcia could be up for bid at winter meetings

6:27pm: The Yankees and White Sox are also interested in Machado, ESPN’s Buster Olney reports (Twitter link).  As mentioned below, Peter Angelos doesn’t want to deal Machado to New York, while the Sox are an interesting suitor that could be looking at Machado as the centerpiece of a return to contention.

Agree, especially when the White Sox are still in re-build mode.  It would be a foolish trade for a one year rental unless you can steal him in a trade or have him agree to a contract extension before the trade.

Nick Burdi picked just before Sox pick - Smart move, he had TJ surgery so will be on DL most of the year followed by 30 day rehab assignment - only needs to be called up at end of year.

Sox could have picked Nestor Cortez.

Last yr sox picked a bum - this yr they bailed. What was point in getting down to 36 on the roster?

Sox should sign Putnam & Petricka to minor league deals, bet I fear they're to stupid to act on a no lose situation.

I would sign Putnam, not the other bum. Cannot stand him.

The rule 5 pickup that was sold to the Rangers was for cash. Bummer.

There's a lot to the Machado rumors that just do not make sense.    I'm not buying any of it.

There's no way any of our main prospects are on the table for 1 year of Machado. I'm not buying it either.

I don't think we'd be buying 1 year. There's nothing stopping us from offering a boatload of cash over 5-6 years. Who else are we going to be paying? Rodon? Abreu?

CF   Polo
2B   Moncada
3B   Machado
1B   Abreu
LF   Jimenez
DH  Davidson
RF   Garcia
C    Castillo
SS  Anderson

Rough lineup, assuming we don't trade Abreu or Garcia (I think we'll move Avi while value is up).

We have no big player contracts. Machado fits our window. I'd hate to give up Giolito or Kopech, but you don't get a Machado for pennies on the dollar. That's why we accumulated volume.

Yeah, but the Orioles aren't allowing teams to try to negotiate an extension with Machado apparently.
If we're going to commit to someone like Machado, why not just give up a 2019 draft pick to sign him later? Or do you think we'll get a "hometown" discount?

One of the many things that makes zero sense.   The O's would get a bigger "haul" if their trade partner knew they'd have Machado for more than a year.  Given the option, you want the bigger "haul".  If a schmoe like me knows this, certainly the brain trust of a major league team knows this.

Wouldn't we receive a comp pick after the first round if he signed elsewhere?

I'm of the belief we will be strong in 2nd half next season. KC and Tigers in toilet. Show Machado you're a year away (and the money). If he walks, get the pick and sign someone else.

Yes and no.  Compensation rules changed in the latest CBA reducing the value of a compensation pick.  Only teams that receive revenue sharing will now get a sandwich pick between rounds 1 and 2 for their loss of a free agent who rejected the qualify offer.

The White Sox do not receive revenue sharing so no round 1A pick for them.  Best they'd receive is a pick which would come after Competitive Balance Round B. Competitive Balance Round B comes after Round 2.  Last June the Competitive Balance Round B ended with overall pick #75.

So as an example, if Jake Arrieta signs with another team this off-season, the Cubs compensation in the June 2018 draft, would be approximately the 80th overall pick. If Arrieta was a free agent last off-season, losing Arrieta would have given them pick #31 in the June 2017 draft.

Even if the Orioles granted a 72-hr window to work out an extension, Machado has absolutely no reason not test free agency. He's going to get a MEGA contract from someone and it makes no sense for him not to see what's out there and play other teams against each other to keep raising the bidding. The Sox may offer a very, very big amount but there's no amount the Dodgers or Yankees couldn't top if they decide they really want him. And for as good as Machado is, there does get to be a point where the money he'll command is just not practical. Forget about Bryce Harper, too. That guy's a dbag.
