Paul Konerko has been placed on waivers, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter).  The White Sox slugger can say no to any deal thanks to his ten-and-five rights and is likely to clear waivers.

The 37-year-old is owed roughly $3.25MM for the remainder of the season.  Konerko owns a slash line of .243/.306/.359 with nine homers in 87 games this season, a significant dropoff from his usual production.

It's possible that this will be Konerko's final go-round as he is on an expiring contract, dealing with back issues, and has stated that he doesn't want to stay in the game "just to chase some numbers."

The White Sox have released Tyler Greene from Triple-A Charlotte, according to Knights director of PR and media relations Tommy Viola (Twitter link).

Greene, who turns 30 on Saturday, spent 22 games with the Sox earlier this season, batting .222/.263/.352 with one homer. He appeared exclusively at second base for the White Sox, though he has significant big league experience at shortstop and has also tallied 101 Major League innings at third base. He had a .649 OPS with the Knights this season prior to his release.

Greene was released by the Astros this Spring, a mildly surprising move given the power he showed in Houston last season. After being acquired from the Cardinals on Aug. 9, Greene hit .246/.278/.460 with seven homers over 39 games for the Astros. The former first-round pick is a lifetime .224/.289/.356 hitter in parts of five big league seasons with the Cardinals, Astros and White Sox.

I think that is the move I was looking for. Just seemed odd they would add Manzella and not have a corresponding move to make room for him.

Manzella came aboard when they put Sanchez on DL. Greene got cut and they activated Gallagher, the OF.

Really hope the Sox go "all in" to sign that Cuban defector, Jose Abreu. They have certainly saved enough money to be able to throw a ton at the guy and still not kill the payroll.

That's a move I could get excited about.

So far, Hahn rhymes with yawn.

Hahn breaks down process behind Peavy deal
White Sox GM talks details of three-team trade that netted Garcia from Tigers

By Scott Merkin / MLB.com | 10/16/2013 1:49 P.M. ET

CHICAGO -- In regard to the July 30 trade involving Jake Peavy, the Tigers and the Red Sox, White Sox general manager Rick Hahn has an ideal theory as to how that complicated maneuver eventually plays out.

"Hopefully five years from now, we look back and say there are plenty of rings to go around," Hahn said.

Hahn might be stretching the truth with that statement.

Clearly, he would like to have five White Sox World Series titles five years from now. But the underlying intention of his statement was illustrating a move that worked well for all sides involved.

During a recent interview with MLB.com, Hahn spoke of the process to execute a deal that sent the right-hander to Boston, shortstop Jose Iglesias to the Tigers and outfielder Avisail Garcia, along with three Minor Leaguers, to the White Sox. Hahn provided insight into the intricacies needed in making the first major step of the White Sox reshaping process a reality.

The prelude

Peavy allowed six runs on seven hits over 2 1/3 innings during a start at Safeco Field on June 4 and clearly didn't have close to his best stuff. That start followed a four-inning loss at Wrigley Field on May 30, where Peavy yielded a grand slam to opposing pitcher Travis Wood. A major part of the reason for Peavy's struggles was a fractured rib on his left side that kept him out of big league action until July 20.

During that extended absence, it became clear the 2013 White Sox would be sellers. A handful of clubs contacted the White Sox even before Peavy began throwing off the mound, just checking in, expressing interest and wanting to get a sense of timing.

Medical records were shared fairly early on with a handful of teams that were a little more aggressive and seemed to be a little more interested, as well as possessing a possible fit from the White Sox side, according to Hahn.

"We probably heard from about eight to 10 teams with interest, and from the medical standpoint, we got down to about three," Hahn said. "We knew he was only going to have a couple of starts before the deadline. So we wanted to try to get teams to understand the nature of the freak injury and why it wasn't arm related so they could put it behind them and judge what they saw with their eyes.

"By the time he made his first start," Hahn continued, "every team that was interested was basically in the same spot in saying, 'We have interest in the guy, but we are a little bit in a wait-and-see mode.'"

His return came via a strong six-inning effort against the Braves, followed up by a seven-inning victory against Detroit at home on July 25. To Hahn's surprise, the White Sox heard from a couple of teams for the first time about Peavy after that second start.

"They were at a little bit of a disadvantage in terms of other teams had put in the leg work and were a little more aggressive," Hahn said.

lsounds like the White Sox have found a long term replacement for Paulie:

White Sox to sign Cuba's Jose Abreu

Updated Oct 17, 2013 10:16 PM ET

The Chicago White Sox are finalizing an agreement with Cuban defector Jose Abreu on a six-year, $68 million contract, FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports.

The deal for Abreu would be the largest first-time contract for an international player in major-league history, Rosenthal reports.

The Astros, Red Sox and White Sox recently had emerged as frontrunners to sign the 26-year-old first baseman, who hit .360 (9-for-25) with three home runs and nine RBI in this year's World Baseball Classic.

Abreu would join the Dodgers' Yasiel Puig and Oakland's Yoenis Cespedes as recent Cuban stars to defect and join the major leagues. Considered a prized international prospect, Abreu was named the Cuban MVP in 2010-11 when he hit .453 with 33 home runs and 93 RBI in just 66 games.

According to MLB.com, Abreu defected from Cuba in August and established residency in Haiti last month, and soon after was declared an MLB free agent.

One talent evaluator said Abreu could step into a big league lineup tomorrow and hit .260 with 25 home runs. That's not far from what Cespedes is doing in Oakland this season. Another expressed concern that Abreu looks "confused" against breaking balls and thought he could benefit from a little seasoning in the upper minors. Once Abreu gets the hang of major league pitching, the consensus is that he has the strength to hit 30 homers by accident.

"If you throw him 90-92 [mph] inside, he gets beat a lot," said a scout for a National League club. "I don't think he's going to hit a good hard fastball in. But there's a lot of marginal pitching out there. The No. 1 and 2 starters are going to get him out, but he's going to feast on the 3, 4 and 5 guys. That's where he's going to make his money.

"His swing is thick and sort of stiff. His front arm gets kind of rigid, and it's more a strength swing than a real quick bat. But he's a smart hitter, and he's not just up there swinging out of his butt. He's crafty. I think he'll make the adjustments."

and then there's this:

Abreu is a below-average runner and a base clogger.

which makes him the appropriate replacement for Konerko.

Nice pickup. We cannot keep both Dunn and Kong besides this guy. Guessing Pauly is going to have to go.

They both need to go.

Saw on the local CSN sports show yesterday that supposedly the Sox are going to go after Brian McCann.   As much as I'd hate for them to overpay for a .260 hitter, he does fill two needs (catcher, lefty bat).

Agree as well to lose both, but why isn't anyone posting the obvious question, we need a veteran lefty hitting catcher to help develop Josh. Why not bring AJ back on a 2 year deal?

Saltalamacchia is indeed an FA, I believe.   He could be a good option, especially with McCann (supposedly) asking for $100 million.

Thanks Blackie, I did not want to try to spell it.
