The Expos name Frank Robinson as manager, Tony Tavares as president of the club with Omar Minaya becoming the major leagues' first Hispanic general manager, and south of the border former Expo manger Jeff Torborg will manage the Marlins with former Expos' interim general manager Larry Beinfest as the GM and David Samson will take over the duties of team president.

2003 - Federal Judge James Holderman has given the Cubs and the owners of rooftop bleachers which provide fans a view of Wrigley Field a year to settle their dispute. The team believes the seating provided above the field via rooftops directly compete with the club for ticket sales revenue and the surrounding neighbors, in turn, have not been sympathetic to team's expansion plans.

The 1993 samples were collected by MLB in an effort to gauge the prevalence of steroid use with players and owners agreeing the results would be confidential.

2007 - After a year of negotiations, an agreement is reached on the sale of the Braves from Time Warner to Liberty Media. Seventy percent the owners must approve the deal which includes the retention of general manager John Schuerholz and manager Bobby Cox.

1974 - Cool Papa Bell is named to the Hall of Fame by the Special Committee on the Negro Leagues. Bell started in the Negro Leagues as a pitcher, but was moved to center field to take advantage of his blinding speed. He helped the St. Louis Stars and Homestead Grays win three titles apiece.

1887 -  For a record price of $10,000, the Cubs, then known as the White Stockings, sell future current NL batting champ and future Hall of Famer Mike Kelly to the Beaneaters. The popular box office draw, who will earn his nickname King while playing in Boston, will continue to be productive hitting .311 for a three-year span during his first tenure with the team.

1928 - The American Legion baseball program, on the brink of bankruptcy, receives a pledge of $50,000 from Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis and the MLB Advisory Council to continue its development a national championship program for teenagers. With the much-needed funding, Legion Baseball will continue in 1928, and the following season, teams from every state and the District of Columbia will participate in the youth tournament.

1934 - After playing 19 years with the Senators, Sam Rice ends his career playing one season with the Indians. He will amass 2,987 career hits in his two decades as a player.

1945 - After forty-five years in professional baseball, Braves president Bob Quinn retires as the team's general manager. John, his son, will take his place.

1957 - Ten years after the integration of major league baseball, the Georgia Senate unanimously approves a bill which prohibits blacks from playing baseball with whites except at religious gatherings. Less than a decade later, the Braves will move its franchise from Milwaukee to Atlanta, the state's capital.

1959 - The Orioles buy 32-year old veteran Whitey Lockman from the Giants. The ‘Birds’ will trade the first baseman to the Reds in June for Walt Dropo, who also plays first base.

1976 - The Braves send Valentine's Day cards to their season-ticket holders and the media. The Braves finished in fifth place in 1975, 40½ games behind Cincinnati. Atlanta will finish the 1976 season in last place, 32 games behind the Reds, but they are first in rhyming. Their card reads: Rose is a Red Morgan's one, too. They finished first, Like we wanted to. But last year's behind us; We're happy to say. Now we're tied for first, Happy Valentine's Day.

1996 - Kevin McClatchy and his group of investors purchase the Pirates from the Pittsburgh Associates. The deal includes the condition of having to build a baseball-only ballpark in Pittsburgh within five years.

2001 - The Ford C. Frick Award, named in memory of the former baseball commissioner who was a broadcaster, will be given to Marlins' radio announcer Rafael Ramirez during Hall of Fame induction ceremonies this summer. 'Felo', who began his 56-year career broadcasting games in Cuba, has been in the Miami broadcast booth since the team's inaugural season in 1993.

2001 - According to the Detroit Free Press major league baseball is informing umpires to remove pitchers from the game, without warning, who deliberately throw a beanball at a batter's head. The crackdown, according to officials, is a clarification and reinforcement of an existing rule.

2002 - The Tigers sign Dmitri Young (.302, 21, 69) to a four-year contract with two team options. The Tigers traded outfielder Juan Encarnacion (.242, 12, 52) and minor league right hander Luis Pineda in December to acquire the first baseman/outfielder from the Reds.

2003 - After much speculation, the Chunichi Dragons return Kevin Millar to the Marlins for an undisclosed amount of money for relinquishing its rights.     2007 - For first time at Wrigley Field, the Cubs will allow ads on the green doors which are located in the ivy in the left- and right-field bleachers according to Jay Blunk, director of marketing and sales. Although the team has been approached by other companies, Under Armour, whose company spokesman is newly acquired outfielder Alfonso Soriano, is the "right fit" for the 7-by-12 foot signage featuring the performance apparel’s signature logo.

2009 - The Angels and Bobby Abreu (.296, 20, 100) agree to a $5 million, one-year deal. The 34-year-old free-agent outfielder, taking a significant pay cut after having a solid season with the Yankees last season, is expected to add some much-needed punch from the left side for the AL West champions.

2011 - The Yankees come to terms with free-agent Andruw Jones on a $1.5 million, one-year contract, eliminating the likelihood of the team resigning Johnny Damon.     2011 - Avoiding arbitration, Carlos Marmol agrees to a three-year, $20 million deal with the Cubs. The 28-year-old closer saved 38 games in 43 opportunities last season along with compiling a 2-3 record and an ERA of 2.55.

After the season, Atlanta will trade their 2007 first-round pick (14th overall) along with right-handed reliever Jordan Walden to the Cardinals for right-handers Tyrell Jenkins and Shelby Miller.

2014 - Freddie Freeman agrees to a franchise-record eight-year, $135 million contract, surpassing the six-year, $90 million deal the Braves gave Chipper Jones in 2000. The 24 year-old All-Star first baseman, who finished fifth in the MVP balloting this season, has hit .285 during his four years with the team, annually averaging 17 home runs and 70 RBIs.

2018 - The Chicago White Sox signed Hector Santiago as a free agent.

On February 15 in Baseball History...

1916 - The Yankees buy Frank Home Run Baker from the Athletics for $37,500. He had sat out the 1915 season.

1931 - The spring training site of the Yankees in St. Petersburg is renamed Miller Huggins Field in honor of the team's late manager.

1934 - Radio broadcast rights are granted to Boston, Chicago, Detroit and Cincinnati.

1946 - The Phillies hire the first female major league scout when the sign Edith Houghton, who will ink fifteen players, mostly from Philadelphia high schools, to contracts. The North Philadelphia native will continue to scour the Philly area for local talent until 1952, before returning to the Navy to serve her country during the Korean and Vietnam wars.

1946 - Three days before he will marry New York department store heiress Coral Gimbel, Hank Greenberg comes to terms with the Tiger, signing a contract for $60,000. The following season, after leading the American League in home runs (44) and RBIs (127), the slugging first baseman threatens to retire rather than take a pay cut, which prompts Detroit to trade the future Hall of Famer to the Pirates.

1956 - The Pirates and the Kansas City A's cancel an exhibition game in Birmingham, Alabama, because of a local ordinance barring black players from playing against white players.

1964 - Cubs second baseman Ken Hubbs, twenty-two, is found dead in his private plane which crashed on February 13, 1964, near Provo, Utah, while en route to Colton, California. As a rookie in 1962, Hubbs had played in 78 consecutive games without making an error.

1973 - In a national poll, Phillies' southpaw Steve Carlton beats out golf legend Jack Nicklaus to win the $15,000 diamond-studded gold buckled Hickok Belt, an award given to the top "Professional Athlete of the Year". Last season's National League Cy Young Award winner joins an elite list of a previous recipients that include Willie Mays, Sandy Koufax, Jim Brown, Rocky Marciano, and Arnold Palmer.

1990 - A thirty-two day lockout begins as major league owners refuse to open spring training camp without reaching a new Basic Agreement with the players. The season will be delayed one week due to the lock-out.

2001 - After turning down the Mets offer of salary arbitration that at the very least would have been worth $2 to $3 million, Bobby Jones signs a one-year free agent deal with the Padres for only $625,000. The 31-year old right-hander, 11-6 last year with New York, will lose 19 games for the Padres this season.

2003 - After the Dragons released him for an undisclosed payment, the Red Sox acquire Kevin Millar (.306, 16, 57) from the Marlins. The 31-year-old first baseman-outfielder, who had originally agreed to a two-year, $6.2 million deal to play in Japan, had a change of heart after at first rejecting Boston's waiver claim for him made in January .

2006 - According to Adam Katz, Sammy Sosa's agent, the 37-year old slugger will probably retire eleven homers shy of becoming the fifth major leaguer to hit 600 round-trippers. Earlier, the Dominican outfielder rejected a non-guaranteed contract from the Nationals that included performance bonuses.

2006 - Former Dodgers starter, Jeff Weaver (14-11, 4.22) agrees to a one-year contract with the other team with Los Angeles in its name. The deal for the last major player left on the free agent market is worth $8,325,000, and the 29-year old right-hander can earn an additional $600,000 in performance bonuses for innings pitched and game starts with the Angels.

2007 - Ending more than two months of speculation about Barry Bonds’ deal with the Giants, the commissioner office's approves the one-year contract worth $15.8 million. The 42-year-old slugger had reached a preliminary agreement with the team early in December, but finalizing the contract was delayed when language about promotional appearances and a clause was added stating the Giants could void the deal if the outfielder was indicted due to the use of steroids.

2007 - The Yankees announce the team will wear black armbands on the left sleeve of their uniforms in memory of teammate Cory Lidle. The 34-year old right-hander, along with flight instructor Tyler Stanger, died when their plane crashed into a 52-story high-rise apartment building in Manhattan on a rain-swept afternoon last October.

2008 - The Seattle Mariners signed Greg Norton as a free agent.

2009 - The Cleveland Indians signed Tony Graffanino as a free agent.

2011 - Stan Musial receives the Presidential Medal of Freedom, an award in which the honorees are selected by the sitting president, from Barack Obama. The Cardinals' legend, who benefitted from local grass-root efforts on his behalf, joins major leaguers Hank Aaron, Moe Berg, Jackie Robinson, Roberto Clemente and Ted Williams, as a recipient of the most prestigious honor given to a United States civilian.

2012 - The Rays and Joe Maddon agree on a three-year contract extension that will keep the two-time American League manager of the year with Tampa through the 2015 season. During his six-year tenure with the club, the 58-year old skipper has compiled a 495-477 (.509) record leading the team to the postseason three times in the last four years, including an American League pennant in 2008.

2014 - The Chicago Cubs signed Emilio Bonifacio as a free agent.

2014 - The San Francisco Giants signed Mark Teahen as a free agent.

2016 -  "Baseball is known as our national pastime, but the game has deep roots and a rich history here in New York State. From the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in storied Cooperstown to the Mets and Yankees — the pinnacles of Major League Baseball, to our recently crowned Little League World Series champions from Maine-Endwell, New York State is clearly the epicenter of baseball greatness. It is time that we formally recognize baseball as our official state sport." - JAMES SEWARD, New York state senator.

New York State Sen. James Seward (R-Milford), thanks to a suggestion from a group of fourth-graders at Cooperstown Elementary School, announces he has introduced legislation (S.4288) to designate baseball as New York’s official state sport. In a press release, Hall of Fame president Jeff Idelson says he "enthusiastically supports” the proposed bill, citing Cooperstown serves as the spiritual home of baseball.

On February 16 in Baseball History...

1924 - Boston Braves' third baseman Tony Boeckel becomes the first major leaguer to be killed in an automobile accident when he dies from injuries received as a passenger yesterday in San Diego. Yankee outfielder Bob Meusel, also a passenger of the car driven by L.A. theater man Bob Albright, escapes without any serious injuries.

1950 - The BBWAA doesn't select any players for the Hall of Fame this season with former Giants Mel Ott (69%) and Bill Terry (63%) being the top vote getters, but falling short on being named on 75% of the writers' ballots that is required for induction. 'Master Mel' will get the nod next season, and 'Memphis Bill' will be enshrined in 1954.

1952 - After 39 years in the major leagues, 21 as a player with the Colonels and Pirates and 18 years as coach with Pittsburgh, Hall of Fame shortstop Honus Wagner retires. The 'Flying Dutchman' won eight batting titles, the most in National League history until tied by Tony Gwynn in 1997, and he also led the league in stolen bases for five seasons.

1953 - Brooklyn, Cincinnati, Milwaukee, and Philadelphia participate in a four-way trade that sends five players to new clubs. Joe Adc0ck (Reds) and Jim Pendleton (Dodgers) will now play for the Braves, Earl Torgeson (Braves) goes to the Phillies, Rocky Bridges (Dodgers) is now a Red, with Russ Meyer (Phillies) joining the Dodgers.

1967 - Red Ruffing, as a result of getting the most votes in a run-off election, is selected to be in the the Hall of Fame. The writers, who did not did not initially elect anyone, give the nod to the former Yankee pitcher, author of 273 major league wins, as the top vote-getter on the second ballot that listed the 20 players with the highest percentage.

1989 - Orel Hershiser becomes baseball's first three-million dollar man when he signs a three-year $7.9 million contract with the Dodgers. The 'Bulldog' will earn $3,166,167 in 1991.

1996 - General Mills announces a special edition of a Wheaties cereal box honoring the 75th Commemorative Year of the Negro Leagues that will feature superstars Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson and 'Cool Papa' Bell. In 1934, Yankee first baseman Lou Gehrig became the first athlete depicted on a box of the Breakfast of Champions.

2001 - Yankee premier reliever, Mariano Rivera (7-4, 2.85, 36 saves) signs a four-year approximately $40 million contract with the Bronx Bombers. The 31-year old Panama native surpassed Dennis Eckersley's major league record with 16 saves in post-season games.

2003 - Although banned by major league baseball for a Cooperstown induction, Pete Rose becomes a member of the Ted Williams Hitters Hall of Fame. 'Charlie Hustle' joins 1998 inductee Shoeless Joe Jackson, who is also banned from becoming a member of the Hall of Fame.

2004 - After leaving the team in 2007 to join Texas as a free agent, Doug Glanville returns to Philadelphia when he signs a one-year contract with the team. The 31-year old outfielder, who will retire at the end of the season after compiling a lifetime batting average of .277 during his nine-year tenure in the major leagues, leaves with a 293-game errorless streak intact.

2004 - The Rangers trade Alex Rodriguez along with cash to the Yankees in exchange for Alfonso Soriano and a player to be named later, Joaquin Arias. The deal comes on the heels of the Red Sox's inability to land the AL MVP in a swap with Texas for Manny Ramirez due to the players' association's objection because of the need to restructure A-Rod's existing contract as a result of the tentative transaction.

2007 - Baseball’s Playing Rules Committee approves several changes making it the first time since 1996 that the rules of the game have been altered. A ten game suspension for a player who scuffs a baseball, elimination of tie games which must be halted (after the fifth inning) due to weather by resuming the game before the next scheduled start at the same ballpark, players may no longer go into a dugout to make a catch, and allowing pitchers to wear undistracting multicolored gloves are among new rules which will start this season.

2011 - The Toronto Blue Jays signed Scott Podsednik as a free agent.

2011 - Rickie Weeks and the Brewers come to terms on a $38.5 million, four-year deal that includes a 2015 option based on plate appearances which could increase the total value of the contract to $50 million. The 28 year-old second baseman broke a franchise record last season with 754 trips to the plate, mostly as the team's leadoff hitter.

2011 - Speaking to reporters at the Phillies' spring training complex, a tearful Dallas Green, former big league manager and senior adviser to general manager Ruben Amaro, Jr., thanks everyone for their support after the shooting death of his granddaughter. Nine-year old Christina Taylor Green was one of six victims killed five weeks ago in a shooting rampage outside of a Tucson supermarket.

2013 - After an appearance at a local winter festival, Guido’s costume, worn by one of the Brewers’ racing sausages, goes missing. A seven-foot Italian sausage impersonator will be seen later in the night frequenting bars in Milwaukee, signing autographs.

2017 - The Toronto Blue Jays signed Mat Latos as a free agent.

2017 - The New York Yankees signed Chris Carter as a free agent.

On February 17 in Baseball History...

1891 - The American Association withdraws from the National Agreement thus starting a war with the National League. The AA moves its Chicago team to Cincinnati to compete with the NL team.

1900 - In lieu of unpaid alimony, Mary H. VonDerbeck becomes the owner of the American League franchise in Detroit. Her ex-husband will later regain control of the team.

1937 - Babe Dahlgren is bought by the Yankees from the Red Sox. The California native will become the player who replaces Lou Gehrig.

1943 - Without notifying the team, Joe DiMaggio enlists in the United States Army Air Forces and will not play for the Yankees again until 1946. Although the Bronx Bomber outfielder asked for no special treatment, he will spend most of his time out of harm's way playing baseball in America.

1964 - Former White Sox shortstop Luke Appling is voted into the Hall of Fame in the runoff election. Appling won two batting titles and played 2,422 games in twenty years with the White Sox. 'Old Aches and Pains' holds the single-season highest average for his position hitting .388 in 1936.

1965 - Commissioner Ford Frick suspends U.S. - Japan baseball relations until the dispute over Japanese San Francisco pitcher Masanori Murakami's contract with the Giants is resolved.

1976 - Future National League Cy Young Award winner Mike Scott of Pepperdine pitches a perfect game for Pepperdine against California Lutheran University. The right-hander, who will throw a no-hitter as a major leaguer for the Astros, will be selected by the Mets in the second round in the June draft.

1987 - Yankee first baseman Don Mattingly wins his $1.975 arbitration case breaking the record for the largest amount ever awarded to a player set by Jack Morris just four days ago.

1995 - Unwilling to be part of an inferior product placed on the field and as a show of support for his players, Tigers skipper Sparky Anderson is suspended without pay when he refuses to manage replacement players in spring training during 1995 work stoppage. The popular pilot will resume his duties when the strike is resolved, but will 'retire', some believe not voluntarily, at the end of the season.

2003 - Avoiding arbitration, the Braves and 36-year old righty Greg Maddux (16-6, 2.62) agree the largest one-year contract in major league history. The $14.75 million deal for the four-time Cy Young Award winner eclipses the $12 million given to David Cone by Yankees in 2000.

2003 - After his body temperature soars to 108 degrees, Orioles pitching prospect Steve Belcher dies of multi-organ failure following a spring training workout in Fort Lauderdale. Early speculation is the 23-year old expectant father's death may have been caused by ephedrine, the dietary supplement linked to heatstroke and heart attacks.

2005 - The Chicago White Sox signed Raul Casanova as a free agent.

2006 - White Sox skipper Ozzie Guillen issues an apology for his comments published in Sports Illustrated criticizing Alex Rodriguez’s indecision concerning which country the Yankee All-star would represent in the World Baseball Classic. A-Rod, who was born in the United States, thought at first he would play for the Dominican Republic due to his parents’ heritage, then decided he was not going to play at all before choosing to play for Team USA.

2007 - In a poll conducted by his hometown newspaper, more than half of the respondants thought Carl Pavano would not bounce back with the Yankees this year. The reader poll, which was posted on myrecordjournal.com site, revealed 54.5% believe the Yankee pitcher would not overcome his slow start with the team while 45.5% stated he would have a comeback season.

2008 - The Colorado Rockies signed Scott Podsednik as a free agent.

2009 - The Marlins announced a contract extension for manager Fredi Gonzalez through the end of 2011. The South Florida native, who became just the third skipper in franchise history to compile a winning campaign, guiding the club to an 84-77 record, was named The Sporting News Manager of the Year last season.

2011 - Jose Bautista and the Blue Jays come to terms on a $64-million, five-year contract extension. The 30 year-old thirdbaseman/outfielder, last season's major league leader with 54 home runs, set a record for the largest increase in round-trippers for single season in baseball history, hitting 41 more homers than his total of 13 in 2009.

2015 - The Anaheim Angels signed Matt Lindstrom as a free agent.

2015 - The Baltimore Orioles signed Jayson Nix as a free agent.

2015 - The Detroit Tigers signed Casper Wells as a free agent.

On February 18 in Baseball History...

1909 - The Boston Red Sox trade Cy Young, who won 21 games at age 41 in 1908, to the Cleveland Naps for pitchers Charlie Chech and Jack Ryan and $12,500.

1922 - Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis resigns his federal judgeship, claiming the two jobs (judge and commissioner of baseball) take up too much time.

1943 -  New York entrepreneur William D. Cox purchases the bankrupt Phillies from the National League. The 33 year-old new owner will be banned from baseball in November by commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis when he admits to making some "sentimental" bets on his team during the season.

1944 - Just one day after playing in a high school basketball game, 15-year old Joe Nuxhall signs a contract with the Reds. The not so old "Ol' Left-hander" becomes the youngest player ever to appear in a big league game, tossing 2/3 of an inning for Cincinnati in June, 49 days before his sixteenth birthday.

1954 - In their first major trade since moving from St. Louis, the Orioles, formerly known as the Browns, exchange outfielders with the Senators sending Roy Sievers to Washington for Gil Coan. Sievers will spend five solid seasons in the nation’s capital, making the All-Star squad twice, and, Conan, playing less than two seasons in Baltimore, compiles a .266 batting average with three home runs playing in 155 games.

1960 - Walter O'Malley completes the purchase of land just north of downtown Los Angeles as the site of a new ballpark for his transplanted Brooklyn club. The Dodger owner paid a reported $494,000 for the property at Chavez Ravine, believed to be worth $92,000 at the time.

1967 - During a special softball exhibition game, pitcher Eddie Feigner strikes six consecutive major leaguers. The victims include Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Brooks Robinson, Harmon Killebrew, Roberto Clemente and Maury Wills.

1998 - Long time baseball announcer Harry Caray dies at the age of 84 after suffering a heart attack four days earlier while having Valentine’s Day dinner with his wife, Dutchie. The colorful "Mayor of Rush Street" started his career in 1945 with the Cardinals and also did play-by-play for the A’s, White Sox, and the Cubs during his 52 years in the broadcast booth.

1999 - The Blue Jays trade Roger Clemens to the Yankees for David Wells, Graeme Lloyd, and Homer Bush.

2005 - After five months of captivity in a Venezuelan jungle surrounded by explosives to keep her from escaping, Ugueth Urbina’s mother, Maura Villarreal, is rescued during a daring eight-hour police raid. The kidnappers had demanded $6 million ransom from the Tigers’ relief pitcher for his mom’s freedom.

2008 - The New York Mets signed Jose Valentin as a free agent.

2009 - After considering to play for Atlanta, a location which is closer to his family, Ken Griffey Jr. agrees to a one-year deal with the Seattle Mariners. The 39-year old outfielder joins a list of superstars, Babe Ruth (Boston), Willie Mays (New York), and Hank Aaron (Milwaukee), to choose the city where they played with their first team as the place to end their major league career.

2009 - At 11:25 a.m., the last remaining piece of Shea Stadium, the ramp to section 5, is demolished marking the end of the New York ballpark where the Mets played for 44 years. The space will become a parking lot for the team’s new home, the $800-million Citi Field, which will open in April.

2010 - The Florida Marlins signed Mike MacDougal as a free agent.

2011 - The Orioles officially announce the signing of Vladimir Guerrero after the 36-year-old passed his physical. The team's new everyday designated hitter, who batted .300 with 29 homers and 115 RBIs with the American League Champion Rangers last season, agrees to a one-year, $8 million deal to play in Baltimore.

2011 - In the first game of the season, Garrett Wittels goes 0-for-4 against Southeastern Louisiana, leaving the Florida International University junior two games short of Robin Ventura's Division 1 record of hitting in 58 consecutive games established by the former major leaguer in 1987. The overall NCAA mark is 60 straight games set by Damian Costantino playing for Division III Salve Regina from 2001-03.

On February 19 in Baseball History...

1935 - Lou Gehrig signs a one-year deal with the Yankees for $30,000. Last season, the All-star first baseman hit .363 with 49 homers and led the American League with 165 RBIs.

1942 - Unable to find relief from migraine headaches, Indian first baseman Hal Trosky retires from baseball.

1946 - Danny Gardella becomes the first major league player to jump to the Mexican League. The outfielder goes south of the border lured by a salary of $10,000, more than double the amount offered by the Giants.

1953 - After being hit by enemy fire during a Korean combat mission, Ted Williams safely crash lands his Panther jet.

1970 - Effective April 1st, Tiger pitcher Denny McLain is suspended for three months by Commissioner Kuhn for his alleged connection with bookmakers.

1977 - The Rangers purchase Paul Lindblad from Oakland for $400,000. The left-handed reliever will appeared in 42 games for Texas this season posting a 4-5 record with an ERA of 4.20.

1983 - Fernando Valenzuela becomes the first player to be awarded $1,000,000 via the arbitration process. The 22-year old Mexican southpaw has compiled a career record of 34-20 during his three years with the Dodgers.

1987 - After signing a contract as a free agent with the A's less than a month ago, Vida Blue unexpectedly retires from baseball.

2002 - The 37-year-old Jose Canseco (.258, 16, 49) signs a minor league contract with the lame duck Expos. The 17-year veteran, who was the 1985 American League Rookie of the Year in 1985 and its 1986 MVP, is 38 homers shy of the coveted 500 mark.

2008 - In a deal which includes a club option worth $10 million, sophomore Ian Kinsler (.286, 14, 55) signs a five-year, $22 million contract with the Rangers. With the signing of the 24-year-old second baseman and last season's contract extension for All-Star shortstop Michael Young Texas has locked up the middle of their infield through 2013.

2009 - Despite his poor performance last season, the Braves give Jeff Francoeur (.239, 11, 71) a big raise over his previous salary of $460,000 agreeing to a one-year contract worth $3,375,000 with the outfielder. The deal, a compromise between their two offers, comes just hours prior to a scheduled salary arbitration hearing in Arizona.

2010 - The Nationals finalize a $2 million, one-year deal, that includes the opportunity to earn up to $3 million in performance-based bonuses, with former Yankee pitcher Chien-Ming Wang (1-6, 9.64 ERA). The 29-year old right-hander, who hasn't been the same since injuring his foot running the bases in a 2008 interleague game against Houston, underwent shoulder surgery last July and is not expected to pitch in the first few months of the season.

2011 - The New York Yankees signed Andy Sisco as a free agent.

2012 - At the Bell Centre, Canadiens mascot Youppi! wears his jersey with the Expos colors in place of his usual bleu-blanc-rouge (blue, white, and red) to honor the memory of former major league catcher Gary Carter, who died this week as the result of a brain tumor. The 57 year-old Hall of Famer, the only player enshrined as an Expo, and Youppi! played key roles for the National League team before the franchise left Montreal to move to Washington, D.C. in 2005.

2014 - Avoiding arbitration, Homer Bailey (11-12, 3.49) and the Reds agree to a $105 million, six-year deal, including a $25 million mutual option for 2020. The 27-year-old starter from Texas, the author of two major league no-hitters, will continue to be part of Cincinnati’s young rotation that includes Johnny Cueto, Mat Latos, Mike Leake and southpaw Tony Cingrani, who are all under the age of 30.

2015 - The Los Angeles Dodgers signed David Aardsma as a free agent.

2016 - The Atlanta Braves signed Carlos Torres as a free agent.

2016 - The Anaheim Angels signed Javy Guerra as a free agent.

On February 20 in Baseball History...

1903 - Nick Young remains N.L. president when A.G. Spalding bows out of the battle.

1923 - Christy Mathewson becomes president of the Boston Braves after buying the club for $300,000 with New York attorney Judge Emil Fuchs and Bostonian James McDonough. The deal does not include Braves Field, which still belongs to James Gaffney. There are also 85 minority stockholders.

1929 - The Red Sox announce they will play Sunday games (allowed for the first time in Boston) at Braves Field, because Fenway Park is located too close to a church.

1943 - Phil Wrigley and Branch Rickey charter the All-American Girls Softball League. The league will operate around the Chicago area and is formed as a sports backup in case the government shuts down major league baseball. The league will later change its name and switch to hardball with a pitching distance of 40 feet and bases 68 feet apart.

1953 -  Pledging not to move the team from St. Louis, beer baron August A. Busch convinces the Board of Directors of Anheuser-Busch to purchase the Cardinals for $3.75 million.

1958 - The Los Angeles Coliseum Commission approves a two-year pact for use of its facility by the Dodgers.

1963 - After leading the Giants to the pennant the previous season, Willie Mays becomes the highest paid player signing a $100,000 contract.

1963 - The Cubs officially put an end to their radical approach in using multiple field bosses during the course of the season when they hire Bob Kennedy as their only manager. With the "College of Coaches" system disbanded, the club will post an 82-80 record under their lone skipper.

1980 - The era of 'Billy Ball' begins in Oakland when Billy Martin is hired as the manager of the A's for $125,000. During his three-year tenure in the dugout, the fiery skipper will compile a 215-218 record and will win a division title as the first half leader in the AL West of the 1981 strike-shortened season.

1984 - Pedro Guerrero becomes the highest paid Dodger when he signs a five-year, seven million dollar contract to play in Los Angeles.

1992 - After Homer Simpson and his co-workers qualify the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant's softball team for the league final, Mr. Montgomery Burns, the owner of the facility, hires nine professional MLB players, to win a $1 million bet with his Shelbyville rival. Although he hits nine home runs, the southpaw-swinging Darryl Strawberry, the only major leaguer to actual participate in the game, after Roger Clemens, Wade Boggs, Ken Griffey Jr., Steve Sax, Ozzie Smith, José Canseco, Don Mattingly, and Mike Scioscia are all sidelined after being involved in a series of bizarre pre-game accidents, will be replaced by Homer in the last inning, because Burns wants a righty to face the opponent’s left-hander.

2008 - "My, oh my”, Mariners broadcaster Dave Niehaus is going into the Baseball Hall of Fame. On his 73rd birthday, the veteran announcer learns he is the recipient of the 2008 Ford C. Frick Award for broadcast excellence.

2009 - Tom Glavine, with the most wins among active pitchers, agrees to a one-year, $1 million deal to stay with the Braves. The 42-year-old southpaw, who underwent surgery for a torn ligament in his left elbow, posted a 2-4 record with a 5.54 ERA in 13 starts for Atlanta before being shut down for the season last August.

2009 - Baltimore inks Brian Roberts to a four-year contract extension reported to be worth $40 million. Along with Nick Markakis, who recently signed a six-year, $66 million deal, the 31-year-old talented second basemen becomes the second home-grown Oriole player within a month to agree to a long term deal to stay with the last-place club.

2009 - Avoiding arbitration, the Nationals and Ryan Zimmerman (.283, 14, 51) agree to a one-year, $3.3 million contract. The 24-year-old third baseman is Washington’s all-time leader in almost every offensive category, including homers, RBI, runs, and hits, as well as contests played, since the franchise relocated from Montreal four seasons ago.

2012 - The Texas Rangers signed Neal Cotts as a free agent.

2012 - The Oakland Athletics signed Manny Ramirez as a free agent.

On February 21 in Baseball History...

1931 - The Chicago White Sox and the New York Giants become the first major league teams to meet in a night game. They collect 23 hits in a 10-inning exhibition game played at Buffs Stadium in Houston.

1931 - The Dodgers arrive in Cuba to start a series of five inter-squad games.

1945 - Due to wartime travel restrictions, baseball decides to cancel the All-Star game. It is the only time the Midsummer Classic will not be played since the game's inception in 1933.

1951 - The South Carolina House introduces a resolution urging that Shoeless Joe Jackson, who was banished from baseball because of his part in the Black Sox Scandal of 1919, be reinstated.

1957 - Dodgers owner Walter O'Malley trades minor league franchises with Phil Wrigley of the Cubs. Brooklyn gives up its Ft. Worth club (Texas League) in return for the Los Angeles Angels (Pacific Coast League). In a year's time, Brooklyn will be without a team and Los Angeles will be a major league city.

1966 - Emmett Ashford becomes the first black to be a major league umpire when he is hired by the American League. 'Ash', known for his flashy style in the PCL, will spend five years in the bigs, working the 1967 All-Star game and the 1970 World Series, before reaching the mandatory retirement age of 56.

1968 - The first-ever collective basic agreement is signed by the players and owners. The CBA increases the minimum salary to $10,000 and introduces a formal grievance procedure.

1969 - Ted Williams returns to baseball full-time, signing a five-year contract to manage the Washington Senators.

1974 - Tom Seaver becomes the highest-paid pitcher in baseball history when he signs a contract for $172,000 per season to hurl for the Mets. 'Tom Terrrific' has posted a 135-76 record during his seven years in New York.

1985 - Tim Raines is awarded a $1.2 million salary for 1985 by arbitrator John Roberts. This is the largest award to date through the process. The 25-year-old Raines hit .309 for the Expos in 1984 and led all players with 75 stolen bases.

1986 - In defiance of the Reds' policy, Rollie Fingers refuses to cut off his trademark handlebar mustache and retires from baseball. The future Hall of Fame reliever, who leaves the game with 341 saves, had been offered a contract by Cincinnati's skipper Pete Rose after being released by the Brewers at the end of last season

1989 - Reds manager Pete Rose meets with Commissioner Peter Ueberroth and Commissioner-elect Bart Giamatti to explain the allegations concerning his gambling habits. Major League Major League Baseball will launch a full investigation into the matter next month which will lead to “Charlie Hustle’s” permanent ban from the game in August.

2000 - Denying the acquisition of Ken Griffey, Jr. as the reason, the Reds announce the team has dropped its ban on earrings. Players have worn them in the clubhouse, but weren't allowed on the field with them.

2006 - Gene Elston is selected by the National Baseball Hall of Fame to receive the Ford C. Frick Award. During his 47-years in the broadcast booth, the former Astros announcer brought a no-nonsense approach to reporting the happenings on the diamond.

2007 - The Detroit Tigers signed Timo Perez as a free agent.

2008 - Ryan Howard, who made $900,000 last season, gets a substantial raise by winning his salary arbitration case against the Phillies. The 28-year old first baseman is awarded $10 million, tying Alfonso Soriano, who had sought $12 million and lost, for the highest amount ever given to a player in the process.

2008 - The Chicago Cubs signed Alex Cintron as a free agent.

2008 - The Cincinnati Reds signed Josh Fogg as a free agent.

2008 - The Chicago White Sox signed Tomo Ohka as a free agent.

2009 - In a decision which team general manager Neal Huntington calls easy, the Pirates pick up John Russell’s contract option for this season. The sophomore skipper went 67-95 in his first season with the last-place Bucs.

2009 - The Minnesota Twins signed Joe Crede as a free agent.

2010 - The Chicago White Sox released Freddie Bynum.

2012 - The New York Yankees signed Eric Chavez as a free agent.

2012 - The Cleveland Indians signed Cristian Guzman as a free agent.

2012 - The New York Yankees signed Raul Ibanez as a free agent.

On February 22 in Baseball History...

1880 - George Wright signs a contract with the Boston Red Caps which he states allows him not to travel with the team on western road trips, but just participate in games played in New England and Troy. The arrangement will allow the shortstop to devote more time to his sporting goods business.

1889 - Italy's King Humbert is among the fans who witness the Chicagos beat the All-Americans, 3-2, outside of Rome at the Villia Borghesi. Originally billed as the Spalding’s Australian Baseball Tour is expanded to include contests in Europe much to the surprise of the captive players aboard ship en route to the Land Down Under.

1934 - George Lee Anderson is born in Bridgewater, South Dakota. He will earn the nickname Sparky, play 152 games for the Phillies in 1959, and never play another major league game. He will, however, win 2,194 games and capture world championships in both the N.L. and A.L. as manager of the Cincinnati Reds and Detroit Tigers.

1936 - As part of the Washington D.C. Sesquicentennial celebration, Senator legend Walter Johnson throws a baseball to the far side of the Rapahannock River. The event is designed to duplicate George Washington's alleged toss of a silver dollar across the Potomac River.

1938 - After college, Texas Christian football All-American Sammy Baugh signs a contract with the Cardinals. 'Slingin' Sammy', who will experience little playing time as a backup to starting shortstop Marty Marion, will leave the minor leagues to become the quarterback for the Washington Redskins of the National Football League.

1957 - Walter O'Malley says the Dodgers may play 10 exhibition games in California in 1958.

1980 - Billy Martin signs to manage the Athletics after another stormy partial season managing the Yankees.

2005 - San Diego broadcaster Jerry Coleman is selected as the recipient of the Hall of Fame's Ford C. Frick Award. The 80-year old play-by-play man, who was the MVP of the 1950 World Series, has spent 41 years in the booth working for the Yankees, Angels and Padres.

2005 - Tom Umberg, a California state assemblyman, introduces legislation which would require pro franchises to use disclaimers if they do not play the majority of home games in the location used in their name. With his`Truth in Sports Advertising Act', the Anaheim Democratic is trying prevent the local team from changing its name to Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

2006 - The Dodgers announce the team has extended the contract of Vin Scully through 2008. The Hall of Fame broadcaster, considered by many to be the best announcer in baseball history, is beginning his 57th year, believed to be the longest tenure of any on-air individual in sports history, in the Dodger organization.

2008 - Although he loses his request for $12.5 million, Francisco Rodriguez (2.81, 40 saves) is awarded $10 million tying Alfonso Soriano (Nationals) and Ryan Howard (Phillies) for the most money ever awarded in a salary arbitration case. The 26-year-old Angels closer leads the majors for saves during the last three seasons with a total of 132.

2008 - The Mets, who had not gone to arbitration with a player in 16 years, come out on the short end of the hearing when southpaw Oliver Perez (15-10, 3.56) gets a favorable decision in his case from arbitrators Steven Wolf, Robert Bailey and Elizabeth Neumeier. The southpaw will be paid $6.5 million this season rather than the club's offer of $4,725,000.

2009 - The Los Angeles Dodgers signed Orlando Hudson as a free agent.

2010 - Johnny Damon and the Tigers agree to an $8 million, one-year deal. The 36-year-old left-swinging outfielder, who hit .282 with 24 homers for the World Champion Yankees last season, will bat lead off for Detroit, who missed their chance for the postseason by losing a one-game tiebreaker to Minnesota.

2012 - The New York Yankees signed David Aardsma as a free agent.

2013 - The San Francisco Giants traded Conor Gillaspie to Chicago White Sox in exchange for Jeff Soptic.

2016 - The Chicago White Sox signed Jimmy Rollins as a free agent.

On February 23 in Baseball History...

1921 - Rabbit Maranville is traded by Brooklyn to the Pirates for Billy Southworth, Fred Nicholson, Walter Barbare, and $15,000 in cash. The future Hall of Fame shortstop will spend four of his 19 major league seasons playing for the Bucs providing excellent defense for the team while compiling a .283 batting average.

1934 - Brooklyn coach Casey Stengel, signs a two-year deal to manage the Dodgers, replacing skipper Max Carey, who guided the sixth-place club to a 65-88 record last season. During the rookie's skipper three-year tenure with the team, the Brooks will finish 43 games under .500.

1960 - Twenty-eight months after the Dodgers play their last game in Brooklyn, the demolition of Ebbets Field finally begins. The National Anthem is sung by pop singer Lucy Monroe, and a wheel-chair bound Roy Campanella, the team's former catcher, is given an urn of dirt from behind home plate.

1964 - Charlie Finley gives in to A.L. pressure and signs a four-year lease with the municipal government to keep the A's in Kansas City. Finley wanted two years. His exasperated A.L. colleagues voted 9-1 that KC's offer was reasonable.

1976 - Major league owners announce that spring training will not open until a new labor contract is agreed upon.

1986 - Although he loses his arbitration case, Boston third baseman Wade Boggs receives the largest amount ($1.35 million) ever awarded by this process. Last season's AL batting champ had sought $1.85 million, but arbitrator Thomas Roberts rules in favor of the Red Sox, resulting in a drop of a half-million dollars for the infielder.

1987 - Three days into spring training, Dick Howser's attempted comeback after undergoing brain tumor surgery comes to an end when the frail-looking Royals manager finds he is physically too weak to continue. Third base coach Billy Gardner replaces the ill skipper, who will die three months later at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City.

1988 - A committee of Chicago aldermen, facing the loss of the 1990 All-Star game and possible post-season games, allow the Cubs to play 18 night games at Wrigley Field, the last major league ballpark to be illuminated. In 1942, team owner P.K. Wrigley had planned to be among the first to install lights, but the idea was abandoned when the materials were needed for the war effort.

1990 - Although the owners drop their arbitration and minimum salary proposals, spring training camps remain closed. Baseball's seventh work stoppage in baseball will last 32 days resulting in Opening Day being moved back a week and the over-all season extended by three days in order to accommodate the 162-game schedule.

1997 - Ira Berkow’s front page story about Larry Doby appears in the Sunday New York Times. The article spurs much interest about the first black to play in the American League and many believe leads to the outfielder’s election to the Hall of Fame the following year.

2000 - Cubs manager Don Baylor names four captains including first baseman Mark Grace, right fielder Sammy Sosa, pitcher Kevin Tapani and reliever Rick Aguilera. The quartet will be the Cubs' first captains since the 1960s and early 1970s when Ron Santo held the position.

2006 - Complaining about the lack of support from local baseball officials, Roberto Kelly resigns as manager of Panama's team in the World Baseball Classic. The Giants spring training instructor believes some players were held back from participating in the WBC so they would play in the Panamanian championships.

2012 - Avoiding a 50-game suspension, Ryan Braun becomes the first major league player to successfully challenge the results of a positive test. The panel that heard the appeal voted 2-1 in favor of the 28 year-old Brewer outfielder because the test collector kept the urine sample at home and stored it in his refrigerator for two days before sending the specimen to a Montreal laboratory for analysis.

2012 - The Colorado Rockies signed Royce Ring as a free agent.

2013 - The Pittsburgh Pirates signed Jose Contreras as a free agent.

2013 - Jason Bay, who mutually agreed to terminate his contract with the Mets in November after three years of futility in New York, clouts a two-run homer in his first at-bat of spring training in the Mariners' 8-6 exhibition victory over the Padres. The likable, but oft injured outfielder signed with Seattle in the off-season for $1 million, a far cry from the four-year, $66-million free-agent deal he inked when he left Boston for the Big Apple in 2009.

2016 - Jose Reyes becomes the first player disciplined under baseball’s new domestic violence policy when he is placed on paid leave until the completion of criminal proceedings, stemming from his arrest following an argument with his wife at a Hawaiian resort in late October. The 32-year-old All-Star shortstop, who pleaded not guilty to a charge of abuse of a family member, will not report to spring training with the Rockies.

2016 - At a news conference at Borough Hall in Queens, the Mets announce the team will host an LGBT Pride Night on August 13 at Citi Field, featuring discounted seating for the game against the Padres and a free postgame concert. A portion of the proceeds from each ticket sold at Mets.com/pride for the event, which is expected to attract more than 5,000 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender fans, will benefit the LGBT Network, a non-profit organization, and its Safe Schools Initiative working to stop bullying in Long Island and Queens.

On February 24 in Baseball History...

1917 - The Red Sox sell Smokey Joe Wood, his arm dead at 26, to Cleveland for $15,000. He will become an outfielder after one last, losing start on the mound, and play five more years.

1926 - Southpaw Eddie Plank, winner of 326 games with a 2.35 career ERA, dies at 50 in his native Gettysburg, Pa.

1943 - The Texas League announces it will quit for the duration of World War II. The Cardinals, with 260 farm players in the service, will reduce farm clubs from 22 to six. Only nine minor leagues will start the 1943 season. Advertisements for players appear in The Sporting News.

1948 - The White Sox trade Ed Lopat to the Yankees for Aaron Robinson, Bill Wight and Fred Bradley.

1966 - University of Southern California pitcher Tom Seaver is signed by the Braves. The deal will later be voided, and the USC stand-out will be selected by the Mets in a special draft.

1977 - The Oakland A’s trade Ron Fairly to the Toronto Blue Jays for minor leaguer Mike Weathers and cash. The Macon, Georgia native, who played with the Montreal Expos from 1969 to 1974, becomes the first major leaguer to appear with both Canadian teams.

1986 - Padre manager Dick Williams resigns and will be replaced by Steve Boros.

1990 - At the age of 45, former Red Sox fan favorite Tony Conigliaro dies of pneumonia and kidney failure. Hitting 32 home runs in 1965 at the age of 20, the Revere, MA native becomes the youngest player ever to lead the American League in home runs.

2002 - The Montreal Expos released Lyle Mouton.

2003 - In the wake of Steve Belcher's death, Commissioner Bud Selig bans the use of ephedra in the minor leagues. Players on the current 40-man major league rosters, which would have included the 23-year old Oriole pitcher who died last week, are not prohibited to use the substance because as union members they are already covered by the drug-testing rules of the new collective bargaining agreement, which bans only drugs of abuse and certain illegal steroids.

2008 - The Boston Red Sox signed Bartolo Colon as a free agent.

2010 - A Kansas man, who sat six rows behind the third-base dugout, files a lawsuit against the Royals as a result being hit in the eye by a hot dog thrown by Sluggerrr, the team’s mascot. The suit is seeking $25,000 in damages for injuries caused by the flying frank which includes a detached retina and the development of cataracts in the left eye.

2014 - The Baltimore Orioles signed Nelson Cruz as a free agent.

2014 - The Pittsburgh Pirates claimed Brent Morel from the Toronto Blue Jays on waivers.

2017 - The Washington Nationals signed Matt Wieters as a free agent.

On February 25 in Baseball History...

1933 - Four days after turning thirty years old and acquiring a very generous inheritance from his step-father, Tom Yawkey purchases the Red Sox from Robert Quinn for $1.2 million. The acquisition of the Boston American League franchise, which lasts for 44 years, the longest by a sole owner in baseball history, is prompted by former school classmate and Hall of Fame infielder Eddie Collins, who will serve as the team's general manager until 1947.

1934 - At the age of 60, John McGraw dies at New Rochelle Hospital, two weeks after entering the facility with optimistic reports about his recovery. The renowned Giants skipper, known as 'Little Napolean' due to his style and stature, won ten pennants and three world championships during his 30 years as the team's manager.

1957 - The U.S. Supreme Court decides 6-3 that baseball is the only professional sport exempt from antitrust laws. The issue arises when pro football seeks similar protection from the laws.

1965 - The MLB owners refuse to raise the minimum salary requested by the players to $7,000 from the current $6,000, a level that is only $500 more since the first minimum salary was established 18 years ago. In 1968, thanks to the first-ever collective bargaining agreement in professional sport, the amount will be raised to $10,000, setting the tone for more rapid increases in the coming years.

1969 - Baseball avoids the first work stoppage in its history when the owners agree to increase their contribution to the newly revised pension plan, which changes the players ability to qualify from five years to four with the minimum age being lowered from fifty to forty-five to receive benefits. Other improvements include the players agreeing to collect $5.45 million per year, retroactive to 1959, as well as a percentage of the revenue generated by televised games.

1972 - Due to a salary impasse, the Cardinals trade 20-game winner Steve Carlton (20-9) to the last place Phillies for Rick Wise (17-14), who learns of the trade when Eddie Ferenz, the team's traveling secretary, knocks on the all-star hurler's condo door in Clearwater Beach early in the morning to inform the stunned pitcher of the spring training transaction. 'Lefty' will post a 27-10 record for Philadelphia and will win the National League Cy Young Award.

1973 - The spring training lockout ends when the players' union and the owners reach a three-year agreement. The new collective bargaining agreement establishes salary arbitration for players with two or more years of major league service, raises the minimum salary to $15‚000 and includes the new “10 and 5″ trade rule‚ that allows a player with ten years in the major leagues‚ in which the last five are with his current team‚ to block any trade involving him.

1981 - The Executive Board of the Players' Association votes unanimously to strike on May 29 if the issue of free-agent compensation remains unresolved. That deadline will be extended briefly, however, when the Players Association's unfair labor practices complaint is heard by the National Labor Relations Board.

1987 - Commissioner Ueberroth bans former Cy Young Award winner LaMarr Hoyt from major league baseball for the 1987 season due to multiple drug-related incidents during the past year. The penalty will be reduced to sixty days, and the Padres will be ordered to reinstate the right-hander by an arbitrator.

1993 - Resembling a marlin with arms and legs, 'Billy' is introduced as the mascot of the new National League franchise in Miami. Owner Wayne Huizenga selects the name partly because a dolphin is from the species of fish known as "billfish", and it was different from typical baseball mascot names like Smasher.

1994 - After a long campaign by Yankee fans, including owner George Steinbrenner, the Veterans Committee elects Phil Rizzuto to the Hall of Fame, along with posthumous selection of Leo Durocher. The former infielder and current television broadcaster's enshrinement, that causes much debate given the borderline career stats, became especially important to his supporters when Pee Wee Reese, a similar-styled shortstop of the rival crosstown Brooklyn Dodgers was inducted 1984.

2002 - Diamondbacks' third baseman Matt Williams breaks a bone in his left leg during the morning workout. Arizona will not issue a timetable for the return of the 36-year-old veteran.

2002 - The 84-year-old Hall of Fame broadcaster, Ernie Harwell, announces this season will be his last as the Tigers' radio play-by-play announcer. During his 62-year career behind the mike, the winner of the 1981 Ford Frick Award for baseball broadcasting excellence had worked for the Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Giants and Baltimore Orioles before moving to Detroit.

2003 - Blue Jays' World Series hero Joe Carter is selected for a June induction into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. Pete Rose, who played 95 games for the Expos and collected his 4000th hit with Montreal, was one of the 46 nominees considered, but was not chosen by 75 per cent of the voters.

2005 - After winning an auction for its one-day naming rights, Kerry Konrad originally planned to change the Fleet Center's name to honor Yankee captain Derek Jeter, but agrees to rename the Boston arena as the 'Jimmy Fund Center'. The New York fan's change of heart is prompted by a friend’s offer of an additional $6,275 for the childhood cancer charity, bringing the total amount to $8,600, reflecting the 86 years between Red Sox World Championships.

2008 - Terry Francona signs a three-year contract extension that runs through 2011, and includes team options for 2012 and 2013, to continue as manager of the Red Sox. After an eighty-six year drought, the BoSox skipper has led the club to a pair of World Series titles in four seasons at the helm.

2010 - The Rangers void Khalil Greene’s contract announcing the reason for the action is a private matter, and is being done in the best interest of the ballplayer. The 30-year old utility infielder, who missed 49 games with the Cardinals last season because of social anxiety, was unable to report to spring training last week as a result of his unidentified problem.

2012 - On their Twitter account, the Mets send out an image of the patch the team will wear this season in memory of Gary Carter, who died earlier in the month of brain cancer at the age of 57. The black oval will feature the nickname of the former New York catcher, Kid, and his number 8.

2013 - The Toronto Blue Jays claimed Lars Anderson from Chicago White Sox on waivers.

2015 - The Arizona Diamondbacks signed Erick Threets as a free agent.

2016 - The players' union and MLB agree to a slide rule in the aftermath of Ruben Tejada's broken leg during the NLDS. The new policy, the direct result of Chase Utley attempt to break up a double play that injured the Mets infielder, will be reviewable and will continue to allow contact to be permissible with the fielder, but the runner cannot change his path to disrupt the play deliberately.

On February 26 in Baseball History...

1935 -  Babe Ruth is granted his release by the Yankees giving the aging superstar an opportunity to play for the Braves. The 39-year old outfielder hit 659 home runs and batted .349 during his 15-year tenure with New York.

1943 - The Phillies hire future Hall of Famer Bucky Harris to manage the club. The veteran skipper, who compiles a 39-54 record, will be fired at the end of July by new owner Bill Cox and replaced by Freddie Fitzsimmons.

1952 - Don Newcombe, who posted a 56-28 record his first three years with the Dodgers, will miss the next two seasons when he is sworn into the Army to serve in the Korean War. The 26-year old right-hander struggles upon his return in 1954, but returns to form the following season with a 20-5 record helping the team to capture their only world championship while playing in Brooklyn.

1957 - The Giants trade right-hander Hoyt Wilhelm to the Cardinals for their former all-star first baseman/outfielder Whitey Lockman. The knuckleballer will win only one of five decisions for the Redbirds before being selected off waivers by Cleveland in September, and New York's newest infielder will spend two seasons with his old club hitting .246 in 225 games over that span.

1989 - The $12 million breach-of-contract suit brought against Wade Boggs by Margo Adams is thrown out by a California court. The former Miss Anaheim claimed the Red Sox third baseman had promised her a salary and expenses during their four-year association.

1991 - Bill Veeck, the colorful owner of the Browns, Indians and White Sox (twice) and Yankees great Tony Lazzeri are elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee.

1992 - Red Sox owner Jean Yawkey dies at the age of 83 after suffering a stroke. Her interest in the team will passed into the JRY Trust, headed by the club's CEO John Harrington, who will sell the team to John Henry and a group of investors in 2002.

2004 - With hundreds of on-lookers, including a man covered in ivy, singing Take Me Out to the Ball Game, the foul ball made famous by Steve Bartman in the 2003 NLCS playoffs is blown up at Harry Caray's restaurant in Chicago. The infamous ball's demise is executed by Cubs' die-hard fan Michael Lantieri, an Oscar Award winner who has worked on similar special effects in the movies Jurassic Park and Back to the Future.

2005 - Atlanta Braves’ hurler Mike Hampton and his wife offer a $25,000 reward for the safe return of Jessica Marie Lunsford. The nine-year old, who disappeared from her Florida bedroom four days ago, is in the same grade with one of the Hamptons' two sons at Homosassa Elementary School.

2006 - Frustrated with the latest comments from former employee Frank Thomas, Chicago White Sox general manager Kenny Williams responds by calling his former superstar selfish as well as being an idiot. The former MVP, who signed with the A's in January, has been very vocal about feeling unappreciated and mistreated by Chicago after spending 16 years with the organization.

2009 - Tim Lincecum (18-5, 2.62) signs a $650,000, one-year deal with the Giants. The 24-year-old right-hander was the National League Cy Young Award in last season, fanning a big league-leading 265 batters while yielding 182 hits in 227 innings.

2014 - The Chicago White Sox claimed Maikel Cleto from the Kansas City Royals on waivers.

2018 - The Boston Red Sox signed J.D. Martinez as a free agent.

On February 27 in Baseball History...

1901 - The N.L. Rules Committee decrees that all fouls are to count as strikes, except after two strikes. To cut the cost of lost foul balls, the committee urges that batsmen who foul off good strikes are to be disciplined. Other new rules: catchers must play within 10 feet of the batter, a ball will be called if the pitcher does not throw to a ready and waiting batter within 20 seconds, and players using indecent or improper language will be banished by the umpire. A ball will be called when a batter is hit by a pitch.

1908 - The sacrifice fly rule is adopted. No time at bat is charged if a run scores after the catch of a fly ball. The rule will be repealed in 1931, then reinstated (or changed) several times before gaining permanent acceptance in 1954.

1912 - The Yankees announce they will begin wearing pinstripes on their uniforms. It will take a few seasons (April 22, 1915) before the vertical lines becomes a reality.

1948 - Pirates legendary third baseman Pie Traynor and left-hander Herb Pennock are elected by the BBWAA to the Hall of Fame. The Pittsburgh infielder spent his entire 17-year career in the Steel City compiling a .320 lifetime batting average, and the 'Knight Of Kennett Square' posted a .590 win-loss percentage during his 22 seasons in the majors, including a 162-90 stint for the Yankees from 1923-1933.

1973 - White Sox slugger Dick Allen signs a three-year contract for an estimated $250,000 per year, making him the highest-paid player in major league history.

1984 - San Francisco trades pitcher Fred Breining and Max Venable to the Expos for Al Oliver. In August, the Giants will trade the veteran first baseman along with Renie Martin to the Phillies for Kelly Downs and George Riley.

1985 - Toby Harrah is traded by the Yankees to Texas for outfielder Billy Sample and a player to be named later. The 36-year old veteran infielder, an original Ranger, will become the club's manager for one year in 1992.

1988 - The Orioles trade third baseman Ray Knight to Detroit for pitcher Mark Thurmond. The 1986 World Series MVP, after playing primarily as the Tigers' first baseman and DH, will retire at the end of the season after batting only .217.

1989 - John Olerud, a Blue Jay selection in the draft, undergoes brain surgery for the removal of an aneurysm. The Washington State University left-handed first baseman had collapsed on January 11 after a workout.

1990 - The Special Veterans Committee fails to elect a single player to the Hall of Fame for the second time in three years

2003 - The new Veterans Hall of Fame selection committee, made up of mostly Hall of Famers, fail to select any of the 41 players, executives and umpires being considered. Gil Hodges is 11 votes shy of 75 percent needed for induction receiving 50 votes of 81 votes cast (61.7%).

2006 - In spring training intra-squad action, Koby Clemens goes deep off a 43-year old non-roster pitcher, who was given special permission to train with the Astros. In his next at-bat, the 19-year old minor leaguer gets brushed back with an inside fastball by the 300-game winner, his dad, Roger.

2006 - Effa Manley is among the 17 significant historical figures from the Negro Leagues to be selected by a special committee for induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame. The former Newark Eagles executive, known as the Boss, will become the first woman to be enshrined in Cooperstown.

2008 - The White Sox wear Northern Illinois University baseball caps in their spring training opening game to honor the victims of a shooting rampage on the school's campus earlier this month. After the contest, the players autograph the hats which will be auctioned off at NIU to benefit a scholarship fund set up in memory of the five students who were killed in the attack.

2014 - The Chicago White Sox sold Jake Elmore to Oakland Athletics.

2016 - The Houston Astros signed Neal Cotts as a free agent.

On February 28 in Baseball History...

1903 - A syndicate headed by Pittsburgh owner Barney Dreyfuss and James Potter buys the Phillies from John Rogers and A. J. Reach for $170,000. It will be another seven years before ownership interest in more than one team is prohibited.

1931 - Ban Johnson dies after a long illness. He had created the A.L. and was its dynamic, dictatorial leader until subdued by the advent of Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis, who took office as the first commissioner in January 1921.

1966 - Refusing to report to spring training, Dodger pitchers Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale begin their joint holdout asking for a $1 million, three-year contract, to be divided equally between them. The deal, equivalent to an annual salary of $167,000 for each hurler, will make them the best paid players in baseball, easily surpassing Willie Mays's $125,000 yearly paycheck with the Giants.

1975 - The Mets purchase slugger Dave Kingman from the Giants. The 26-year old first baseman/outfielder was drafted by San Francisco as the team’s first pick in the initial round of the secondary phase of the 1970 amateur draft.

1985 - Rick Reuschel signs as a free-agent with the Pirates and spends the first two months in the minors. After being called up in May, 'Big Daddy' wins 14 games and the Comeback Player of the Year Award.

1986 -  In baseball's sternest disciplinary move since the Black Sox were banished for life, Commissioner Peter Ueberroth gives seven players who were admitted drug users a choice of a year's suspension without pay or heavy fines and career-long drug testing, along with 100 hours of drug-related community service. Joaquin Andujar, Jeffrey Leonard, Enos Cabell, Keith Hernandez, Dave Parker, Dale Berra, and Lonnie Smith will be fined 10 percent of their annual salaries, while 14 other players will receive lesser penalties for their involvement with illegal drugs.

1989 - Red Schoendienst, who spent 19 years in the major leagues and managed the Cardinals to a world championship in 1967, and, Al Barlick, a 29-year veteran umpire, best known for his booming voice, are elected to the Hall of Fame by the veterans committee. The pair will be inducted along with Johnny Bench and Carl Yastrzemski, who were selected by BBWWA last month.

1990 - After meeting for more than five hours and taking three ballots, veterans committee, for the second time in three years, does not select a player for induction to the Hall of Fame. Phil Rizzuto, Nellie Fox, Richie Ashburn, Leo Durocher, Joe Gordon, Tony Lazzeri, Cecil Travis, Carl Mays, Vic Willis, Hal Newhouser, and umpire Bill McGowan were the finalists who each did not receive the 11 votes required for election from the 14 members present at the annual meeting.

2000 - Yankee outfielder/DH Darryl Strawberry is suspended for one year after testing positive for coc@ine last month. Baseball commissioner Bud Selig does not make any provision for an early return from the suspension based on good behavior.

2005 - The Detroit Tigers signed Dewayne Wise as a free agent.

2005 - Right-hander Jake Peavy (15-6, 2.27) and the Padres agree to the terms of a four-year deal with the team holding an option for a fifth year. The 23-year old right-hander, who led the majors with the lowest ERA, opted to sign now rather to take a chance in his first year of salary arbitration eligibility after the season.

2011 - The U.S. government places a plaque at Jackie Robinson's former apartment in Montreal as a tribute to the Canadian city for their exemplary treatment of the future Hall of Fame infielder. The season before he broke the color barrier, the Dodger farmhand led the hometown Royals to the 1946 International League championship with a .349 batting average and earned the circuit's Most Valuable Player for his outstanding performance with the team.

2016 - The Cleveland Indians signed Juan Uribe as a free agent.

On March 1 in Baseball History...

1903 - The rules committee sets the height of the pitcher mound (box) to a maximum of fifteen inches.

1909 - The Pirates begin construction of a new stadium near Schenley Park near the Oakland section of Pittsburgh. The state-of-the-art stadium was named Forbes Field in honor of a pre-Revolutionary British general.

1942 - Owners decide not to allow furloughed players in the military to play for their clubs if based near a game site.

1947 - In anticipation of the signing of the first black players, Bill Veeck, a resident of Phoenix, sets up a spring training camp there for the Cleveland Indians. Arizona is chosen because of its relatively tolerant racial climate. During the season, Veeck will sign the A.L.'s first black player, Larry Doby, who will train at the Arizona camp. The Giants also set up camp in Arizona, while the Dodgers move their training camp from Florida to Havana, Cuba.

1949 - In an effort to get a rental increase from their Sportsman's Park's tenants, the Browns move to evict the Cardinals. The Redbirds accuse the owners of breaking the lease, and as the season approaches it is uncertain where the National League team will play its home games.

1954 - On the first day of spring training, Red Sox outfielder Ted Williams breaks his collarbone. The Boston superstar will miss the first four weeks of the season.

1961 - Six weeks after leaving the Oval Office, former President Dwight Eisenhower jokes with the Angel players prior to an intra-squad game. Ike will sit in the dugout with the newly established expansion team during its five-inning scrimmage.

1967 - Commissioner General William Eckert approves the BBWAA's plan to select a Cy Young Award recipient from both the National League and American League. The honor, which was initiated in 1956, had been given to just one pitcher in the major leagues each season, a position strongly supported by former commissioner Ford Frick.

1969 - Citing "I can't hit when I need to", Mickey Mantle announces his retirement thus ending his fabled Hall of Fame career. The oft-injured Yankee slugger ranks third, behind Babe Ruth and Willie Mays, on the All-time home run list with 536 round-trippers, and finishes his 18-year stay in the majors with a .298 batting average.

1987 - Charlie Kerfeld and the Astros finally agree on a one-year deal worth $110,037.37 and 37 boxes of orange Jello. The Houston reliever, who wears number 37, insisted he earn more than teammate right-hander Jim DeShaies' $110,000 salary and wanted the gelatin for future pranks.

1988 - For the first time since 1956, the Special Veterans Committee does not elect anyone to the Hall of Fame. Phil Rizzuto, Leo Durocher, Joe Gordon, and Gil Hodges are among the candidates passed over.

1993 - Two and half years after accepting a life-long ban from being involved in the day-to-day operation with the team, Yankee owner George Steinbrenner is reinstated. 'The Boss' had been exiled from baseball by commissioner Fay Vincent in 1990 for hiring Howie Spira, a known g@mbler, to snoop into the life of star outfielder, Dave Winfield.

1994 - Former banker Leonard Coleman is elected National League president replacing Bill White. He had been executive director for Major League Baseball market development.

1995 - In an evening exhibition contest played in Tempe, the Angels, using replacement players, beat the Arizona State University Sun Devils squad, 13-5. It is the first time since 1912, that replacement players have been used in a major league game, and only time the team has worn big league uniforms.

2005 - Deciding not to file as a free agent at the end of the season, Tim Hudson (12-6, 3.53) agrees to a four-year, $47-million, contract extension with his new team, the Braves. The 29-year-old right-hander, who was acquired in a trade with Oakland in the off-season, grew up near Atlanta and rooted for the local team as a youngster.

2005 - Construction for an additional 1,790 bleacher seats at Wrigley Field will begin at the end of the season and will be completed in time for Opening Day 2006. A deal is reached for the expansion when the Cubs agree to pay the city $3.1 million prior to the start of work and by contributing funds for a local school park and a $400,000 traffic signal system near the ballpark.

2007 - The New York Mets signed Sandy Alomar as a free agent.

2007 - The Cincinnati Reds signed Dustin Hermanson as a free agent.

2009 - Insisting there was no wrongdoing on his part, Jim Bowden resigns as the general manager of the Nationals. The Washington GM is part of a federal probe investigating scouts and executives for accepting kickbacks from baseball bonuses intended for players signed in Latin America.

2012 - After spending 15 seasons with Boston, Jason Varitek, ninth on the all-time list with 1,546 games played in a Red Sox uniform, announces his retirement, leaving only Carl Yastrzemski (23), Ted Williams (19), and Jim Rice (16) with longer tenures with the team without playing for another franchise. The venerable catcher, who served as the BoSox captain for past seven seasons, is the only major leaguer to have played in the Little League World Series, the College World Series, the World Series, the Olympics, and the World Baseball Classic.

2012 - Yadier Molina signs a five-year extension with the Cardinals worth $75 million, an agreement that will keep the gold glove catcher with the world champions through 2017. This new contract, which takes effect next season, includes a mutual $15 million option that could add an another year to the deal.

2013 - The Cincinnati Reds signed Mark Prior as a free agent.

2015 - The Toronto Blue Jays signed Dayán Viciedo as a free agent.

2016 - The Detroit Tigers signed Lucas Harrell as a free agent.

On March 2 in Baseball History...

1874 - At the fourth meeting of the Professional Association in Boston, the batter's box is officially adopted. It is also decided that expulsion will be the penalty for any player betting on his own team and any player betting on any other team will forfeit his pay.

1901 - Jimmy Collins, Connie Mack's choice as the best all-time third baseman, switches leagues but not cities. Collins leaves Boston's N.L. club to manage the A.L.'s new Boston Somersets. The N.L. Beaneaters will also lose outfielder Hugh Duffy, who becomes manager of Milwaukee's new A.L. entry, and catcher Billy Sullivan, who signs with the Chicago White Stockings.

1918 - The Yankees purchase first baseman George Burns from the Detroit Tigers and immediately trade him to the Philadelphia Athletics for outfielder Ping Bodie.

1927 - Babe Ruth becomes the highest paid player in major league history when the Yankees announce the Bambino will earn $70,000 per season for the next three years. The historic deal is struck when the 'Sultan of Swat', who had asked for $100,000, meets Colonel Jacob Ruppert, the club's owner at the Ruppert Brewery in the Yorkville section of Manhattan.

1966 - Commissioner William Eckert, citing a rule that prohibits clubs from signing players during their collegiate season, voids the Braves' contract with USC standout Tom Seaver, who had signed with Atlanta for a $50,000 bonus a week earlier. The Mets will be awarded the future Hall of Famer signing rights in a lottery that includes the Phillies and Indians, who also were willing to match the Braves' terms.

1989 - At a photo session, Mets' outfielder Darryl Strawberry throws a punch at Keith Hernandez, the team's first baseman. The scuffle started over comments about salaries and results with the Straw walking out of camp.

1992 - The highest-paid player tag now belongs to Ryne Sandberg. Ryno signs a four-year contract extension worth 7.1 million dollars per season.

1995 - The Reds and Indians make the first-ever trade of replacement players. Barbaro Garbey and four others go to the Reds in return for 'future considerations'.

2001 - Rusty Greer, now the Rangers' new leadoff hitter due to the A-Rod deal, signs a $21.8 million, three-year contract extension with Texas. The .307 career hitting outfielder could make as much $36 million with incentives and options.

2005 - Wearing their regular-season home uniforms instead of the traditional batting-practice spring training jerseys, the Nationals in their first game ever beat the Mets in the exhibition opener at Space Coast Stadium in Viera, Florida, 5-3. The first and last games the Expos played, before moving from Montreal to Washington to become the Nats, were also against Mets.

2005 - In a Capitol Rotunda ceremony, with legislators from both the House and Senate and baseball commissioner Bud Selig in attendance, President George W. Bush awards the nation’s highest honor, the Congressional Gold Medal, posthumously to Jackie Robinson's widow. Rachel, the widow of the courageous ball player, accepts the award for her late husband who died in 1972.

2005 - With hundreds of Red Sox Nation citizens in attendance on the south lawn, President George W. Bush praises the team spirit and winning style of the 2004 World Champions during a White House ceremony. Fall Classic hero and Bush supporter Curt Schilling gives the former owner of the Texas Rangers a white baseball jersey emblazoned with the forty-third Chief Executive’s name and the number 43.

2007 - Michael Young signs an $80 million, five-year contract extension offered by the Rangers. The deal, which keeps the three-time All-Star shortstop with Texas through the 2013 season, is the second-largest in franchise history, eclipsed only by the $252 million, 10-year deal Alex Rodriguez free-agent signing in December 2000.

2007 - In Atlanta, five Bluffton University baseball players and the driver and his wife are killed in a chartered bus accident at Interstate 75 and Northside Drive. The players, Zach Arend, David Betts, Scott Harmon, Cody Holp, and Tyler Williams, were en route to Sarasota, Florida, to play a twin bill with Eastern Mennonite University before heading to participate in the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers.

2012 - In the first change to the MLB playoff structure since the 1995 season, when wild-card teams were first introduced, a new one-game, wild-card round will be added in each league between the teams with the best records who are not division winners. The new post-season system, which would have allowed the Red Sox and the Braves to avoid their historic collaspes last season, increases the reward of a winning a division title, but opens the door of the possibility of a third-place team winning the World Series.

2017 - The Chicago White Sox signed Jake Dunning as a free agent.

On March 3 in Baseball History...

1953 - The Boston Braves, owners of the Milwaukee minor league franchise, block the Browns' attempt to shift their franchise to Milwaukee. Lou Perini, Braves owner, invokes his territorial privilege, stating he has not been offered enough for the rights.

1956 - In an effort to keep the Giants in New York, Manhattan Borough President Hulan Jack makes plans for a new 110,000-seat stadium over the New York Central railroad tracks, on a 470,000-foot site stretching from 60th to 72nd streets on Manhattan's West Side. The estimated cost of $75M for the stadium eventually dooms the project and will be a major factor in Horace Stoneham's decision to move to San Francisco.

1959 -The winning entry in the Giants’ Name-the-Park contest is Candlestick Park, reflecting the shape of the the rocks found in the area known as Candlestick Point. The ballpark, initially called Bay View Stadium, will be the first stadium to be built entirely of reinforced concrete.

1967 - The White Sox are given permission to use a partial designated hitter in spring training. With the home club's permission, each team will be allowed to use a designated pinch-hitter twice in the same game.

1969 - The Washington Post reports the Global League has failed to reach an agreement with any television network. The lack of a TV deal appears to have derailed the reality of the proposed third major league coming into existence.

1984 - Peter Ueberroth is elected baseball's sixth commissioner, replacing Bowie Kuhn as the major league's top executive. The former L.A. Olympic president will take office on October 1 and will receive compensation of $450,000, an amount that is nearly double his predecessor's salary.

1987 - Danny Kaye, the original owner of the Mariners along with his partner Lester Smith from 1977 to 1981, dies of heart failure. The 74-year old entertainer was a life-long fan of the Dodgers, recording a hit tune entitled The D-O-D-G-E-R-S Song which detailed a fictitious encounter with the rivals Giants during the actual 1962 pennant race.

1987 - Ray Dandridge, a legendary third baseman from the Negro Leagues, is the only player elected to the Hall of Fame by the Special Veterans Committee.

1988 - Upset by a practical joke played by teammate Jesse Orosco, Dodger slugger Kirk Gibson walks out of camp for a day. The southpaw reliever had put eyeblack on Gibson's cap.

1997 - In a controversial deal, the Yankees sign a 10-year contract with Adidas. The licensing agreement with the popular sportswear company puts team owner George Steinbrenner at odds with the baseball establishment.

1998 - Larry Doby, the A.L.'s first black player, is elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame along with former A.L. President Lee MacPhail. Also chosen by the Veterans Committee are Negro League pitcher Bullet Joe Rogan and turn-of-the-century shortstop Gorgeous George Davis.

2006 - In the opening game of the inaugural World Baseball Classic, South Korean hurlers Jae-Weong Seo and Chan Ho Park combine to blank Taiwan, 2-0. The first game of the 16-nation tournament is played before a disappointing crowd of only 5,193 fans at Tokyo Dome.

2008 - Noah Lowry throws 24 pitches before a batter takes a swing in the Giants' 6-4 loss to Texas. The 28-year old right-hander, who goes through the order once without an official at-bat being recorded, a combination of walks and sacrifice flies, issues nine base-on-balls to the first 12 Rangers he faces.

2012 - The Padres sign Cameron Maybin to a five-year contract extension. The new undisclosed deal for the 24-year old outfielder has been widely reported to be worth $25 million for five years with an another $7 million possible an option year in 2017.

2015 - During five exhibition contests played in Arizona and Florida, baseball introduces its new pace of play initiatives designed to make the games shorter in duration. The new rules, which will be broken in slowly before players begin to be penalized, includes having batters keeping one foot in the batter’s box after taking a pitch, and the use of a clock to make innings start more punctually.

2015 - The Chicago White Sox released Tony Campana.

2016 - The San Diego Padres signed Matt Thornton as a free agent.

2016 - Experts announce they have verified the legitimacy of seven identical Ty Cobb cards from the printing period of 1909 to 1911, bringing the total number of the rare card known to exist to 22. The cards, which have a picture of the 'Georgia Peach' on the front, with the words 'Ty Cobb – King of the smoking tobacco world' on the back, were found in a paper bag mixed in with trash by relatives, who were cleaning the dilapidated house that belonged to their great-grandfather.

2017 - The Chicago White Sox released Brett Lawrie.

1907 - A judgment of $52,000 is awarded to the Baltimore club from Brooklyn. When Baltimore left the N.L. in 1903, Brooklyn agreed to pay $40,000 for the franchise but never did. The award includes interest.

1912 - With the shanties torn down and the garbage pits filled in the Pigtown section in Brooklyn, Charles Ebbets breaks ground for his team’s new ballpark. The Dodgers new home will be named for its owner after a reporter at the ceremony suggested the idea to Charley.

1913 - The Yankees become the first team to train outside of the United States when they start spring training in Bermuda. The team's island ballpark in Hamilton is a converted cricket field, and most of their competition is provided by the Skeeters, a local team from New Jersey.

1919 - Giants' manager John McGraw sells Slim Sallee to the Reds, but the team will buy the southpaw back next year. During his five seasons with New York, 'Scatter' compiles a 42-23 (.646) record along with an ERA of 2.26.

1921 - Twelve-year Red Sox veteran outfielder Harry Hooper is traded to the White Sox for outfielder Nemo Leibold and Shano Collins.

1948 - Stan Musial ends his hold out signing a contract for $31,000 with the Cardinals.

1976 - Due to the intervention of San Francisco mayor George Moscone, the Giants will stay in the City by the Bay. In a last minute deal, the Stoneham family sells the team to Bob Lurie and Bud Herseth for $8 million instead of the Labbat's Brewery which had planned to move the Giants to Canada.

1984 - The Special Veterans Committee selecst two outstanding defensive players, Pee Wee Reese (.269 - 16 seasons with Dodgers) and Rick Ferrell (.281 - 18 seasons w/Browns, Red Sox and Senators) to be members of Baseball's Hall of Fame.

1995 - The Chicago White Sox signed Todd Rizzo as a free agent

2004 - Commissioner Bud Selig announces major league baseball will celebrate "Jackie Robinson Day" in every ballpark on April 15, the anniversary of the debut of the first black player in the major leagues. Jackie's number (42) was retired for all time in a ceremony at Shea Stadium in April of 1997 to mark the 50th anniversary of Robinson's achievement.

2004 - The Chicago White Sox released Robert Person.

2004 - Chris Singleton contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates voided.

2006 - Prior to the exhibition game scheduled to be played at Legends Field in Tampa, the Yankees, using a sign outside the park, apologize to the fans for the absence of Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Johnny Damon and Bernie Williams due to the World Baseball Classic. in August 2004, George Steinbrenner had abstained when the owners approved the World Cup styled tournament at the urging of baseball commissioner Bud Selig.

2008 - Replacing the $3,925,000, one-year contract signed in January, Brad Hawpe and the Rockies agree to a $17,425,000, three-year deal. The Colorado right fielder becomes the team's fourth young player of the National League champs to receive a long term deal from the club.

2012 - A swarm of bees, that moved down the right field line and settle near the Giants' dugout behind first base causes two sections of fans to be evacuated and results in a 41-minute delay of the Giants' split squad game against the Diamondbacks. The Salt River Fields grounds crew uses a combination of lemonade and cotton candy obtained from the concession stand to lure the buzzing insects away from fans and players.

2012 - The Baltimore Orioles signed Miguel Gonzalez as a free agent.

2014 - The Baltimore Orioles signed Johan Santana as a free agent.

On March 5 in Baseball History...

1922 - Babe Ruth signs a three-year contract with the Yankees for $52,000 per season, the unheard sum of $1,000 a week. In November, Yankees owner Colonel Jacob Ruppert has the "Bambino' agree to a contract addendum which limits the slugger's outrageous off-field behavior, including the excessive consumption of alcohol and late-night carousing.

1936 - The Cardinals, without the holdout Dean brothers, lose to the Cuban All-Stars in Cuba. Luis Tiant Sr., the dad of a future major league pitcher, is the starting pitcher for the home team.

1958 - Trying to beat a 12:30 am curfew Duke Snider, Johnny Podres and Don Zimmer suffer minor injuries in an auto mishap in Vero Beach. With prior crashes involving Roy Campanella and Jim Gilliam, the car accident is the third involving the Dodgers within the last two months.

1962 - Gene Freese suffers a severely fractured ankle in the team's first intrasquad game that will keep him out of action until mid-August. The Reds' third baseman, who played an important role in Cincinnati's National League championship last season, will never regain the form he displayed during the pennant drive.

1964 - Atlanta's Mayor Ivan Allen, Jr. claims to have a verbal agreement with a major league team which promises to move to the Peach State if a stadium is ready by next year. The next day the Board of Alderman approves a $15-million stadium.

1966 - Marvin Miller, assistant to the President of United Steelworkers, is elected as the first full-time executive director of the Major League Players' Association by the player representatives.

1972 - Jim Fregosi, obtained by the Mets from the Angels in the off-season for Nolan Ryan, breaks his right thumb during a spring training workout. The all-star infielder will suffer through an agonizing season batting only .232 in 101 games, after being touted as the team's solution to its revolving door at third base.

1973 - Yankee teammates Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich announce they have traded families including their wives, children and even the dogs. The swap, that began last Fall, will work well for Peterson, who will become married to his best friend's former wife with whom he will have four children, than it does for Kekich, whose relationship with Marilyn Peterson is short-lived.

1982 - Needing just three wins to reach 300 career victories, 43-year old Gaylord Perry signs a one-year free-agent contract with Seattle. The 'Ancient Mariner' will reach the milestone in May when he goes the distance to beat New York at the Kingdome, 7-3.

1986 - The Braves and Brewers swap backstops with Atlanta acquiring Ted Simmons from Milwaukee in exchange for Rick Cerone and a pair of minor leaguers, David Clay and Flavio Alfaro. The offensively talented Simmons will spend three years with his new club before retiring after the 1988 season with a life-time .285 batting average.

1996 - Fiery manager Earl Weaver, who had a .583 winning percentage in 17 seasons as manager of the Orioles, and Jim Bunning, who won 100 games and pitched no-hitters in both leagues, are elected into the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee. Also chosen are turn-of-the-century manager Ned Hanlon and Negro Leagues pitcher Bill Foster.

2002 - Joining Phil Cavarretta (1954 Cubs) and Alvin Dark (1978 Padres), Red Sox skipper Joe Kerrigan becomes the third manager to be fired during spring training. The team's former pitching coach, who guided the club to a 17-26 record after taking over for Jimy Williams last August, had signed a multi-year contract to be Boston's field boss with then-GM Dan Duquette, but was not favored by the new ownership that took control last month.

2003 - Although not agreeing to ban ephedra, a memo is sent to all major leaguers by the players' union strongly recommending players "be extremely reluctant to use any products" containing the substance. The diet supplement, which is available without a prescription, has been linked to the spring training death of Orioles' pitcher, Steve Belcher.

2005 - A new ownership group, headed by real estate tycoon Lewis N. Wolff and businessman John J. Fisher, takes control of the A’s, after purchasing the franchise from Steve Schott and Ken Hoffman. Oakland's four-year playoff streak, fueled by Billy Beane's “Moneyball" approach, had come to an end in 2004, and the former owners were anxious to sell the club they bought from the estate of Walter A. Haas, Jr. in 1995.

2008 - The Chicago White Sox signed Dewayne Wise as a free agent.

2013 - The Washington Nationals released Will Ohman.

On March 6 in Baseball History...

1884 - High winds tear off the roof of the Polo Grounds’ grandstands, but the ballpark will be ready the Gothams' National League home opener on May 1. The team, who will become known as the Giants, will win the first dozen games they play on the Southeast Diamond of the facility.

1906 - Rookie owner Charles W. Murphy puts the last pieces of a Cubs dynasty in place, trading rookie infielder Hans Lobert and lefthander Jake Weimer to the Cincinnati Reds for third baseman Harry Steinfeldt. Not a heavy hitter, Steinfeldt completes the Tinker-Evers-Chance infield with more than adequate defense.

1907 - Phillies' owner A.J. Reach and John Rogers are acquitted of damages resulting from the 1903 National League Park disaster. A balcony had collapsed at the Broad Street and Lehigh Avenue ballpark killing 12 and leaving 232 fans injured.

1922 - Babe Ruth becomes the highest paid player in history when he inks a three-year deal with the Yankees worth $52,000, more than three times as much as teammate Home Run Baker, the second best paid major leaguer. The 'Sultan of Swat' will be worthy of his contract, hitting 122 home runs and earning MVP honors in team's first World Championship season in 1923.

1923 - The Cardinals announce players will wear numbers on their uniforms. The digits will correspond to the player's place in the batting order.

1938 - The Phillies trade first baseman Dolph Camilli to the Dodgers for utility player Eddie Morgan and $45,000. The heavy-hitting infielder will spend six seasons in Brooklyn, having his best year in 1941 when he wins the National League MVP after leading the circuit in home runs and RBIs.

1945 - In some of the fiercest fighting of World War II, Harry O'Neill is killed in the battle for Iwo Jima. In 1939, the fallen Marine played one game in the major leagues appearing with the A's as a catcher.

1948 - The Braves acquire All-Star second baseman Eddie Stanky from the Dodgers for Bama Rowell and $60,000. The hard-nosed infielder will play a pivotal role in Boston's National League championship this season.

1951 - Charlie Brown, who made his debut in Charles Schultz’s Peanut comic strip in last October, appears in his first baseball game. The perennial loser, who served as his team's pitcher and manager, usually fielded the following lineup: first baseman - Shermy, second baseman - Linus, third baseman - Pig-pen, shortstop - Snoopy, right fielder - Lucy, center fielder -Patty, left fielder -Violet, and catcher - Schroeder.

1962 - St. Louis voters approve a bond issue that will fund the improvements necessary to build a new downtown stadium for the Cardinals.

1971 - Joe Cronin, the AL president, gives into A's owner Charlie Finley's request to allow three balls, rather than four, to constitute a base on balls during an exhibition game against the Brewers. The experiment, designed to add offense and speed up the game, proves to be tedious for both teams when 19 walks are issued as well as six homers being drilled during the 13-9 spring training victory for Oakland.

1973 - In a spring training game against the Pirates, Larry Hisle becomes the first designated hitter in major league history. The contention that the new American League rule will add more offense to the game is proven when the Twins' DH hits two homers and drives in seven runs.

1976 - Prior to the return of natural grass that will be in place for Opening Day, approximately a thousand people show up at Comiskey Park to get a piece of the 18,000 square feet of artificial turf covering the infield. New White Sox owner Bill Veeck, sensing a lack of public interest during the work stoppage, decided to stage the promotion to spark interest in the upcoming season, reminding fans, "when you go to the ballpark, you are entitled to the smell of freshly cut grass".

1985 - The Special Veterans Committee elects Enos Slaughter and Arky Vaughan to the Hall of Fame. Slaughter batted .300 over 19 seasons. His base running skills were legendary, despite just 71 career steals. Vaughan batted .300 or better 12 times in 14 seasons, including 1935, when he led the N.L. in batting average, slugging, and on-base percentage with the Pirates.

1987 - Free agent Andre Dawson signs a blank contract to join the Cubs. The former player for the Expos will win the National League MVP making him a bargain at $500,000, the amount Chicago decided to pay the All-Star outfielder.

2001 - The 1960 World Series hero, former Pirate second baseman Bill Mazeroski, is elected by the Veterans' Committee into the Hall of Fame along with Hilton Smith, a pitching standout with the Kansas City Monarchs.

2001 - The dedication of two sculptures, located 60 feet-six inches apart, depicting Johnny Podres pitching to Roy Campanella during the seventh game of the 1955 World Series, takes place on the south lawn of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. The life-sized bronze statues, designed by figurative sculptor Stanley Bleifeld, were donated by an ardent Dodger fan Sheldon Fireman.

2005 - Making her debut with John Sterling on WCBS-AM (880), the radio flagship of the Yankees, Suzyn Waldman becomes the first woman in big league history to be a full-time color commentator. The former radio-talk host on WFAN, the first all-sports radio station in the country, was also the first female to broadcast on a nationally baseball telecast as well as the first to provide local TV (Yankees) major league play-by-play.

2006 - The Chicago White Sox signed Hideo Nomo as a free agent.

2009 - The Oakland Athletics signed Orlando Cabrera as a free agent.

2013 - The Pittsburgh Pirates released Aaron Poreda.

2016 -  The Chicago White Sox signed Austin Jackson as a free agent.

On March 7 in Baseball History...

1903 - In the first trade under the A.L./N.L. peace treaty, the Giants send their 1902 part-time manager Heinie Smith to Detroit for second baseman Kid Gleason, who is immediately moved to Philadelphia, where he will end a 20-year playing career.

1914 - In the last inning of an intrasquad exhibition game of the International League’s Baltimore Orioles, the recently-signed George Herman Ruth Jr. hits his first professional home run, a 400 foot shot at the Cape Fear Fairgrounds in Fayetteville. A state marker claims the famous moniker 'Babe' was given to the 19 year-old during his stay in this North Carolina city when his teammates teased him about being adopted by the team's manager Jack Dunn, who legally became the parent of St. Mary’s Industrial School to keep him on the club.

1923 - The New England American Legion appeals to Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis to discontinue morning games on Memorial Day. The request is turned down.

1924 - Reds manager Pat Moran dies of Bright's Disease and is replaced within minutes by coach Jack Hendricks. Moran had become ill on March 1 on a train to spring training in Orlando, Florida, but did not see a physician for three days. By then, his liver and kidneys had all but ceased to function.

1941 - Believed to be the first time that players don protective headgear, Pee Wee Reese and Ducky Medwick wear plastic inserts inside their caps during a spring exhibition game. The Dodger teammates had both missed weeks of playing time after being beaned by a pitch during the 1940 season.

1955 - Commissioner Ford Frick announces he favors the legalization of the spitter.

1956 - Still seeking workman's compensation coverage, the players accept the owners' position on the World Series television deal and the proposed minimum salary structure.

1979 - The Special Veterans Committee selects former center fielder Hack Wilson, who compiled a .307 batting average playing mostly for the Giants and the Cubs during his 12-year major league career, for the Hall of Fame. The committee also choses former National League president Warren Giles, who spent 18 years in the post, for induction in Cooperstown this summer.

1995 - The Veterans Committee selects former players Richie Ashburn‚ Vic Willis‚ and Leon Day, and past president of the National League, William Hulbert, for induction to the Hall of Fame. Day, a Negro League right hander, who played in Baltimore with the Black Sox and the Elite Giants and with the Brooklyn and Newark Eagles, will be dead of a heart attack in less than a week after hearing the good news.

2001 - Bud Selig upholds the January 14 Blue Jay and White Sox trade which sent Toronto pitchers David Wells and Matt DeWitt to the White Sox in exchange for pitchers Mike Sirotka, Kevin Beirne and Mike Williams and outfielder Brian Simmons. Although, upon further medical examinations, Mike Sirotka was determined to be 'damaged goods' prior to the deal, the commissioner used a 'buyers beware' policy stating the individual club must take responsibility for the information originally used in making the transaction.

2006 - In their World Baseball Classic debut, Team USA blanks Mexico, 2-0. Home runs by Derrek Lee and Chipper Jones along with Jake Peavy and bevy of relievers combining to throw a four-hitter prove to be the difference as the United States defeats their neighbors from south of the border.

2008 - With a two-out RBI single in the ninth inning off reliever Colter Bean, Danny Sandoval spoils the Braves' bid for a spring training combined no-hitter. Atlanta uses seven hurlers beating the Indians at Winter Haven 4-1.

2008 - The Cape Cod Times reports MLB has threatened to withhold their annual grant from from the Cape Cod League if the six teams in the 10-team circuit sharing nicknames with big league, such as the Chatham Athletics, do not purchase all future uniforms and souvenir merchandise from licensed vendors, a more expensive option. The deadline has been extended until March 21, to give league officials more time to resolve the issue.

2014 - The Kansas City Royals released Brad Penny.

2018 - The Toronto Blue Jays signed Tyler Clippard as a free agent.
