Yes.  Not sure how we let that happen.

Item #2 on this list will make most here happy.  However I wouldn't be surprised if he's re-signed later to a contract at about $7 million for 2019.  The injury to Kopech and the failure of many starting pitcher prospects (Fulmer, Hanson, etc.) to make the next jump in their development may force the White Sox to do it.

Question on Kopech.

Had he not been injured, he would have been on the opening roster in 2019 and we would have had him for 2019 through 2024. When he comes back in 2020, can we delay his comeback until late April and then have him under control through 2025 and still have him for 6 years?

Because Kopech got hurt while on the ML roster the whole time he's out will count as ML service time. So if he's out all of 2019 that's 1 yr of ML service time the Sox lose on him.

Read that 40 roster article. I'd put on the 40 all 6 of those guy listed as a high risk of being taken in the Rule 5 - Cordell is the obvious guy to take off the current roster.

Thanks Bill, but that wasn't quite my question, I knew 2019 would count as service time. My question was that if he was still healthy now, and we kept him down next year (2019) and brought him up in May of 2019 would he have had 6 years starting with 2020?

If so, now that he isn't healthy and we lost a year of service time, can we basically get it back by not bringing him back in 2020 until May of 2020, so the year 2020 won't count as a full year? If so then we could still have 5 years after 2020 and onluy lose April of 2020.

Yes.  As soon as Kopech recovers from the surgery and is healthy, they can activate him and then reassign him to the minors to try to delay his free agency date.  He was credited with 41 days of service time for 2018.  So he needs 50+ days of minor league  non-rehab assignment in the next few years to delay his potential free agency by a year. IIRC, this must be done before a player accumulates 3 full years of MLB service time as a player with 3 years of service time cannot be optioned to the minors without his permission. That's in the current MLB CBA which expires after the 2021 season.

I do appreciate all these things that you know or know how to look up Andy. I have a hard time keeping up on some of them. Good question however by Juan too.

I count 38 on the 40 roster. Manny Banuelos & Ryan Cordell have no business being on the 40.

Sox cut Kevan Smith & didn't protect Thompson or Adams so they could protect bums like Banuelos & Cordell AND keep 2 empty spots open for the rule 5 draft?

Sox need a new GM.

Source = mostly hearsay and conjecture.  Heard someone on the radio mention it, someone else said they saw a tweet, etc.

Just makes me wonder if Sox Brass crunched the numbers regarding the new TV deal, and figured whatever they pay those two guys, their appeal and impact on Sox interest will increase the TV dollars enough to make it worth it.   The timing is just so interesting... wonder if Sox Brass were thinking about this three years ago when Jerry agreed to do the rebuild... save a ton of money for a few years and then set yourself up to maximize the new TV deal (knowing that the Cubs were going to bail) by spending silly amounts of money on superstars (and being in a position to do so).

Makes tons of sense. They could sign both and still have room. I prefer Machado if he comes to play

Do you sense a disturbance in the space-time continuum?
