This is the first year I can remember being excited about being sellers at the deadline. Let's see what Hahn can do.

I like rebuilding years, lets hope Hahn does as good a job as Larry Hines did.

Not so fast, although maybe Hahn is just playing it coy. Sure hope that's the case:

He better be playing coy, I agree with that. This team is dead, there are 3 players I would keep for sure: Sale, Reed and Beckham. Anyone else can go.

Rios' deal actually looks palatable now. Standard ask is two top prospects for a guy like that. Can't give him away like we did Swisher.

Reds are probably best match for us. Mets desperately need OF but can't see them being buyers on Rios.

He's definitely playing it coy. I cannot imagine any scenario in which he thinks the Sox have a chance this year and should add payroll. Not happening.

We don't need a full rebuild and we can't afford one that takes 5 years so hopefully in 2 or 3 years -- at most -- we're competitive again.

I think we need a full rebuild, I might keep a couple other younger pitchers like Quintana and Santiago besides Reed and Sale, but that is about it. Who besides Beckham? Gillaspie is serviceable but is he a corner infielder? I have tired of Ramirez. No one else worth keeping who is not a commodity for a trade.

He just seems to be a guy who could end up being a dependable lefty starter. Reminds me at times of a young Buehrle, and at times of an oldie named Juan Pizarro.

Agree with msf.  I'd wait on Gillaspie unless he's packaged in a good deal, the kid looks like he has a clue.  Ramirez is one of those on-the-fence players, same for Quintana.  Sentimental verdict is to keep Konerko around, he's a leader and a lifetime Sox guy with a lot of cred in the bank.  Danks may eventually return to form next year, but it still peeves me that they allocated $ to him that should have been used to keep Buehrle.

The rest of the roster is uber-expendable.

I wonder if there's any trade market at all for Dunn. Despite the horrific avg and strikeouts, he does have 20 HR's before the All Star break already. Is there an AL contender who might put up with everything else to get those home runs? Even if we have to pay a ton of his salary it would be worth it from our end, I'd think.

There is no market for Dunn, outside of someone else's bad contract.

At this point, if you have an adequate replacement player, you'd just release him.
I'd certainly have no complaints with doing just that and calling up Andy Wilkins or Dan Brown.

Black....Brown...just make him a White (Sox) at Dunn's expense.

Agreed. I also agree we cannot get anything for Dunn, so just release him, please

I totally disagree with just releasing Dunn, when the guy we replace him with will hit for the same average with no home runs.

Dunn has had a better year than Kong when you look at all offensive records

We don't know what his replacement will do. We know what Dunn will do. The objective is to use the playing time to find out if Black or Wilkins can be contributors. I would rather pay 14 mil to answer that question than pay 14 mil for a .200 avg and a slew of HRs from a guy that can't play defense.

I don't see how we get from a .290 average and .860 OPS to "will hit for same average as Dunn with no HRs".

It could happen, but the numbers at AA suggest those guys have some pop and make considerably more contact than Dunn.

Again, the 2013 team is a loss.

Why unnecessarily stunt prospects' development for the sake of dumping an underperforming player? Let the kids develop, and don't let the mess that's going on up here affect what's right for the kids.

Side note - Dunn's AAA stats (55 games in 2001): .329 BA, .441 OBP, .676 SLG. 51 K in 254 PA.
Dunn's AA stats (39 games in 2001): .343 BA, .449 OBP, .664 SLG, 31K in 168 PA.

His combined AA / AAA stats in '01 (94 games in 2001): .334 BA, .444 OBP, .671 SLG, 82 K in 422 PA.

So we went from a .334 BA and 1.116 OPS to "will hit for the same average as Dunn" with homers.... so I can see how you can get from a .290 average and .860 OPS to "will hit for same average as Dunn with no HRs." Probably unlikely, but why risk it?

Let the 2013 team rot. If you can dump guys to shed salary, replace them with AAAA fodder. Let the prospects' development dictate when they come up to the big leagues if it's a lost season... not the needs of a trainwreck of a team.
