Cool.  Consider it a rumor I got from my sources (i.e., me).

cripes, they already have LaPorta resigned for 1B, they have Mikey Morse looking for a position (maybe LF?). Wish we had a spot at DH for Mikey Morse. Of course that would mean one more RH in the lineup.

Nah, he was on them at that time, that was after he had been suspended in the minors.

The White Sox claimed Zach Stewart off of waivers, MLBTR has learned. The Pirates had designated Stewart for assignment one week ago to create 40-man roster space for Jeff Karstens.

This marks the second time in two years that the White Sox have acquired Stewart. They traded for him and Jason Frasor in July of 2012, sending Edwin Jackson and Mark Teahen to Toronto. Stewart posted an 8.58 ERA with 4.8 K/9 and 1.0 BB/9 in 35 2/3 innings for the White Sox and Red Sox this past season. The Red Sox traded him to Pittsburgh in November, but he never threw a pitch for the Pirates.

White Sox land Gillaspie in trade with Giants
Right-hander Soptic sent to San Francisco; Anderson designated for assignment

By Scott Merkin / MLB.com | 2/22/2013 1:35 P.M. ET

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The White Sox added a left-handed hitter and a third baseman on Friday morning in acquiring Conor Gillaspie from the Giants in exchange for Minor League right-hander Jeff Soptic.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Gillaspie, who is out of options, the White Sox designated infielder Lars Anderson for assignment.

"He conceivably fits in nicely on the roster, which we'll obviously decide more about toward the end of next month," said White Sox general manager Rick Hahn of Gillaspie. "But we see him having a solid hit tool, above-average awareness of the strike zone, solid defensively. He gives us a little versatility in his ability to play third base as well as first. He gives [manager] Robin [Ventura] some options potentially."

Gillaspie, 25, spent the majority of the 2012 season with Triple-A Fresno, hitting .281 with 14 home runs and 49 RBIs in 108 games. The 6-foot-1, 205-pounder appeared in six games with the Giants last season, going 3-for-20 with two RBIs.

Selected by the Giants with a sandwich pick (37th overall) in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of Wichita State University, Gillaspie made his Major League debut on Sept. 6 that year. He became the first member of the 2008 Draft class to reach the Major Leagues and was the quickest player in Giants history to do so, surpassing pitcher Jeff Robinson's mark of 306 days.

MLB.com, which ranked Gillaspie 13th in its list of the Giants' Top 20 prospects, had the following to say of his ability.

"He's a decent hitter, quick through the strike zone, who has a pretty good approach at the plate," read the analysis of Gillaspie, who is a career .287 hitter with 37 homers, 259 RBIs and a .358 on-base percentage in 514 games over five Minor League seasons. He also has 44 big league at-bats in 29 games played over the 2008, 2011 and 2012 seasons.

I like this Gillaspie kid a lot, and to get him just for Soptic, wow. Soptic probably has the best Fastball in the org, but no idea where it is going yet, Giants got a good arm.

Just my 2 cents worth but I wasnt impressed with the trade. My opinion begins with the question as to why Gillaspie couldnt make it in the BL? Why werent his numbers better? Was competition so good at 3B that Gillaspie couldnt stick? Something doesnt add up. Hey! He might turn out very well. For an A ball pitcher the investment may be good. Its too early to say at this point. Right now I just dont see some potential starter we got for nothing.

They have Pablo Sandoval at 3B, and he ain't moving.

Gillespie has never really gotten a shot at the bigs (48 plate appearances) - that's fewer plate appearances than NL starting pitchers normally get in a year.

Gillespie isn't a big enough of a prospect to move Sandoval for, but he's worth a shot for sure.

He will at the least make a good lefty platoon for Keppinger.

Exactly, not like this guy got any chance. Went to ML in first season out of college, that is impressive, from a great baseball school of Wichita State, so he knows how to play. Good D, a LH bat, and a fabulous K to BB ratio, one of best I have seen from a minor leaguer. Also started to show power in his last two years, no longer just a singles guy. He has a nice chance. Put Keppinger at 2B and play Gillaspie at 3B against tough RHs, to relieve Beckham of that task.

Mock Draft has the White Sox picking Hunter Harvey (HS RHP out of North Carolina), son of former MLB reliever Bryan Harvey with their 1st pick:
