Shoeless:

A wee bit of smoke, I think.    Yanks have some catchers to spare.

Heh, the second Tanaka steps foot off the plane and feels the Chicago weather he'll have made up his mind.

Either way, it ain't happening for the Sox. Doubt it happens for the Cubs either. They're not going to pony up the money it'll take to sign him. I could be wrong but I'd be surprised if that happens.

•The White Sox have signed infielder/outfielder Eric Patterson to a minor league contract, tweets Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune. The 30-year-old began last season with the Atlantic League's York Revolution, batting .275/.342/.527 with 13 homers in 294 plate appearances. That production led to him getting picked up by the Brewers, but he slashed just .204/.291/.235 in 111 plate appearances at Double-A Huntsville. Patterson has not appeared in the Majors since 2011.

I never count the Sox out when they are seriously pursuing someone, especially when the $ is even.  I bet they have the money to sign him, history with SHINGO! and Tadahito, and a diverse front office. White guy, Jew, Negro, Cubans.  The Jap has to like that. Plus, Comisk is close to Chinatown.

....and JoeyC could probably be easily convinced to be his interpreter if he signs with the beloved.

Probably the only hold up to his signing would be convincing Reinsdorf to release Lillibridge's old uniform #18 out of semi-retirement for Tanaka.

If  they are pursuing him  that money should have been spent on Buehrle.

Diamondbacks claim Santos Rodriguez:

Should turn out to be no big loss.

The bigger question is who are they going to cut from the White Sox 40-man roster to make room for the signing of Masahiro Tanaka?

No way.  One of the White Sox better moves in the last three years was letting Buehrle walk. 4 years/$58 million was outrageous money to pay a 33-year old pitcher who had already pitched 2500 innings in the majors.

He's pretty much a mediocre pitcher that has an occasional brilliant start who is 25-23 over the last two seasons with an ERA of 4.  He doesn't strike out many hitters and plenty of those groundball outs he got for Toronto last year would have been hits and errors if he had the pathetic 2013 White Sox infield behind him.

The good points of Buehrle were he worked fast, he gave you 200+ IP a season, he didn't walk many hitters (but he did give up a heck of a lot of hits) and his teammates and the fans loved him. But it's been 8 seasons since I thought "Boy I'm glad Buehrle's on the bump tonight since this is a big game the White Sox need to win!"

I agree with Andy. I liked Buehrle but not for that amount of money. Even a hometown discount that he would have taken to stay with the Sox would probably still been too high a price for him.

Is it right to spend a stupid amount of money on a guy who has never pitched in MLB? Not sure if that's the right move either but if they can structure a deal to opt out after 3 or 4 years so his contract doesn't kill us 5 years down the road, then I'm all for it. Still don't think we outbid the Yankees or Dodgers, though, anyway.

Hmmm...

Kenny Williams:  “In the last 10 days I have been in Australia, the Dominican Republic and Los Angeles on White Sox business. There is nothing more important than the business taking place in the next few days.

“So I sent Frank a congratulatory message this morning via text and I imagine his phone has blown up with all the messages he has already been getting.

“If this business I’ve been on weren’t so important, there is no doubt in my mind I would have been there to give [Frank Thomas] a handshake and a hug.”

So what White Sox business is so important?

“There has been speculation over the last few days, but I like to keep things under the radar,” Williams said.

Come on Shoeless, it's a known fact that EVERY free-agent wants to play for the Cubs.  Especially since the arrival of the Theocracy and now they've introduced 'Clark' to sweeten the deal.  Their future is so bright that they're able to just pick & choose who they want and the other 29 teams will just have to fight over the table scraps. Hell yes. There's family history there, too. My old man worked for the Sox in their PR department for one night. It was Ichiro's first trip to the South Side when he first joined the M's.

It also happened to be the night that Mike Cameron went crazy on us.

Just heard this mentioned on the local sports yakker:

During Tuesday's 8-3 win over Florida State at George Steinbrenner Field, scouts from the Chicago White Sox were in attendance and are interested in some of the Yankees catching and could look to acquire one of Austin Romine, Francisco Cervelli or J.R. Murphy. King said that Gordon Beckham could interest the Yankees in a trade.

Time to move Beckham. Can always pull out Johnson, and if Johnson finds it too hard, shoot Semien out there

Shoeless gets a star for that post.

I think it's brown.
