I think we actually could have a shot at it next year.  A few tweaks...

Everyone is so freaking negative about our chances, not sure why we should

If our pitching gets more consistent, which it just might, I like our chances. Viciedo and De Aza need to take next step and be more consistent, moreso Viciedo than De Aza. Rios needs to stay consistent. I am ok with Keppinger instead of Youkilis. Ramirez and Beckham need to add a tad more, both had nice RBI totals for bottom of lineup guys however. Kong should improve, he needs to do better in the run production area. Dunn should be more like last year than the year before. Flowers needs to at least drive in some runs and play good D. He is might likeliest to come not thru.

So if our pitching comes thru, I like our chances very much.

Well, there are a lot of "so and so needs to .... " in your post, which scares me. Would feel a little better if we were able to acquire another reliable bat.

Rule, I know there are a lot more if's and but's than Detroit has, but if the stars align, we have enough talent. That is how baseball is sometimes.

I certainly agree with you there, msf. Last year is a good example of how things don't always play out the way they "should". Detroit did not play to their capabilities and it's possible they don't this season either. It's possible one or two of their stars have massive down years or get injured and a couple of guys on our team have insanely good years.

You just never know. If our pitching holds up that should at least keep us in the race.

Yep, all we can ask for is a chance, and I think this team has the capability of competing. Not like we are horrible.

I can see the Sox having a season much like last year.  Some success and and a lot of hope to start the year, then an inevitable fade and a slide in August-September.  Just enough winning early on to suck us in, getting our interest and hopes up, and then the crushing agony of repeated defeats after the All-Star break to seal our doom.

That's the Kenny Williams Rick Hahn way.

I just hope we beat the teams we're supposed to beat.  Hate it when we look competitive and then lose to your Kansas City types.

As crushing as the end of last year was (and believe me, that sick feeling stuck with me a long time), I would still rather have a team that keeps us interested most of the year than one that is out of it by the end of May. I can't even watch the games if I know they're meaningless.

Of course, the ideal scenario is the team keeps us interested all year and then actually makes the playoffs...don't get me wrong....but I have no desire to watch a team lose 90 games (whether by design or not).

Hopefully after this year when a couple big contracts come off the books, Hahn will be able to put a better team together.

Detroit pretty much still has the same sucky chemistry as they did last year.  While it may be undefineable  -- some teams just click, and some teams repel.  It is what it is.

I don't know which kind of team is worse from a fan's standpoint.   The first variety is heartbreaking, whereas the second type is depressing.

I suggest all of you who failed to bookmark JoeyC's backup board at proboards, do so now so you'll know where to go when C-A-F craps out next time.

minor request... could we perhaps limit the size of the opening banner.... it takes up a lot of real estate on smaller devices...
