On January 24 in Baseball History...

1939 - George Sisler, Eddie Collins, and Willie Keeler are elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the BBWAA. Sisler set the major league record with 257 hits in 1920 and batted .420 in 1922 on his way to a .340 career average. Collins batted an even .333 for his career and stole 744 bases as a member of four world champions. Keeler, who "hit 'em where they ain't."

1955 - In an effort to speed up the game, major league baseball announces a new rule which requires a pitcher to deliver the ball within 20 seconds after taking a pitching position.

1961 - The A's trade Whitey Herzog and Russ Snyder to the Orioles for Wayne Causey, Jim Archer, Bob Boyd and Al Pilarcik. The deal will not improve either club as both teams will finish in the second division next season.

1962 - The Southern Association, established in 1901, suspends operation due to decreasing yearly attendance. With the exception Nat Peeples, who became only black player in the league's history when he played two games with 1954 Atlanta Crackers, the circuit remained racially segregated until the end of it existence.

1973 - Warren Spahn, becoming only the sixth player elected to the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, receives 316 of the 380 (83.2%) votes cast by the BBWAA scribes. The crafty southpaw, who recorded thirteen 20-win seasons with the Braves, retired as the winningest left-handed pitcher in big league history with 363 victories.

1980 - Nelson Doubleday and Fred Wilpon purchase the Mets for an estimated $21.1 million. The price tag is the highest amount ever paid for a baseball franchise.

2001 - Believed to be an historical first, sixty-eight major league umpires participate in a pre-season session to practice calling strikes as defined by the rule book. With the help of minor leaguers wearing tapes nine inches above their belts, the men in blue get a good look at pitches, normally called balls, which now will be considered a strike as the correct interpretation of the zone will be enforced this upcoming season.

2006 - Jay Gibbons (.277, 26, 79) and the Orioles agree to a $21.1 million, four-year deal. The 28-year old outfielder, who is getting married this weekend could have taken his chances on the free agent market next season

2007 - Coming off an injured Achilles tendon, Cliff Floyd signs a very flexible deal with the Cubs, beginning with a one-year guaranteed contract for $3 million to one which could be worth as much as $17.5 million over two years. The Chicago native will give the North-siders left-handed power off the bench and is expected to platoon with Matt Murton.

2007 - The Chicago White Sox signed Darin Erstad as a free agent.

2008 - Avoiding arbitration, the Braves sign Rafael Soriano (3-3, 3.00) to a two-year deal worth $9 million. The team plans to use the relief pitcher, who had nine saves in 2007, as their closer this season.

2012 - The Oakland Athletics signed free agent pitcher Bartolo Colón to a one year, $2 million contract.

2012 - The Seattle Mariners signed Kevin Millwood as a free agent.

2013 - The Chicago White Sox claimed Zach Stewart from Pittsburgh Pirates on waivers.

2013 - The Arizona Diamondbacks traded Justin Upton and Chris Johnson to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for Martin Prado, Randall Delgado, Zeke Spruill, Nick Ahmed and Brandon Drury.

2014 - The Atlanta Braves signed Freddy Garcia as a free agent.

On January 25 in Baseball History...

1934 - Giants' manager Bill Terry wakes a sleeping giant when he jests, "Is Brooklyn still in the league?", during an interview with the New York press. The Dodgers will knock his team out of the pennant race in September.

1943 - The Boston Braves buy Lefty Gomez from the Yankees. The southpaw hurler will be released before playing a game and will sign with the Senators in May.

1945 - The Ruppert estate sells the Yankees to Dan Topping, Del Webb and Larry MacPhail for $2.8 million. Topping and Webb, who will buy out MacPhail after two years, will sell 80% of the Bronx Bombers to CBS for $11.2 million after the 1964 season.

1947 - Five players in the Class D Evangeline League who allegedly bet on the 1946 playoffs are made ineligible. Included in this group, and later reinstated, is the all-time minor league winningest pitcher, Bill Thomas (383 wins).

1949 - Lou Boudreau signs a two-year $65,000 contact with the World Champion Indians to remain the team's player-manager. The future Hall of Famer will pilot the Tribe for nine years, six as a player, will compile a 728-649 (.529) record with the club.

1966 - Due to being recently diagnosed of having three crushed vertebrae resulting from of a childhood injury, nine-year veteran infielder Tony Kubek announces his retirement rather than risk further harm to his back. During the last game of the season, the Yankees shortstop had gone 3-for-4 at Fenway Park, including a home run in the ninth inning, which will now be remembered as the 29 year old infielder's final big league at bat.

1974 - Ray Kroc, fast-food entrepreneur (McDonald's), buys the San Diego Padres for $12 million.

1978 - The San Diego Padres trade pitcher Dave Tomlin and an estimated $125,000 in cash to the Texas Rangers for aging pitcher Gaylord Perry. Perry will win the N.L. Cy Young Award with San Diego in 1978.

1980 - The Mets' new owners are formally introduced to the local media at Shea Stadium's Diamond Club. It is announced Nelson Doubleday will be the new chairman of the board, replacing the outgoing Lorinda de Roulet, who will play no role in the future of the franchise, and Fred Wilpon is named president and CEO of the club.

1983 - The White Sox trade pitchers Warren Brusstar and Steve Trout to the Cubs for Dick Tidrow and Randy Martz, shortstop Scott Fletcher, and first baseman Pat Tabler. Trout will prove to be the key player in the deal as the left-hander will post a 43-38 record during his five seasons on the north side of Chicago.

1997 - The Devil Rays sign Gregg Blosser, the organization's first player with major league experience. The former Boston Red Sox outfielder, a Florida native, will never appear in a game for Tampa Bay.

1999 - The Oakland A's sign former Yankee free-agent outfielder Tim Raines for $600,000. The 39-year old switch hitter batted .290 for the World Champs last season and has a .296 career batting average.

1999 - After being aired on WOR, Channel 9 since the team's inception in 1962, Mets games this season will broadcast by WPIX, Channel 11. The Yankees games which had been aired for nearly 50 years on Channel 11 will now be seen on Channel 5, a Fox affiliate.

2005 - Carlos Delgado (.269, 32, 99) and Florida come to terms on a four-year, $52 million contract. The 32-year old first baseman’s deal stops the intense bidding war between the Marlins, Mets, Orioles, and the Rangers for the coveted free agent.

2005 - The Atlanta Braves signed Elvis Andrus as a non-drafted free agent.

2006 - The A’s sign aging free-agent Frank Thomas to a $500,000, one-year deal. The two-time American League MVP gives Oakland the right-handed bat the team needs of in the middle of their lineup.

2007 - The New York Mets signed Scott Schoeneweis as a free agent.

2007 - Willie Randolph, who brought New York within one game of a World Series appearance, agrees to a $5.65 million, three-year deal to manage the Mets through 2008. The skipper’s new deal doubles his present salary expected this season from $700,000 to $1.4 million.

2008 - In an unusual move for the club, the Yankees, rather than waiting for a young talented player to become arbitration-eligible before negotiating a deal, offer Robinson Canó (.306, 19, 97) a six-year contract worth approximately $55 million. The 25-year old second baseman will become eligible for free agency after the 2011 season if the team doesn't exercise its option in each of the following two seasons.

2008 - After seeing Torii Hunter and Carlos Silva lost to free agency and being subjected to non-stop reports of a possible trade of Johan Santana, Twins fans are delighted when the club announces Justin Morneau and Michael Cuddyer have both signed long term deals to stay in Minnesota. The 2006 AL MVP gets the richest contract in franchise history, $80 million for six-years and his teammate, Cuddyer, inks an agreement worth $24 million over three years.

2012 - Jorge Posada (.273, 275, 1,065) at a SRO Yankee Stadium news conference, announces his retirement after 17 major league seasons. The 40-year old five-time All-Star catcher joins Bernie Williams and Andy Pettitte in retirement, leaving Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera remaining on the team from the core group that led New York to four World Series titles in five years from 1996-2000.

2013 - The Chicago White Sox signed free agent pitcher Matt Lindstrom to a 2-year/ $6.3 million contract.

2017 - The Cleveland Indians signed Austin Jackson as a free agent.

On January 26 in Baseball History...

1932 - William K. Wrigley, owner of the Cubs since 1919, dies and is buried on Catalina Island. His only son, Philip K. Wrigley, inherits the Cubs and the minor league Los Angeles Angels.

1951 - The baseball writers vote Mel Ott and Jimmie Foxx into the Hall of Fame. Ott hit 511 home runs, batted .304, and managed the Giants from 1942 to 1948.

1957 - Lou Perini is replaced by Joe Cairnes as president of the Braves. Perini, the owner of the club, will be best remembered as the person responsible for moving the franchise from Boston to Milwaukee in 1953.

1960 - Due to his fear of flying, Red Sox outfielder Jackie Jensen announces his retirement. The 1958 MVP will later change his mind.

1989 - The rules initiated last season to make balk calls more uniform throughout baseball are rescinded and are replaced by the pre-1988 rules. The wording change from 'a complete stop' to 'a single complete and discernible stop, with both feet on the ground' had caused umpires to call an unprecedented amount of balks in both the American and National League.

1990 - Red Sox hire Elaine Weddington as the assistant general manager of the team making her the highest ranking black female executive in major league baseball.

2001 - The June 8-10 (Arlington) and June 15-17 (Houston) interleague games between the Astros and Rangers will be known as the Lone Star Series. It will be first time ever the two Texas teams have ever played one another during the regular season.

2002 - The Mariners trade David Bell to the Giants for infielder Desi Relaford. The veteran third baseman became expendable when Seattle acquired Jeff Cirillo from the Rockies earlier in the off-season.

2005 - After failing to sign free agent first baseman Carlos Delgado, the Mets quickly fill the void at first base by trading minor league prospect Ian Bladergroen and a player to be named (or cash) to Boston for Gold Glover Doug Mientkiewicz. The Red Sox, who acquired the 30-year-old infielder from the Twins at the non-waiver trade deadline to solidify their defense, will use heavy hitting, light fielding Kevin Millar at first.

2009 - The Yankees sign starting pitcher Andy Pettitte to a $5.5 million, one-year deal, less than half the club’s original $10 million offer. The 36-year-old southpaw, however, can make an additional $4.5 million based on innings pitched and another $2 million dependent on days spent on the active roster.

2009 - Avoiding salary arbitration, the Royals and Zack Greinke agree to a $38 million, four-year contract. The 25-year old right-hander, grateful to the club for their understanding of his social disorder which caused him to bolt from spring training two years ago, posted a 13-10 record last season with the best ERA (3.47) by a Kansas City starter in 11 years.

2010 - Jon Garland and the Padres agree to a $5.3 million, one-year deal that includes a mutual option for $6.75 million in 2011. Along with Chris Young and Kevin Correia, the 30-year old right-hander, known for his durability, will play a major role in San Diego’s rotation.

2010 - Ben Sheets and the A's come to terms on a $10 million, one-year contract making the free-agent right-hander the team’s second-highest paid player behind third baseman Eric Chavez. The 31-year-old, recovering from elbow surgery that caused him to miss all of last season, compiled an 86-83 record along with a 3.72 ERA in his first eight seasons in the major leagues, all with Milwaukee.

2012 - Prince Fielder and the Tigers agree to a nine-year, $214 million contract, a move necessitated with the AL Central champion's loss of Victor Martinez, who could miss the entire season after tearing his left ACL while conditioning in the off-season. As a child, Prince hit fence-clearing drives when taking batting practice with his dad, Cecil, who hit 51 home runs playing with Detroit in 1990.

2012 - The Mets announce that John Franco, the club's all-time leader in saves and games pitched, will be inducted into the team's Hall of Fame. The All-Star closer, who has the second longest tenure in franchise history behind Ed Kranepool, compiled 276 saves of his career 424 saves, the most by any left-handed reliever in baseball history, with New York.

2013 - The Nationals announce that William Howard Taft has been named to become the fifth participant in the team's iconic Presidents Race, a Washington, D.C. ballpark tradition since 2006. The 27th President of the United States will compete against the Rushmore Four, George, Tom, Abe and Teddy.

2014 - The Milwaukee Brewers signed Matt Garza as a free agent.

2016 - The New York Mets signed free agent outfielder Yoenis Cespedes to a 3 year/$75 million contract..

On January 27 in Baseball History...

1933 - Joe Judge, who compiled a .299 lifetime BA in his 18 seasons with the Senators is released by the team and will sign with Dodgers. The veteran first baseman will hit just .214 in 42 games with Brooklyn before getting released again and moving back to the American League with Boston, where he'll retire next season.

1937 - Crosley Field’s home plate area is covered by 21 feet of water with the lower grandstand of the Redlegs’ home being totally submerged as Cincinnati experiences the worst flood in its history when the flood-prone Mill Creek overflows its banks. As a publicity stunt, Reds pitcher Lee Grissom and the team's traveling secretary, John McDonald are photographed as they entered the ballpark over the left field fence and rowed to the area of the pitcher's mound.

1943 - The Reds trade pitcher Paul Derringer to the Cubs for cash. The 36-year old right hander, known as Oom Paul, will post a 10-14 record with an ERA of 3.57 for Chicago.

1944 - Lou Perini, Guido Rugo and Joe Maney, known as the 'Three Steam Shovels' due to their ties to the construction industry, gain control of the Boston Braves. The new ownership will immediately relieve Casey Stengel of his duties as manager of the second-division place club, who finished in sixth place with a record of 67-85.

1949 - Fred Saigh gains ninety percent control of the Cardinals when he buys out the interest of Robert Hennegan. After just two years of ownership, Hennegan makes a tidy profit of $866,000.

1956 - The New York football Giants switches their NFL home games to Yankee Stadium fueling speculation the baseball Giants will also be leaving the Polo Grounds.

1963 - The Hall of Fame Special Veterans Committee votes in Sam Rice, Eppa Rixey, Elmer Flick, and John Clarkson.

1966 - Wisconsin State Circuit Court Judge Elmer W. Roller rules that the Braves must stay in Milwaukee or else the National League must promise Wisconsin an expansion team for the 1966 season.

1982 - The Cubs trade Ivan DeJesus to the Phillies in exchange for Larry Bowa and a promising youngster named Ryne Sandberg. Dallas Green, the team's new GM, had seen the potential of the future Hall of Fame second baseman while managing in Philadelphia.

1997 - After stints with the Rangers and Red Sox, Jose Canseco returns to his first major league team when Boston trades the slugger to the A's for pitcher John Wasdin and cash. The 32-year old DH/outfielder will bat .235 and hit 23 home runs for Oakland, and Boston's new right hander will post a 4-6 record with a 4.40 ERA.

1999 - Former Mets infielder Carlos Baerga signs a one-year free-agent contract with the Cardinals. The second baseman, who did not met the expectations of the fans in New York, will be released by the Cardinals during spring training and will sign with Reds, who will also release him in the beginning of June.

2005 - Lance Berkman (.316, 30, 106), the team’s 2004 team MVP, avoids arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $10.5 million deal with the Astros. The 28-year-old All-Star outfielder suffered a serious off-season knee injury (anterior cruciate ligament tear) playing flag football.

The fireballer’s previous contract gave him the right to terminate the deal once he became eligible for salary arbitration.

2006 - The multi-player deal between Boston and Cleveland, held up by Guillermo Mota’s physical results, the delay of another trade in which the Indians get Jason Michaels from the Phillies, and Commissioner Bud Selig's needed approval of any transaction worth at least $1 million, is finally completed.     2006 - Nobuhiko Matsunaka agrees to a seven-year contract making it the longest deal ever signed by a Japanese player in professional baseball. The 32-year-old Softbank Hawks slugger will earn an estimated 500 million yen a year plus additional incentives based on performance

2006 - Featuring a more traditional look, the Royals unveiled their new 2006 uniforms with the two home uniforms featuring the word "Royals," in script while the two road uniforms will have "Kansas City", also in script, on the front. The new uniform will return to the crown logo on the sleeves, in place of the circular logo used during the past few seasons.

2009 - Ubaldo Jimenez agrees to a four-year guaranteed deal worth $10 million which could be increased to $22 million if the Rockies exercises their options for the in 2013 and 2014.     2009 - John Updike, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and life-long Red Sox fan, dies of lung cancer at the age of 76.     2010 - Joining Honus Wagner, Willie Stargell, and former teammate Roberto Clemente, former Pirates second baseman Bill Mazeroski will have a statue of himself placed outside of PNC Park. The 12-foot statue, designed by Pittsburgh sculptor Susan Wagner, will depict the Hall of Fame infielder rounding second base, with his batting helmet raised high in his right hand, after hitting the walk-off homer that beat the Yankees in the 1960 Fall Classic, commemorating the only Game 7 World Series-ending round-tripper in the history of the game.

2012 - The Philadelphia Phillies signed Juan Pierre as a free agent.

2012 - Ron Washington is honored with the C.I. Taylor Award as the American League's top manager by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, part of the organization's Legacy Awards.     On January 28 in Baseball History...

1949 -  Monte Irvin becomes the first African-American player, along with hurler Ford Smith, to sign with the Giants. Although the 29-year old outfielder will play only five full seasons in the major leagues, the former Newark Eagles standout will be elected to the Hall of Fame in 1973, primarily for his outstanding play in the Negro Leagues.

1953 - Cardinal owner, Fred Saigh, is found guilty of income tax evasion and is sentenced to a fifteen-month jail term.

1958 - The Tigers trade Jim Finigan and $25,000 to the Giants for Gail Harris and Ozzie Virgil.

1961 - The International League Board of Directors vote to move the Montreal franchise to Syracuse, New York.

1968 - Goose Goslin and Kiki Cuyler are admitted to the Hall of Fame by unanimous vote of the Special Veterans Committee. Goslin was a career .316 hitter who played in four World Series. Cuyler was a .321 career hitter with four stolen base crowns.

1982 - The Angels trade outfielder Dan Ford to the Orioles for third baseman Doug DeCinces and minor leaguer Jeff Schneider.

1986 - The Rangers sign 34-year old free-agent catcher Darrell Porter to a one-year contract. The bespectacled backup backstop will hit .253 during his tenure in Texas, his last two years in the majors.

2005 - Recently traded first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz, who caught and kept the ball used to make the last out giving the Red Sox their first World championship in 86 years, will lend his souvenir to his former club. The historic horsehide, which Boston claims belongs to the team, will be encased within a plaque and will become part of the victory tour which includes World Series trophy.

2008 - The Rays and James Shields (12-8, 3.85) finalize a $11.25 million, four-year deal which includes options that could make the contract worth nearly $38 million over the next seven years. The 26-year-old right-hander was second in the big leagues in strikeout-to-walk ratio - an impressive 184 to 36 trailing only C.C. Sabathia (209 to 37).

2008 - The Chicago White Sox traded David Aardsma to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for Willy Mota and Miguel Socolovich.

2009 - Avoiding salary arbitration, the Angels and 28-year-old infielder Maicer Izturis come to terms on a one-year deal worth $1.6 million. The Halos' opening-day shortstop missed 61 games last season after tearing a ligament in his left thumb in August and straining his lower back in May, necessitating the first of his two stints on the disabled list.

2009 - Aaron Heilman is traded for the second time this offseason when the Mariners swap the 30-year old right hander to the Cubs for utility infielder Ronny Cedeno and southpaw Garrett Olson. Seven weeks ago, the Mets dealt the much-maligned reliever to Seattle as part of a three-team trade.

2009 - David Weathers decides to stay with Cincinnati after signing a one-year deal that guarantees the 39 -year old reliever $3.9 million. A member of the Reds pitching staff for the past four seasons, the right hander compiled a 4-6 record posting a 3.25 ERA in 72 appearances from the bullpen last season.

2011 - The Twins plan to remove the 14 pine trees located behind the center field wall that were planted last season to be the batter's eye at Target Field. The evergreens, which possibly will be relocated inside the newly opened ballpark, made it difficult for hitters to pick up the ball from the pitcher's hand due to the movement of the conifers in the wind and the shadows cast during afternoon contests.

2015 - The Chicago White Sox signed Gordon Beckham as a free agent.

2016 - The Chicago White Sox signed Maikel Cleto as a free agent.

2016 - The Houston Astros signed Doug Fister as a free agent.

2016 -  In an Oklahoma City ceremony, Cy Young Award recipient Dallas Keuchel receives the Warren Spahn Award, an honor given baseball's top left-handed pitcher. The 28 year-old southpaw, who posted a 20-8 record along with an ERA of 2.48 for the Astros this season, is the first Oklahoman to collect the prestigious pitching prize named in honor of the crafty left-hander.

On January 29 in Baseball History...

1936 - The result of the first Hall of Fame elections is announced with Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, and Walter Johnson being selected by the BBWAA or by a special Veterans Committee, made up of individuals with more knowledge 19th century standouts. The honorees will have to wait until 1939 for the enshrinement, since the museum in Cooperstown has not yet been built.

1948 - Commissioner Happy Chandler fines the Yankees, Cubs, and Phillies $500 each for signing high school players.

1949 - The Pittsburgh Pirates purchase Murry Dickson from the Cardinals for $125,000. During his five-year tenure in Pittsburgh, the 31-year old right-hander will have a 20-win season for the Bucs, but will also post three 20-loss seasons for the hapless team.

1951 - Baseball signs a six-year All-Star Game pact for TV-radio rights for $6 million. A number of owners criticize lame-duck Commissioner Happy Chandler, believing that in a couple of years, the broadcast rights would be worth much more than $1 million per annum.

1957 - Due to the start of coast to coast travel, major league baseball considers a plan creating a player pool to be used in the event of a plane crash.

1958 - Three-time MVP Stan Musial inks a the first six-figure contract in National League history when he signs a $100,000 deal with the Cardinals. The 37 year-old St. Louis legend, who won his seventh battle title batting .354 last season, makes it clear he would have signed for less, but the $20,000 increase is the reward that the team thought he deserved.

1958 - Driving home from his liquor store in Harlem, Roy Campanella breaks his neck when his car hit a telephone pole in an early morning auto accident on Long Island. The 36-year old Dodger catcher, who has won three MVP awards (1951, '53, '55) will be paralyzed for the remainder of his life.

1960 - The family feud continues in Chicago when a court rules in favor of Charles Comiskey's sister, Dorothy Rigney, allowing her to sell her White Sox shares to Bill Veeck. Comiskey had brought suit in order to gain control of the club.

1961 - Max Carey and the late Bill Hamilton and the are voted into the Hall of Fame by the veterans committee, a group that considers players for induction who have been out of the game for 30 years. The former fleet-footed outfielders both own stolen base records with 'Sliding Billy' swiping 115 bases with the Phillies in 1891 for the all-time season mark, and Carey, who at the time of his selection is National League career leader with 738 SBs playing for the Pirates and Dodgers.

1967 -  Branch Rickey and Lloyd Waner are elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by a unanimous vote of the Special Veterans Committee.

1981 - Jerry Reinsdorf and Eddie Einhorn buy the White Sox from a group headed by owner Bill Veeck. Just a few weeks later, the new ownership proves it is serious about winning by signing coveted free-agent catcher Carlton Fisk.

1988 - Kirk Gibson signs a three-year deal with the Dodgers. The former Tiger outfielder is the only one of the seven no-risk free agents to go to a new team.

1989 - After nine years of use, the game-winning RBI stat is dropped. Mets' first baseman Keith Hernandez will remain the all-time leader with a 129 GW RBIs.

1995 - Deion Sanders' appearance with the NFL San Francisco 49ers in Superbowl XXIX at Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami makes the cornerback the first athlete to have played in both a Super Bowl and a World Series. In 1992, ‘Neon Deion’ played left field for the Braves in the 1992 Fall Classic against the Toronto Blue Jays.

1999 - Citing shoulder injuries, five-time all-star Jimmy Key retires from baseball. The 37-year old lefty appeared in the playoffs with all the teams he played which included the Blue Jays, Yankees and Orioles.

2002 - The Astros sign Lance Berkman (.331, 34, 126) to a $10.5 million, three-year contract. The All star outfielder had 94 extra-base hits last season, the most ever by a switch-hitter in major league history.

2006 - In a surprising development, former Mets backstop Mike Piazza and the National League West champion Padres come to terms on a one-year, $2 million deal. The 37-year-old likely Hall of Famer, who will behind the plate for 90 to 100 games this season in addition to playing some first base and DHing in inter-league contests, was thought to be headed to an American League team to be a full time designated hitter.

2008 - Baseball announces the annual Hall of Fame Game played since 1940 will end after the June 16th Cooperstown contest between the Cubs and Padres. With the 68-year tradition ending, there are no longer any major league exhibition games played during the season.

2008 - A conditional 4-for-1 trade with the Twins brings Johan Santana to the Mets in exchange for pitching prospects Philip Humber, Kevin Mulvey and Deolis Guerra and fleet-footed outfielder Carlos Gomez. New York has three days to come to terms with the two-time Cy Young Award winner, who has a no-trade clause and can veto the transaction if his new team is unable to sign him.

2010 - Avoiding an arbitration hearing scheduled for next month, Joe Saunders and the Angels come to terms on a $3.7 million, one-year deal. The 28-year-old southpaw posted a 16-7 record last year and is 33-14 for Los Angeles during the last two seasons.

On January 30 in Baseball History...

1919 - During World War I, unable to get in touch with their manager Christy Mathewson, who is in France serving in the army, the Reds hire Pat Moran. The former Phillies skipper will lead Cincinnati to a World Championship.

2006 - The Cubs and Jerry Hairston Jr. (.261, 4, 30) avoid salary arbitration when the second baseman/outfielder agrees to a one-year, $2.3 million deal. The 29-year old Illinois native was acquired from the Orioles last February for slugger Sammy Sosa.

2009 - The Mets avoid salary arbitration with John Maine (10-8, 4.18) when both sides agree to a $2.6 million, one-year deal. The 25-year old right-handed starter, who missed the last five weeks of the season due to an injury to his pitching shoulder, is expected to play a major role this year in the team's pitching rotation.

2009 - Locking up their most effective starter through his remaining eligible years, the Pirates avoid arbitration by signing Paul Maholm to a $14.5 million, three-year contract, which includes a team option for 2012. In his 31 starts for the Bucs last season, the 26-year old southpaw compiles a 9-9 record with a 3.71 ERA for a Pittsburgh team which finished 28 games under .500.

2009 - Jason Varitek reaches a preliminary agreement with the Red Sox for a reported guaranteed $5 million, one year contract which includes options for the 2010 season. The team's catcher and captain, a 12-year veteran, accepts much less than he would have made had he taken the team’s arbitration offer made in December.

2009 - Jon Garland agrees to a one-year deal with the Diamondbacks worth at least $7.25 million. The 29-year old right hander, who will fill Randy Johnson’s spot as a starter, joins a strong Arizona rotation which includes Brandon Webb, Dan Haren, Max Scherzer and Doug Davis.

2009 - Appearing on CNN’s “Larry King Live”, Joe Torre answers questions concerning the inflammatory excerpts of his book, The Yankee Years, which caused a firestorm of reaction from former players and fans after they were released last week. The Dodgers skipper, who managed the Bronx Bombers for a dozen seasons, tells the host he believes the controversy will die down and people will cool down after they get a chance to read the actual book.

2009 - The Colorado Rockies signed Josh Fogg as a free agent.

2012 - The Rangers sign Ron Washington to a two-year contract extension which will keep the 59-year-old skipper in the Texas dugout through the 2014 season. Washington piloted the team to consecutive appearances in the World Series, losing San Francisco and St. Louis in 2010 and 2011 respectively.

2015 - The Milwaukee Brewers signed Neal Cotts as a free agent.

2017 - As the result of ruling handed down by commissioner Rob Manfred, the Cardinals will relinquish their top two picks in this year’s amateur draft and pay the Astros $2 million as punishment for hacking into Houston's email system and scouting database. Chris Correa, the former Redbirds scouting director, who pled guilty in federal court to five counts of unauthorized access of a protected computer, is placed on baseball’s permanently ineligible list, after being sentenced to serve 46 months in prison.

2017 - The Toronto Blue Jays signed Lucas Harrell as a free agent.

2017 - The Tampa Bay Rays released Jason Coats.

2017 - The Tampa Bay Rays signed Colby Rasmus as a free agent.

2017 - The Chicago White Sox signed Peter Bourjos as a free agent.

2017 - The Atlanta Braves signed Kurt Suzuki as a free agent.

On January 31 in Baseball History...

1927 - N.L. President John Heydler rules that Rogers Hornsby cannot continue to both hold stock in the Cardinals and play for the Giants.

1952 - The Hall of Fame elects two new members: Harry Heilmann, with 203 votes, and Paul Waner with 195. Waner, a .333 career hitter, rapped out 3,152 hits and struck out just 376 times in 9,459 career at-bats. Heilmann was similarly skilled with the bat, winning four batting titles with the Tigers and finishing his career with a .342 average.

1953 - New York, Cleveland, and Boston retaliate at Bill Veeck, forcing the Browns to play afternoon games to avoid sharing TV revenues. Veeck takes his plan to the A.L. office to make them pay. The plan is rejected.

1959 -  Joe Cronin signs a seven-year deal to become the American League president. The former Red Sox infielder will remain in the post until 1973, when he will be succeeded by Lee MacPhail.

1961 - Houston voters approve financing for a domed stadium removing the last hurdle to gaining a major league franchise for the Texas city. The Astrodome, the eighth wonder of the world, will be the result of today's approval and will serve as the Astros home from 1965-1999.

1965 - Pud Galvin is chosen for Hall of Fame induction by the Special Veterans Committee. Galvin had 20 victories in ten out of 14 seasons and won 46 games in both 1883 and 1884 for Buffalo.

1971 - The Hall of Fame Special Veterans Committee selects seven men for enshrinement: former players Jake Beckley, Joe Kelley, Harry Hooper, Rube Marquard, Chick Hafey, and Dave Bancroft, as well as executive George Weiss.

1977 - One-time Indian infielder Joe Sewell, former Giants hurler Amos Rusie, and Al Lopez, as a manager of the White Sox, are elected to the Hall of Fame. Their selection to the Cooperstown shrine is made by the Veterans Committee.

1980 - The Astros sign free-agent second baseman Joe Morgan. Houston was the first major league team the two-time MVP played with before he was traded to the Reds and became a cog in the Big Red Machine.

1983 - Future Hall of Famer Tony Perez signs a one-year contract with the Phillies. The veteran first baseman will hit .241 appearing in 91 games in his only season with Philadelphia

2000 - Commissioner Bud Selig suspends John Rocker until May 1 due to the Braves closer's racial and ethnic insensitive remarks reported in Sports Illustrated. The 25-year old reliever is also fined and ordered to attend sensitivity training.

2001 - The Wall Street Journal quotes former players Monte Irvin, Sal Yvars and Al Gettel admitting the team stole catchers' signs during the 1951 pennant race when the Giants overcame the Dodgers' 13 1/2-game lead. According to the WSJ report, Bobby Thomson, whose three-run, ninth-inning walk-off homer in Game 3 of the National League playoffs won the pennant for New York, did not steal a sign before hitting his historic home run.

2003 - In an effort to secure funding for a major re-design of the 12-year old 'new' Comiskey Park, the White Sox announce the ballpark will now be known as U.S. Cellular Field. The 23-year deal with the wireless service provider, which will pay the White Sox $68 million, changes the name of the home used by the Southsiders since 1910.

2007 - At New York’s Gracey Mansion, Major League Baseball announces the 2008 All Star Game will be played at Yankee Stadium for the fourth time (1939, 1960, 1977) in the ballpark’s history. The annual Midsummer Classic will showcase the historic ‘House that Ruth Built’ in its final season as the home of the Bronx Bombers.

2008 - Pedro Feliz (.253, 20, 72) and the Phillies come to terms on an $8.5 million, two-year contract which could be worth up to $15 million over three years with an option and various performance bonuses. The versatile free-agent third baseman helps the club to shore up its weakness at the hot corner.

2008 - Brad Wilkerson (.234, 20, 62) signs a one-year, $3 million contract to roam the outfield for the Mariners. The acquisition of the free-agent flycatcher may be an indication that the much anticipated trade with the Orioles for southpaw Erik Bedard is close, as Seattle includes outfielder Adam Jones to Baltimore as part of the deal.

2011 - Rafael Betancourt becomes the fifth non-free agent to sign a multiyear deal with the Rockies when he agrees to a new contract that calls for $4 million in 2012 and includes a $4.25 million mutual option for the following season. The 35-year old right-handed reliever joins shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, and hurlers Matt Lindstrom and Jason Hammel to be offered an extended deal from Colorado this offseason.

2013 - Martin Prado, acquired by the Diamondbacks in the Justin Upton trade with Atlanta, agrees to a $40 million, four-year contract with his new team. The 29-year-old All-Star, who plays both in the outfield and the infield, is slated to play third base to help fill the void created by the departure of Chris Johnson, who was also sent to the Braves in the deal.

2017 - The Washington Nationals signed Matt Albers as a free agent.

On February 1 in Baseball History...

1913 - Jim Thorpe signs with the New York baseball Giants. The olympic hero will compile a life-time .252 batting average during his six seasons in the major leagues, which includes stints with the Reds and Braves.

1914 - In the very first game ever to take place in the Egyptian desert, the White Sox and Giants play to a 3-3 tie. The contest was part of a 56-game world tour promoting baseball.

1919 - The Dodgers trade first baseman Jake Daubert to the Reds for outfielder Tommy Griffith. Daubert, a former M.V.P. with Brooklyn, is shipped out shortly after receiving an out-of-court settlement from the Dodgers for the balance of his salary ($2,150) because the 1918 season ended a month early.

1954 - In a six-player trade, the Braves deal a pair of southpaws, Johnny Antonelli and Don Liddle, catcher Ebba St. Claire as well as shortstop Billy Klaus to the Giants in exchange for play-off hero Bobby Thomson and backstop Sammy Calderone. Thomson will break his ankle in an exhibition game and will miss most of the season for Milwaukee while Johnny Antonelli posts a 21-7 record for his new team in New York.

1954 - The Braves trade southpaws Johnny Antonelli and Don Liddle along with backstop Ebba St. Claire and infielder Billy Klaus to the Giants in exchange for outfielder Bobby Thomson and catcher Sammy Calderone. Thomson, who hit the historic walk-off home run in the 1951 National League playoffs, will break his ankle during spring training and will replaced by a promising prospect named Hank Aaron

1959 - Zack Wheat, a Brooklyn favorite of the teens and twenties, is unanimously elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee. Wheat, a .317 hitter over his 19-year career, batted .300 or better 14 times.

    1962 - The N.L. releases its first 162-game schedule.

1965 - The National League adopts a disaster plan in the event a team's plane crashes.

1970 - The Veterans Committee selects former commissioner Ford Frick and former players Earle Combs and Jesse Haines to the Hall of Fame. Haines won 210 games for the Cardinals and pitched in four World Series. Although he played 100 games in a season just nine times, Combs accumulated 1,866 hits and batted .325. Ford Frick was commissioner from 1951 to 1965, but he is best remembered for suggesting that an asterisk be placed next to the name of anyone who broke Babe Ruth's home run record during the eight additional games on the schedule in 1961.

1973 -  Commissioner Bowie Kuhn announces the selection of Monte Irvin for the Hall of Fame by the Special Committee on the Negro Leagues. Irvin spent a decade with the Newark Eagles of the Negro Leagues before he joined the New York Giants in 1949. He led the N.L. with 121 RBI in 1951, and he batted .293 in 764 major league games.

1976 - East Lansing police arrest Dodgers reliever Mike Marshall for disobeying the orders set by the Michigan State University police prohibiting him from taking batting practice. MSU feared he would hit balls too far and injure students on an adjacent tennis court. Marshall protests that it is against his rights as an MSU instructor and files a lawsuit against the school.

1985 - The Giants trade Jack Clark to the Cardinals for David Green, Jose Uribe, Dave LaPoint and Gary Rajsich. The slugging first baseman will play a pivotal role in the Redbirds winning the National League pennant this season.

1999 - The Yankees trade highly touted third base prospect Mike Lowell to the Marlins for minor league pitchers Eddie Yarnall, Todd Noel and Mark Johnson. Scott Brosius' outstanding 1998 performance made the former minor league player-of-the-year expendable.

2001 - Postseason hero Jim Leyritz signs a $500,000, one-year minor league contract with the Mets. The former Yankee has hit one home run per every 7.6 postseason at-bats making it the third best performance for players with five or more postseason round trippers.

2002 - Six-time All-Star Kenny Lofton (.261, 14, 66) agrees to a $1.25 million, one-year contract with the White Sox. The 34-year center fielder, who has played with the Indians, Braves and Astros during his 11-year major league career has a .302 life-time batting average.

2003 - Red Sox president Larry Lucchino announces four senators, Edward M. Kennedy D-MA, John F. Kerry D-MA, John McCain, R-AZ, and Tom Daschle, D-SD, will file legislation nominating Jackie Robinson for the Congressional Gold Medal. Other recipients of the medal have included statesman George Washington, boxer Joe Louis, and poet Robert Frost.

2005 - A web site claims Yogi Berra has filed a $10 million lawsuit against Turner Broadcaster System due to a ‘Sex and the City' ad which used the Hall of Famer’s name as an possible answer concerning the definition of yogasm. The choices included (a) a type of yo-yo trick, (b) sex with Yogi Berra and (c) what Samantha has with a guy from yoga class.

2006 - At a luncheon at Safeco Field, Astros second baseman Craig Biggio becomes the 41st recipient of the Hutch Award. The prestigious award, named in honor of Seattle's Fred Hutchinson, a major league pitcher and manager who died of cancer in 1964, is given annually to a Major League Baseball player who best exemplifies Hutch's fighting spirit and competitive desire.

2008 - In the richest contract ever given to a pitcher, southpaw Johan Santana agrees to a $137.5 million, six-year deal completing the blockbuster trade between the Twins and the Mets. In exchange for the two-time Cy Young award winner, who would be lost to free agency after the season, Minnesota gets four of New York's highly touted minor leaguers including three top pitching prospects, Philip Humber, Kevin Mulvey and Deolis Guerra as well as fleet-footed outfielder Carlos Gomez.

2008 - Avoiding arbitration, the Indians sign Casey Blake (.270, 18, 78) to a $6.1 million, one-year deal. The 34-year old third baseman moved to Cleveland's hot corner replacing Andy Marte, who was injured and then sent back to the minors last season.

2010 - The Hall of Fame announces Jon Miller is the recipient of this year's Ford C. Frick Award, which is an honor given for excellence in baseball broadcasting. The 58-year old veteran broadcaster, who started his career with the A's 1974 and has called games for the Rangers, Red Sox and Orioles, is the current play-by-play voice of the Giants and ESPN's Sunday Baseball telecast.

2010 - The Reds trade center fielder Willy Taveras and infielder Adam Rosales to the A's in exchange for infielder Aaron Miles and a player to be named. Cincinnati, using the money they saved in the deal, agrees to a $3.02 million, one-year contract with Orlando Cabrera to become the team's starting shortstop

2011 - Manny Ramirez and Johnny Damon sign one-year deals with the Rays. The free-agent outfielders, former Red Sox teammates who won two world championships during their tenure in Boston, will help Tampa Bay fill the void created by the departure of Gold Glover Carl Crawford to their old team.

2011 - Wandy Rodriguez and the Astros avoid arbitration by coming to terms on a $34 million, three-year deal. The 32-year old southpaw, who has compiled a 62-64 record in his six years in the majors, all with Houston, won eight of his last 10 decisions posting a 2.03 ERA over his final 18 starts last season.

2013 - The Chicago White Sox claimed Lars Anderson from the Arizona Diamondbacks on waivers.

2014 - The Tampa Bay Rays signed Wilson Betemit as a free agent.

2016 - The Minnesota Twins signed Carlos Quentin as a free agent.

On February 2 in Baseball History...

1876 - The National League is officially formed with teams located in Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Hartford, Louisville, New York, Philadelphia and St. Louis.

1925 - The N.L. inaugurates its Golden Jubilee Year by holding its spring meeting in the same room of New York's Broadway Central Hotel where the league was founded on February 2, 1876.

1936 - Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Walter Johnson, and Christy Mathewson are the first five men elected into baseball's new Hall Fame, which is scheduled to be open in 1939 as part of the game's celebration of its centennial. A claim made by former the 1905 Mills Commission, that proves to be erroneous, suggests that the national pastime was invented by Civil War hero Abner Doubleday in Cooperstown, making the small village in upstate New York the perfect place for the induction of the legendary ballplayers.

1943 - After experimenting with a vest worn over knit jerseys, the Cubs return to conventional baggy flannels for 1943. The outfitting change saves the organization $2,000 on the cost of uniforms.

1944 - The leagues meet in New York to discuss postwar action. They decide that players with war service will be guaranteed a 30-day trial with pay as well as restrictions on their release or assignment. Military service will count as playing time.

1950 - At a Boston sports writers dinner, infielder Bobby Doerr receives the Fred Hoey Award, given by the scribes in memory of the first full-time broadcaster for both the Red Sox and the Braves. The scrappy second baseman's friend and BoSox teammate, Ted Williams, surprises the gathering by attending the event wearing a tie.

1964 - The Hall of Fame Special Veterans Committee tabs Red Faber, Burleigh Grimes, Tim Keefe, Heinie Manush, John Montgomery Ward, and Miller Huggins for induction in the biggest veterans class ever. Keefe (a pitcher) and Ward (a pitcher and shortstop) were 19th century greats, Faber and Grimes were standout hurlers of the early 20th century, Manush batted .330 over 17 seasons, and Huggins had a .645 career winning percentage and won six pennants as manager of the Yankees.

1969 - Pitchers Stan Coveleski and Waite Hoyt are voted into the Hall of Fame by the Special Veterans Committee. Coveleski won 20 games for four straight years with the Indians and finished his career with 215 victories and a .602 winning percentage. Hoyt won 237 games and pitched for seven pennant winners.

1972 - The Hall of Fame Special Veterans Committee selects former players Lefty Gomez and Ross Youngs as well as former A.L. president Will Harridge. Gomez won 189 with a .649 career winning percentage and pitched for five World Champion Yankees clubs. Youngs was a .322 career hitter who played for four straight pennant winners with John McGraw's Giants. Harridge was A.L. president for 28 years, a longer term than even the one served by the league's founder, Ban Johnson.

1976 - The Special Veterans Committee selects players Roger Connor and Freddie Lindstrom and umpire Cal Hubbard for Cooperstown. Hubbard becomes the first man elected to both the Football and Baseball Hall of Fame. Lindstrom was a .311 career hitter who batted .358 in 1928 and .379 in 1930 and had 231 hits in both those seasons for the Giants. Connor, an power-hitting threat, batted .317 in 1,997 major-league games from 1880 to 1897.

1987 - Three-time 20-game winner Dennis Leonard, who returned to the majors in 1986 after a three-year absence due to a knee injury, announces his retirement. Leonard was 8-13 with a 4.44 ERA for the Royals in his final season.

1987 - The Braves trade Craig McMurty to the Blue Jays for second baseman Damaso Garcia and pitcher Luis Leal. The right-handers will never pitch for the team to which they are dealt, and Garcia will hit .117 in 21 games before being released by Atlanta.

1989 - Bill White, a six-time All-Star and longtime Yankees broadcaster, is elected president of the National League. He becomes the highest-ranking black official in American professional sports.

1993 - Marge Schott is suspended for one year by major league baseball for bringing "disrepute and embarrassment" to the national pastime. The Cincinnati Reds owner has repeatedly caused an uproar with her racial and ethnic remarks.

1999 - Padres' outfielder Greg Vaughn becomes the first player in major league history to hit 50 home runs in a season and then be traded. The slugger is dealt to the Reds along with Mark Sweeney for Reggie Sanders, Damian Jackson and Josh Harris.

2001 - It will take approximately seven more feet to hit a home run at Camden Yards this season as a result of the Orioles moving home plate. The new alignment of the field will also cut down the amount of foul territory available with the foul poles being almost flush against the left- and right-field corners.

2003 - Red Sox Manager Grady Little, knuckleballer Tim Wakefield and first-base coach Dallas Williams appear at the Atrium Mall in Newton modeling the team's new look, including solid red socks. The Red Sox socks have had very little red in recent years and haven't been totally red for over fifty years.

2005 - The much heralded Sammy Sosa trade to the Orioles is finalized as commissioner Bud Selig approves the deal and the 36-year old slugger passes a physical. The Cubs exchange ‘Slammin’ Sammy’ for second baseman Jerry Hairston Jr. and two minor-leaguers and agree to pay Baltimore $16.15 million of the remaining $25 million left on a $72 million, four-year contract signed in 2003.

2008 - Filling a tall order, the Nationals avoid arbitration with Jon Rauch signing the 6' 11" pitcher to a $3.2 million, two-year deal. The right-handed reliever, who led the big leagues with 88 appearances, compiled an 8-4 record with four saves while posting a 3.61 ERA in 87 1-3 innings of work.

2009 - According to a report in The Sports Business Journal, MLB tax documents for the fiscal year ending October 31, 2007 show Bud Selig receiving a salary of $18.35 million. The compensation package, if correctly stated, would make the commissioner better paid than most of the superstars in the game at the time, with exception of Jason Giambi, Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter and Roger Clemens, all of whom were on the Yankees' payroll.

2011 - Alexei Ramirez and the White Sox agree to a four-year, $32.5 million contract extension and a $10 million team option for an additional year. Earlier in the off-season, the Pale Hose picked up his option for 2011, coming to terms with the 29-year old good-hitting shortstop with a base salary of $2.75 million.

2012 - The Washington Nationals signed Edwin Jackson as a free agent.

2015 - The Tampa Bay Rays signed Ronald Belisario as a free agent.

2017 - Roy Halladay, who posted a 148-76 (.661) record during his dozen seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, and Vladimir Guerrero, a four-time all-star while playing for the Montreal Expos during the first eight years of his career, have been elected to the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. Other inductees for the June 24th ceremony include past Baseball Canada president Ray Carter, the 2015 Canadian men’s team that won gold at the Pan-Am Games, and Little League umpire Doug Hudlin, a Victoria, British Columbia native who will be inducted posthumously.

On February 3 in Baseball History...

1886 - Former professional baseball player Albert Spalding begins a sporting goods company with $800. The future Hall-of-Famer will become the manufacturer of the first official baseball as well as the tennis ball, basketball, golf ball, and football.

1900 - Rival forces fight for control of the Union Park Ball Grounds in Baltimore. John McGraw's men camp around a fire at third base. Ned Hanlon, his former manager in Baltimore in the 1890s, now manager of Brooklyn and still president of the Baltimore club in the N.L., has forces camped around first base.

1938 - College basketball player Lou Boudreau is suspended by the University of Illinois for taking illegal payments from the Indians, but the 19-year old hoopster will go on to have a 15-year Hall of Fame career in the big leagues as a player-manager for Cleveland and the Red Sox. In addition, as a broadcaster, he will be traded to the Cubs by radio station WGN to become the team's skipper.

1942 - At a special meeting to discuss wartime regulations, MLB owners decide to allow 14 night games for each club, with Washington allowed 21. Two All-Star Games will be played, one with a military All-Star team. Curfews are set for night games with no inning to start after 12:50 A.M.

1965 - Braves officials propose a $500,000 payment to county officials if the club's lease to play in Milwaukee can be terminated a year early. The offer is refused.

1975 - The special Veterans Committee selects second baseman Billy Herman (Cubs, Dodgers, Braves and Pirates), skipper Bucky Harris (Senators, Tigers, Red Sox, Phillies and Yankees) and outfielder Earl Averill (Indians, Tigers, and Braves) to the Hall of Fame. An outspoken Averill had informed his family to decline the honor if he was ever to be inducted posthumously, fortunately he was enshrined in Cooperstown eight years before his passing.

1977 - The Hall of Fame's Special Committee on the Negro Leagues selects Martin Dihigo and John Lloyd. The committee is dissolved and its duties are turned over to the Veterans Committee.

1978 - Under the financial reorganization of the club, F.J. 'Steve' O'Neill, a lifelong resident of Cleveland, becomes the principal owner of the Indians. The trucking magnate was once a limited partner of the Tribe, but sold his Indians interest in the team in 1973 to become part of George Steinbrenner's syndicate that bought the Yankees.

1979 - The Twins trade perennial all-star and batting champ Rod Carew to the Angels for outfielders Ken Landreaux and Dave Engle and pitchers Paul Hartzell and Brad Havens. The future Hall of Famer will hit .314 during his seven seasons with the Halos.

1982 - For the second time, minor league catcher Angel Rodriguez is suspended from organized baseball for tipping off opposing Latin American batters of the upcoming pitch about to be thrown.

1987 - The Expos trade top reliever Jeff Reardon and catcher Tom Nieto to the Twins for pitcher Neal Heaton, catcher Jeff Reed and two minor leaguers.

1989 - Bill White is chosen to be the president of the National League, replacing Bart Giametti, who is leaving the post to become the commissioner of baseball. The appointment makes the former major league first baseman and Yankee broadcaster the highest ranking black executive in professional sports.

1998 - The Yankees replace recently resigned general manager Bob Watson with Brian Cashman. In 1996, during Watson's brief tenure, the Bronx Bombers win their first World Series since 1978.

1999 - After 16 years of doing local telecasts, the Mets do not ask Tim McCarver to return to the broadcast booth. Tom Seaver will replace the highly regarded broadcaster and will assume other duties within the organization.

2002 - Yankee catcher Jorge Posada (.277, 22, 95) signs a five-year contract with the club. Terms are not announced, but the Bronx Bomber backstop was asking for $7.75 million in arbitration which would make the 30-year-old the second best paid receiver in baseball history.

2008 - Eli Manning leads the Giants to an upset victory over the previously undefeated Patriots making it the second consecutive year a Manning has been the quarterback for the victorious NFL Super Bowl team. Eli and Peyton, who QBs for the Indianapolis Colts, join a select group brothers who have won world championship games in back-to-back years that include Liván (Marlins, 1997) and Orlando Hernández (1998, Yankees), Irish (Giants, 1922) and Bob Meusel (Yankees, 1923), and Bubba (Colts, 1970) and Tody Smith (Cowboys, 1971).

2009 - Oliver Perez agrees to a $36 million, three-year deal to stay with the Mets. The 29-year old inconsistent southpaw who has posted a 26-20 record with New York since being obtained from Pittsburgh during the 2006 season, will be part of the team's starting rotation.

2009 - Garrett Atkins (.286, 21, 99) avoids arbitration agreeing to a one-year deal with the Rockies. The 29-year old third baseman's $7.05 million contract makes him the second-highest paid player on the team, trailing only Todd Helton.

2009 - Justin Verlander (11-17, 4.84) agrees to a one-year contract worth $3,675,000 to stay with the Tigers, a dramatic increase from last season. The 2006 AL Rookie of the Year's original five-year contract, which slated the right-hander for a $600,000 salary in 2009, could be terminated if he had enough service time to become eligible for arbitration.

2009 - Rickie Weeks (.234, 14, 89) avoids arbitration with the Brewers agreeing to a $2.45 million, one-year deal. The 26-year-old second baseman, who has been injury prone over his first five seasons with the Brew Crew, can earn more with performance bonuses based on plate appearances.

2010 - Casey Kotchman and the Mariners, who recently acquired the first baseman in a trade with Boston for Bill Hall, come to terms on a one-year deal worth $3,517,500. The 26 year-old slick-fielding infielder has not made an error in his last 1,584 chances, covering a span of 185 games.

2011 - The New York Yankees signed Freddy Garcia as a free agent.

2011 - In a SRO news conference at Yankee Stadium, Andy Pettitte becomes the first 'Core of Four' teammate, a group which includes shortstop Derek Jeter, catcher Jorge Posada and closer Mariano Rivera, to announce his retirement. The 38-year old southpaw, who compiled a 240-138 record during his sixteen years in the major leagues, tells the reporters, "my body would get to where it needs to be, but my heart's not where it needs to be."

2011 - In a lawsuit unsealed at a Manhattan federal bankruptcy court, Mets' owners Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz are named in a complaint brought by the trustee for the victims of Bernie Madoff that contends they used the profits from investing in the multibillion-dollar Ponzi scheme to financially support their businesses, including their ownership of the major league club, in the face of repeated warnings that the investments might be fraudulent. The possible $1 billion settlement has created speculation in the sports and banking industries that the team will be sold to meet the financial obligation.

2012 - The Cubs and Matt Garza avoid arbitration when they agree to a one-year, $9.5 million deal. The 28 year-old right-hander posted a 10-10 record along with a 3.32 earned run average last year, his first season with the team.

2013 - In front of a home crowd of 87 fans, the California Institute of Technology baseball team snaps a 228-game losing streak, beating Pacifica in a non-conference game, 9-7. The Beavers, whose last victory occurred on Feb. 15, 2003, haven’t won a league game since 1988, a span of 463 contests.

2015 - The Atlanta Braves signed Eric Stults as a free agent.

2016 - The San Francisco Giants signed Conor Gillaspie as a free agent.

On February 4 in Baseball History...

1861 - Wearing ice skates, the champion Atlantics defeat the Charter Oak Club, 36-27 on a game played on frozen Litchfield Pond in South Brooklyn.

1893 - The first recorded version of the poem Casey at the Bat, which is vocalized by Russell Hunting, is released. The more well- known rendition of Earnest Thayer’s work, the one popularized by DeWolfe Hopper, will not be heard by the public until 1906.

1909 - Hall of Fame hurler John Clarkson, a 326-game winner, dies from pneumonia at the age of 47. The right-hander pitched for the Worcester Ruby Legs (1882), Chicago White Stockings (1884-1887), Boston Beaneaters (1888-1892), and Cleveland Spiders (1892-1894).

1956 - During spring training, the American League plans to test automatic intentional walks. The concept will not be used in the major leagues, but will be implemented over time for use in some youth leagues and scholastic teams.

1956 - In memory of the Hall of Fame hurler who died last year, the Cy Young Memorial Award is established to honor the outstanding major league pitcher of the year. The first recipient will be Don Newcombe who will post a 27-7 record along with an ERA of 3.06 for the Dodgers next season.

1958 - The Hall of Fame fails to enshrine any new members for the first time since 1950.

1960 - Although the top 13 vote-getters will eventually be inducted, the BBWAA doesn't elect a Hall of Fame candidate for the fifth time in 24 years. The fact no one receives the necessary 75 percent to be selected may be more of reflection of too many qualified candidates splintering the vote, rather than the lack of a player on the ballot deserving recognition.

1963 - Mayor Robert Wagner signs a bill that officially changes the name the of the stadium being constructed in Queens to William A. Shea Municipal Stadium, honoring the New York lawyer who was instrumental in obtaining a National League team for the Big Apple. The ballpark, formerly known as Flushing Meadows Stadium, will serve as the Mets home from 1964 to 2008.

1969 - Bowie Kuhn is selected by the major league owners to be baseball's fifth commissioner, a position he will hold until 1984. The former National League attorney, a future Hall of Famer for the role he will play during a turbulent time in the game, replaces William Eckert.

1971 - Commissioner Bowie Kuhn announces former Negro League players will have a separate wing in the Hall of Fame. Due to the controversy the announcement causes, it is decided inclusion in the regular Hall of Fame is more fitting and more of an honor for the former black players.

1976 - Federal judge John W. Oliver of the United States district court for Western Missouri upholds Peter Seitz's arbitration ruling which made Andy Messersmith and Dave McNally free agents. The Dodger and Expos pitchers challenged the reserve clause by playing, but not signing their contracts contending they were now free to sign with another team for next season, negating the owners' belief that the one-year contracts were perpetually renewed.

1984 - The Yankees obtain third baseman Toby Harrah and minor leaguer Rick Brown from the Indians for Dan Boitano, rookie outfielder Otis Nixon and minor leaguer Guy Elston. The team's new third baseman will hit just .217 in the one season he plays for the Bronx Bombers, but Nixon will go on to have a solid 17-year major league career leaving the game in 1999 with a lifetime batting average of .270.

1990 - The St. Petersburg Pelicans defeat the Palm Beach Tropics to win the first Senior Professional Baseball Association Championship, 12-4. Former major leaguers Steve Kemp and Lamar Johnson go deep for the newly crowned champs.

1991 - The Hall of Fame board of directors vote unanimously, 12-0, to accept the proposal presented last month by a special committee which excludes any player on the permanently ineligible list. The decision will ban Pete Rose's name from being placed on the HOF ballot.

2002 - The Minnesota Supreme Court refuses to consider an appeal of an injunction that forces the Twins to fulfill their Metrodome lease in 2002. The decision puts an end for this season any possibility of contraction in major league baseball.

2004 - Avoiding an arbitration hearing, the Cardinals and Albert Pujols (.359, 43, 124) agree to a $100 million, seven-year deal. The 24-year old slugging first baseman/outfielder was the runner-up to Barry Bonds of the Giants in the National League's MVP voting.

2005 - Needing to fill the void created by the departure of Sammy Sosa and Moises Alou, the Cubs avoid arbitration signing Aramis Ramirez (.318, 36, 103) to an $8.95 million, one-year contract. The 26-year old third baseman will be selected to the National League All-star team this season.

2005 - A dentist, who became partially blind after being struck attempting to catch a foul ball, is appealing his case in which he alleges the Phillies need to do more to protect fans. The case, dismissed by a Philadelphia Common Pleas judge citing that multiple warnings were made by the club, including public address announcements, text on the back of the ticket, and posted signs in the ballpark, will now be heard in the state’s Commonwealth Court.

2008 - Curtis Granderson (.302, 23, 74) and the Tigers come to terms on a five-year contract which includes a club option for 2013 worth $30.25 million. Joining Willie Mays and Frank Schulte, the 26 year-old outfielder last season became the third player in major league history to swipe 20 bases, and hit at least 20 homers, 20 triples and 20 doubles.

2009 - Brian Bannister and the Royals avoid salary arbitration agreeing to a one-year deal valued at $1,737,500. The right-hander, who was 9-16 with a 5.76 ERA in 32 starts for Kansas City in his sophomore season, placed third in the AL Rookie of the Year voting in 2007 after being obtained from the Mets.

2010 - Justin Verlander and the Tigers finalized an $80 million, five-year deal that keeps the talented hurler in the Motor City until 2014. The 26-year old right-hander has compiled a 65-43 record along with a 3.92 ERA during his first four years in the major leagues, all with Detroit.

2013 - The Houston Astros traded Jed Lowrie and Fernando Rodriguez to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for Chris Carter, Brad Peac0ck and Max Stassi.

2014 - The Diamondbacks announce the contracts of general manager Kevin Towers and skipper Kirk Gibson have been extended, but do not disclose the length and financial terms which were given. The extensions prevent the club’s brain trust from being lame ducks, with both men having just a year remaining on their current deal with Arizona, which they signed after the team’s 2011 National League West championship season.

2015 - The Anaheim Angels traded Yency Almonte to the Chicago White Sox completing trade in which the Chicago White Sox traded Gordon Beckham to the  Anaheim Angels in exchange for a player to be named later (August 21, 2014).

2015 - The Chicago White Sox released Dayán Viciedo.

2015 - Sarah Hudek, daughter of former major leaguer, All-Star right-hander John Hudek, announces she has signed a letter of intent to play baseball for Louisiana’s Bossier Parish Community College, making her one of the first females to ever compete at the collegiate level. The 5-foot-10, 150-pound teenage southpaw, whose fastball has been clocked at 82 mph, is as good as or even better than some of the males on the team, according to BPCC coach Aaron Vorachek.

2015 - Carlos Delgado, who enjoyed eight consecutive 30-homer seasons with the Blue Jays, while becoming the team's all-time leader in home runs (336), RBIs (1,058), and runs (889) will be inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in June. The Class of 2015 will also feature former Canadian players Corey Koskie and Matt Stairs, longtime Montreal Expos skipper Felipe Alou, along with Toronto Sun columnist Bob Elliott, recipient of the 2012 Spink Award given by the National Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

On February 5 in Baseball History...

1919 - N.L. president John Heydler dismisses charges brought in 1918 by Reds owner Garry Herrmann and manager Christy Mathewson against Hal Chase for betting against his team and throwing games in collusion with g@mblers. Two weeks later, Giants manager John McGraw trades first baseman Walter Holke and catcher Bill Rariden to the Reds for Chase.

1930 - Leo Durocher (.246, 0, 32) is selected off waivers by the Reds. The 24 -year old shortstop, an unpopular presence in the Yankees clubhouse, falls out of favor in New York after a salary dispute with Ed Barrow, the club's general manager.

1931 - Hack Wilson, who set National League marks for home runs and RBIs the previous season, signs for $35,000. The 31-year old Cub outfielder's RBI record is still standing today.

1934 - Future all-time home run leader Hammerin' Hank Aaron is born in Mobile, Alabama. The slugger will hit 755 home runs playing for the Braves and Brewers.

1942 - The Yankees trade Tommy Holmes to the Braves for Gene Moore and Buddy Hassett. Holmes will play ten seasons hitting over .300 for Boston and will establish the National League record consecutive game hitting streak with 37 for until it is broken by Pete Rose in 1978.

1951 - California governor Earl Warren denies the rumor that he is being considered to be baseball's next commissioner. The former vice-presidential candidate, who was on the Republican ticket with Thomas Dewey in the last election, will be confirmed as the 14th Chief Justice of the United States in 1954.

1956 - New York City Mayor Robert Wagner and Brooklyn Borough President Frank Cashmore sponsor a bill to create a Brooklyn Sports Center Authority, which will propose building a $30 million downtown sports center.

1977 - The Cubs deal southpaw Darold Knowles to the Rangers for a player to be named later and cash. The left-hander will post a 5-2 record for Texas, and outfielder Gene Clines, made part of the trade 10 days later, will help his new club batting a respectable .293 playing in 101 games for Chicago.

1983 - The Royals trade minor league prospect Cecil Fielder to the Blue Jays for outfielder Leon Roberts. The 32-year old flycatcher will have two mediocre seasons in Kansas City before retiring, with Fielder enjoying several MVP-caliber seasons during his 13-year tenure in the major leagues.

1999 - Major league baseball will honor each league's best hitter with an award named after Hank Aaron. The all-time home run king learns about the honor on his 65th birthday at an event which includes President Bill Clinton, Ernie Banks and Reggie Jackson.

2002 - The Boston Red Sox signed Jeff Abbott as a free agent.

2002 - Luis Arroyo is inducted into the Latin American Baseball Hall of Fame Museum. The Puerto Rican reliever, who made the National League All Star squad as a rookie with the Cardinals in 1955, had an eight-year career mark of 40-32 saving 36 games with a 3.93 ERA and is best remembered for his 1961 season with the Yankees (15-5, 29 saves).

2002 - Baseball announces the withdrawal of its plan for contraction this upcoming season, but the sport is still determined to eliminate two teams in 2003. Attempts to contract the Twins and Expos this season could not be accomplished due to a series of legal decisions and fierce opposition from the Players Association.

2002 - Troy Percival's seven-year tenure with Anaheim, which is the longest on the current roster, will increase as the All-Star reliever signs a two-year contract extension with the club. The 32-year-old right-hander, who is the Angels' all-time leader with 210 career saves, converted 39 of 42 save opportunities last season.

2002 - The Astros file a motion in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York asking the court to determine whether the 30-year naming agreement with Enron signed in 1999 should continue. The team does not want to call its stadium Enron Field any longer due to the financial burden placed on many Houston-area residents caused by the bankrupt energy company's business practices.

2007 - The Seattle Mariners signed Jim Parque as a free agent.

2007 - The San Diego Padres signed David Wells as a free agent.

2008 - Alex Rios (.297, 24, 85) and the Blue Jays agree on a $4,835,000, one-year deal which includes a $3.5 million signing bonus with a base salary of $1,335,000. The 26-year old All-star outfielder does not become eligible for free agency until the end of the 2010 season.

2008 - Freddie Sanchez signs an $11 million, two-year contract to continue to play second base for the Pirates. The 2006 National League batting champ could add another $8 million in 2010 if the Bucs exercise their option to retain his services.

2008 - Scott Podsednik (.243, 2, 11) agrees to a minor league contract with the Rockies. Best known for his role in the 2005 White Sox World Championship, the speedy 31-year old outfielder has been slowed by injuries the past two seasons.

2008 - Vying to stay in the starting rotation, Dave Bush (12-10, 5.12) signs a $2.55 million, one-year deal to pitch for the Brewers. The durable 28-year old right-hander, who made at least 31 starts each of the previous two seasons, can make an additional $50,000 as part of the arbitration agreement if he pitches 210 innings.

2009 - In an arrangement similar to last year, Odalis Perez and the Nationals agree to a non-guaranteed minor league deal which will reward the southpaw with an $850,000 major league contract if he makes the club this season during spring training. The left-hander made 30 starts for Washington a year ago posting a 7-12 record with a 4.34 ERA for the last-place team.

2009 - Joseph Reaves, Dodgers director of international relations, announces the May 16 regular-season game between the Mexico City Diablos Rojos and the Monterrey Sultanes will be played at Dodger Stadium. The contest between the two most storied franchises in Mexico marks the first time the league has played in the City of Angels.

2010 - The Twins and former L.A. infielder Orlando Hudson (.283, 9, 62) agree to a $5 million, one-year contract. The 32-year old free-agent second baseman, known as O-Dog, is expected to be the club's Number 2 hitter between leadoff man Denard Span and AL MVP Joe Mauer.

2010 - The ball thrown to Alex Rodriguez that he hit for his 500th home run is sold at an auction for $103,579 to an anonymous bidder. The historic horsehide, which cleared the fence at Yankee Stadium on August 4, 2007, was recovered in a scrum by a Rutgers University student.

2013 - The Miami Marlins signed Jon Rauch as a free agent.

2016 - The Toronto Blue Jays signed David Aardsma as a free agent.

On February 6 in Baseball History...

1921 - The New York American League franchise announces the purchase of a ten-acre plot of land for $675,000, from the estate of William Waldorf Astor, to be used as the future site of Yankee Stadium. The club's new ballpark, located on the west side of the Bronx, will sit directly across the Harlem River from the Polo Grounds, the team's current home for the past ten years as tenants to the Giants.

1926 - The St. Louis Browns acquire catcher Wally Schang from the Yankees for pitcher George Mogridge and cash. Although Schang is 37, he will hold the job as catcher for the Browns for four seasons.

1934 - The Reds purchase 43-year-old Dazzy Vance from the Cardinals for $7,500. The future Hall of Famer will pitch for two more years, although he will only make two starts for the Reds.

1934 - Ford Frick, a New York news reporter and broadcaster, is named the National League's public relations director.

1935 - Demanding a yearly salary of $25,000, future Hall of Famer (1953) Dizzy Dean becomes a holdout. The Cardinal right-handed ace will sign for $19,500 the following day.

1956 - Supporting the Wagner-Cashmore plan to build a $30-million downtown Brooklyn sports center, Walter O'Malley promises to buy four million dollars worth of bonds.

1958 - The Red Sox sign Ted Williams for $135,000 making him the highest paid player in major league history.

1962 - The Phillies announce the team will retire Robin Roberts' uniform number 36 when his new club, the Yankees, visits Clearwater to play Philadelphia in a March spring exhibition game. It will mark the first time that a uniform number has been retired in the 79-year history of the franchise.

1986 - The Yankees sign free-agent Al Holland. The well traveled reliever saved five games for three different teams last season.

2006 - Angels free-agent Bengie Molina (.295, 15, 69) and the Blue Jays come to terms on a $5 million, one-year deal with a $7.5 million mutual option for 2007 with a $500,000 buyout clause. Along with starter A.J. Burnett and closer B.J. Ryan, third baseman Troy Glaus and first baseman Lyle Overbay, the 31-year-old Gold Glove catcher becomes the latest blue chip to join Toronto during the off season.

2008 - The Rangers hire Nolan Ryan as team president during a pivotal point in club history, according to club president, Tom Hicks. The 61-year-old Hall of Fame hurler, who retired with the Rangers in 1993 after playing a record 27 seasons, is introduced at The Ballpark in Arlington with much fanfare including a video highlight package featuring many of the right-hander's milestones.

2010 - After Seattle declines to offer him salary arbitration, free-agent Erik Bedard agrees to stay a part of the Mariners' pitching rotation inking a one-year deal with a mutual option for 2011. The 30-year old oft-injured southpaw, who is rehabilitating after surgery on his pitching shoulder last August, will not have to continue in his disappointing role as the ace of the team with the off-season trade for Cliff Lee and the emergence of Félix Hernández.

2012 - The Washington Nationals signed Mark Teahen as a free agent.

2012 - An arbitration panel rules in his favor of 27-year old Anibal Sanchez (8-9, 3.67) awarding the Marlin right-hander with a record-breaking $8 million salary for this season. The decision, which puts aside the team's counter offer of $6.9 million, represents the largest amount ever given to a starting pitcher who went to arbitration.

2016 - The Toronto Blue Jays signed Gavin Floyd as a free agent.

On February 7 in Baseball History...

1908 - Exasperated Connie Mack sells his talented but eccentric and unreliable hurler, Rube Waddell, to the St. Louis Browns for $5,000.

1942 - The Reds trade catcher Ernie Lombardi to the Braves for cash. The future Hall of Fame backstop, who will hit .330 for his new team, will spend only one season in Boston before being dealt to the Giants for Hugh Poland and Connie Ryan.

1949 - Yankee outfielder Joe DiMaggio becomes the first American Leaguer to make $100,000 in one season. Hank Greenberg was the first player to make six figures when he accepted the Pirates offer in 1947 after being waived by the Tigers

1958 - The Dodgers officially become the Los Angeles Dodgers, Inc.

1959 - White Sox president Mrs. Dorothy Rigney agrees to sell the team to Bill Veeck for a reported $2.7 million. Chicago insurance broker Charles O. Finley allows that he can match the price. Charles Comiskey will try to stop Veeck from buying the Sox, but will be unsuccessful.

1979 - Jesse Orosco becomes 'the player to be named later' in the Mets trade of Jerry Koosman to the Twins. The left-handed reliever will spend 24 seasons in the major leagues setting the all-time record for appearances with 1,252.

1983 - The Mariners select Reds minor leaguer Danny Tartabull as compensation for the loss of Floyd Bannister to the White Sox. The outfielder will hit .270 and receive consideration for the the Rookie of the Year Award in 1986, but will be traded away in the off season along with Rick Luecken to the Royals for Scott Bankhead, Mike Kingery and Steve Shields.

1987 - For only the second time, a player is forced to take a pay cut due to salary arbitration. Dodger pitcher Orel Hershiser signs for $800,000 which is a twenty percent reduction.

2005 - The Tigers sign 31-year-old right fielder Magglio Ordonez (.292, 9.37) for five-years for a reported $75 million. The contract for the free agent slugger, recovering from knee surgery, includes options which could extend the All-Star’s stay in Detroit for an additional two years making the deal nearly $100 million.

2006 - Alex Gonzalez, who signed with the Red Sox as a free agent yesterday, singles in the tying run and then scores the winning run as Henry Blanco's pop fly bounces off the head off Erick Aybar giving Venezuela its first Caribbean Series championship since 1989. The ball, which the Dominican Republic Licey's Tigers’ shortstop lost in the lights, is ruled a double and caps a two-run bottom of the ninth rally resulting in 5-4 comeback victory for the Caracas Lions.

2009 - The Sports Illustrated Web site reports Alex Rodriguez is one of the 104 players who tested positive for steroids in 2003. The testing, which was intended only to determine the extent of steroid use by players at the time, revealed the Ranger shortstop was using Primobolan, an anabolic substance.

2012 - The Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame announces Rusty Staub will be one of the inductees at its June 23 ceremony in St. Marys, Ontario, along with former big-league pitcher Rheal Cormier, Brewers general manager Doug Melvin, and the 2011 Pan Am Games gold-medal winning Team Canada senior squad. The former Expos outfielder, referred to as the Le Grand Orange by the Montreal fans because of his red hair, was a fan favorite in the early days of the franchise due to his work ethic and for his active role in promoting the game north of the border.

2012 - Avoiding arbitration, Elvis Andrus and the Rangers come to terms on a three-year, $14.6 million contract. The agreement gives the 23 year-old infielder an early opportunity to sign a huge deal when he reaches free agency, which works with Texas' plans to make Jurickson Profar, currently playing A ball, their starting shortstop in a couple of years.

2014 - The Chicago White Sox signed Mitchell Boggs as a free agent.

2014 - Alex Rodriguez, who has consistently denied the use of banned substances while wearing Yankee pinstripes, drops his two lawsuits against MLB, ending the likelihood of a long drawn-out legal battle over his season-long suspension handed down for the alleged use of performance-enhancing substances. The Bronx Bomber third baseman was one of 14 individuals suspended due to baseball’s investigation of a Florida anti-aging clinic, but was the only player to contest his penalty, which was the longest ever given for using PEDs.

1901 - It is rumored the National League's leading hitter and the Phillies' top player, Napoleon Lajoie, has jumped to the new American League's Philadelphia franchise.

1916 - The N.L. votes down a proposal by Charlie Ebbets of Brooklyn to impose a limit of 2,000 seats that clubs can sell for 25 cents. Boston has 10,000 such seats, St. Louis 9,000, Philadelphia 6,500 and Cincinnati 4,000.

1942 - At the Folsom Correctional facility in California, the annual game between big leaguers and the prison inmates is halted as the guards search for two convicts who have tried to escaped. The escapees are caught, but the game does not resume with the visiting team ahead 24-5 at the end of seven innings.

1956 - The legendary Connie Mack dies at age 93. After managing Pittsburgh's N.L. club from 1894 to 1896, the former catcher became a prominent figure in Ban Johnson's Western League. Mack was a founder of the American League and its Philadelphia franchise in l901. In 50 years with the Athletics, he won nine pennants and five World Championships - but also finished last 17 times.

1972 - Commissioner Bowie Kuhn announces the Hall of Fame selection of legendary sluggers Josh Gibson and Buck Leonard by the Special Committee on the Negro Leagues. The duo led the Homestead Grays to nine straight league championships from 1937 to 1945.

1973 - The owners announce 'Early Bird' spring training, which is scheduled to begin next week will be canceled until negotiations with the Players' Association are completed. The lockout will last until the end of the month.

1982 - The longest-playing infield foursome is broken up as the Dodgers trade Davey Lopes to the A's for minor leaguer Lance Hudson. The second baseman had played with Steve Garvey, Ron Cey and Bill Russell since 1974.

1983 - One day after taking a job as director of sports promotions for the Claridge Hotel and C@sino in Atlantic City, Mickey Mantle is ordered to sever his ties with Major League Baseball by Commissioner Bowie Kuhn. Mantle joins fellow Hall of Famer Willie Mays as players banned from baseball by Kuhn for involvement with legalized gambling.

1984 - One day after losing Type A free agent Tom Underwood to the Orioles, the A's grab pitcher Tim Belcher from the Yankees as compensation. The number-one selection in the June 1983 draft, Belcher did not sign with the Twins and was available in the January draft. The Yankees signed him on February 2, only to lose him because they had already submitted their list of 26 protected players.

2006 - After rejecting an earlier proposal by an 8-5 margin just a few hours ago, the District of Columbia Council reverses itself and approves a revised lease for new Washington D.C. ballpark. At the urging of Mayor Anthony A. Williams the council reconvenes and votes 9-4 to approve the deal after attaching legislation capping the district's total cost at a bit less than $611 million.

2006 - Wayne Krivsky, a leading candidate for the job in 2004, is finally selected as the Reds general manager. The 51-year old former Twins executive replaces Dan O’Brien, who was fired by new owner Bob Castellini in an effort to select his own baseball people.

2006 - Johnny Damon, the former beloved Red Sox outfielder who signed as a free agent with the hated Yankees, takes out a full page ad in the Boston Globe thanking fans for their loyalty and support. As one of the most popular players in franchise history, the long-hair self proclaimed ‘idiot’ incurred the wrath of Beantown when he left town for a $52 million, four-year contract to play in the Bronx.

2008 - In a long and drawn-out 5-for-1 deal, the Mariners finally land Erik Bedard (13-5, 3.16) from the Orioles. In exchange for their Opening Day pitcher last season, Baltimore receives center fielder Adam Jones, veteran southpaw reliever George Sherrill, and pitching prospects Chris Tillman, Tony Butler and Kam Mickolio from the Emerald City.

2008 - The Brewers exercise manager Ned Yost's 2009 option. The 53-year-old skipper led Milwaukee to its first winning season since 1992, finishing second in the NL Central with an 83-79 won-loss record.

2009 - In the softball championship game of the Leadoff Classic, Kylie Reynolds of Kent State strikes out 18 Stetson batters en route to throwing a nine-inning no-hitter. The Golden Flashes' junior sets a new school record for strikeouts in her 1-0 masterpiece at Patricia Wilson Field.

2010 - As a tribute to his fellow countryman, Omar Vizquel will wear the number 11 this season to honor Luis Aparicio. The White Sox will temporarily "unretire" the Hall of Famer's number for the Venezuelan shortstop, who was recently acquired by Chicago as a free agent.

2010 - The Brewers announce the club plans to erect a seven-foot statue of former owner Bud Selig that will be unveiled during a pre-game ceremony at Miller Park in August. Selig, the current baseball commissioner, led a group of investors that bought the Seattle Pilots in 1970 and moved the bankrupt franchise to Milwaukee.

2011 - Tony Malinosky, the oldest living major leaguer, dies at the age of 101 in Oxnard, California. The World War veteran and survivor of the Battle of the Bulge, an infielder with the 1937 Brooklyn Dodgers, was honored by the team on his 100th birthday.

2013 - The Pittsburgh Pirates signed Francisco Liriano as a free agent.

2017 - The Boston Red Sox signed Carlos Quentin as a free agent.

On February 9 in Baseball History...

1916 - The N.L. votes down a proposal by the Giants, Braves, and Cubs to increase the club player limit from 21 to 22. (The Reds want to decrease it to 20.)

1920 - The Joint Rules Committee bans all foreign substances or other alterations to the ball by pitchers, including saliva, resin, talcum powder, paraffin, and the shine and emery balls. A pitcher caught cheating will be suspended for ten days. The A.L. allows each club to name just two pitchers who will be allowed to use the pitch for one more season. The N.L. allows each club to name all its spitball pitchers. No pitchers other than those designated will be permitted to use it in 1920, and none at all after 1920.

1943 - The N.L. is looking for a buyer for the Phillies, whose owner, Gerry Nugent, has fallen in arrears on rent and bank loans. The league pays $10 a share for 4,685 out of 5,000 outstanding shares in club.

1951 - The St. Louis Browns sign Satchel Paige. The 45-year-old pitcher had been out of the major leagues since last pitching for the Indians in l949.

1971 - Satchel Paige is nominated for the Hall of Fame. On June 10 the Hall's new Special Committee on the Negro Leagues will formally select the flamboyant fireballer for induction.

1976 - Oscar Charleston is selected for the Hall of Fame by the Special Committee on the Negro Leagues. Charleston, a quick and powerful player as well as a skillful manager, played in five different decades.

1980 - The late Yankee catcher Thurman Munson is inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame of Kent State University. The young college outfielder was taught to play backstop by Hal Schoonover, a coach and benefactor of the Golden Flashes baseball program.

1981 - At the age of thirty-seven, Joe Morgan inks a one-year deal with the Giants. The future Hall of Famer will play an additional season in San Francisco, winning the Silver Slugger award for being the best offensive second baseman in the National League.

1984 - After vetoing a trade to Oakland, two-time all-star Dusty Baker is waived by the Dodgers. The 35-year old outfielder will sign as a free agent, hitting .294 in 100 games, with the Giants, before ending his career with the A's, the team he had refused to play for when dealt last season.

1988 - The A's sign a one-year deal with free agent Don Baylor. The 39-year old designated hitter will appear in 92 games, hitting .220 for the American League champs before retiring at the end of the season.

2001 - After 13 months of negotiations, Derek Jeter and the Yankees finalize a $189 million, 10-year contract. The deal makes the all-star shortstop second only to Alex Rodriquez ($252 million/10 years) as the highest paid player in the history of the sport.

2005 - The Cubs trade reliever Kyle Farnsworth (4-5, 4.73) and a player to be named to the Tigers in exchange for pitcher Roberto Novoa (1-1, 5.09) and minor leaguers, Scott Moore and Bo Flowers. Farnsworth’s inconsistency out of the bullpen last season made him very unpopular with the Wrigley Field fans.

2006 - Deliberating for a little more than four hours, a jury rules the Angels did not breach a contract with the city of Anaheim when the ball club changed its name. Thirteen months ago the team known as the Anaheim Angels became the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim prompting the city where it plays to file a lawsuit, claiming the change in name amounted to at least $100 million in lost revenue.

2007 - Prior to performing in a benefit concert in Connecticut, Bernie Williams shares with reporters that he plans to decline the Yankees’ invitation to attend spring training on a minor league contract. The guitar-playing outfielder added he has been working out, but is doubtful about playing for the Bronx Bombers this season.

2008 - After auditioning for about two-thirds of the teams in the major leagues last month and considering offers from four clubs, Keith Foulke comes out of retirement signing a $700,000, one-year contract with the A's. The 35-year-old reliever, best known for throwing the last pitch in the 2004 World Championship for the victorious Red Sox, retired prior to the 2007 season after signing a deal with the indians.

2009 - Two days after the story breaks on SI.com, Alex Rodriguez admits to and then apologizes for his use of performance-enhancing drugs when he played shortstop for the Rangers from 2001 to 2003. In an exclusive interview conducted on ESPN, the Yankees superstar acknowledges using performance-enhancing drugs hoping to fulfill the expectations after signing a record 10-year, $252 million contract with Texas.

2010 - Greg Gagne is selected to be the twenty-second member of the Twins Hall of Fame. During his ten-year tenure with the team, which included the World Championship seasons of 1987 and 1991, the light-hitting shortstop was best known for his defensive prowess, but he will also be remembered for hitting two inside-the-park home runs in the same game in 1986.

2012 - Nelson Cruz and the AL champion Rangers come to terms on a $16 million, two-year deal to keep ALCS MVP in Texas. The agreement avoids an arbitration hearing that had been scheduled to take place next week.

2013 - The Cleveland Indians signed Jason Giambi as a free agent.

2016 - The Chicago White Sox signed Mat Latos as a free agent.

2016 - The Chicago White Sox signed Travis Ishikawa as a free agent.

On February 10 in Baseball History...

1910 - Ground is broken in Chicago for a modern concrete-and-steel stadium to replace the obsolete South Side Park. The Pale Hose will played their first game in their new home, originally known White Sox Park, on July 1, losing to the Browns, 2-0.

1916 - After Chief Meyers is waived by the Giants to the Robins, Brooklyn owners Ebbets and Haughton disagree on his status. A coin toss, won by Ebbets, decides the catcher will remain with the team.

1920 - The spitball, shineball, and emeryball are outlawed by the American and National League Joint Rules Committee. Seventeen pitchers, including Burleigh Grimes, who will be the last player to legally throw a doctored pitch, are allowed to keep throwing the banned pitches until they retired.

1971 - The Yankees announced Bill White will join Phil Rizzuto and Frank Messer on the WPIX broadcast team becoming the first black to do play-by-play regularly for a major-league baseball team. The former All-Star first baseman will stay in the booth for 18 seasons, leaving in 1989 to served as president of the National League.

1982 - The Mets agree to a $10 million, five-year deal with George Foster completing the trade with the Reds which sent Jim Kern, Greg Harris and Alex Trevino to Cincinnati. During his four-and-half year tenure with team, the perennial all-star outfielder proves to be a major offensive disappointment, and will be released outright during the 1986 season after he accuses the club of racism for benching him in favor of Kevin Mitchell, a fellow African-American.

1984 - After five months of discussion, the Mets and Keith Hernandez, who was eligible for free-agency at the end of the season, come to terms on an $8 million, five-year contract. The deal makes the first baseman the second-highest-paid player in franchise history, earning slightly less than George Foster's $10 million, five-year pact signed exactly two years ago.

2000 - After receiving a ‘hometown’ discount, the Reds trade pitchers Brett Tomko and Jake Meyer, center fielder Mike Cameron, and infielder Antonio Perez to the Mariners in exchange for the services of Ken Griffey, Jr. Cincinnati signs the 30-year old superstar outfielder to the richest package in baseball history, but the nine-year deal worth $116.5 million is considered quite a bargain in the current market.

2005 - Curt Schilling donates the blood-stained sock he wore in Game 2 of the World Series to the Hall of Fame. The sock presently is part of a Red Sox memorabilia tour which also includes Derek Lowe's Game 4 jersey, Series MVP Manny Ramirez ‘s bat used to tie a postseason record with a 17-game hitting streak, and Keith Foulke’s spikes worn as he threw the ball for the final out as well as the ball itself on loan from Doug Mientkiewicz.

2005 - In his first public appearance, Yankee first baseman Jason Giambi apologizes to his teammates, Yankee fans and to baseball fans everywhere for letting them down last season. The All-Star first baseman, however, never uses the word steroids as he accepts full responsibility for the controversy.

2005 - Avoiding arbitration, Roy Oswalt (20-10, 3.49) and the Astros agree to a two-year, $16.9 million deal. The 27-year-old right-hander has posted a 63-27 (.700) record during his four-year tenure in Houston.

2006 - Although recently acquired Alfonso Soriano (.268, 36, 104) of the Nationals loses his salary arbitration case, the former Texas Rangers infielder sets a record for the highest salary ever awarded by the process. The All-star second baseman, who is being asked to play the outfield in Washington, will receive $10 million (he asked for $12 million) surpassing the $8.2 million awarded to Andruw Jones in his successful 2001 arbitration hearing with the Braves.

2009 - The Rangers announce the signing of Andruw Jones to a minor League contract with an invitation to spring training. The ten-time Gold Glove center fielder, trying to restore his reputation after two horrendous seasons with the Dodgers, will try to join the crowded Texas outfield which includes David Murphy in left, Josh Hamilton in center, Nelson Cruz in right and Marlon Byrd slotted to get substantial playing time in all three positions.

2011 - Avoiding arbitration, Josh Hamilton agrees to a $24 million, two-year contract with the Rangers. The American League MVP, despite missing the last month of the regular season due to broken ribs, hit a major league best .359 along with 32 homers and 100 RBIs.

2012 - The St. Louis Cardinals signed Scott Linebrink as a free agent.

2015 - At a meeting initiated by Alex Rodriguez, the much-maligned Yankee slugger apologizes to the team's front office for the turbulence which has swirled around the organization during the last few years, according to a joint statement released by the team. The attendees for the 'honest and frank discussion’ of the issues included managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner, club president Randy Levine, general manager Brian Cashman, assistant GM Jean Afterman, and Jim Sharp, A-Rod’s legal counsel.

On February 11 in Baseball History...

1915 - New York Giants president Harry Hempstead rejects the International League's request for permission to put a team in the Bronx. The shift of the IL's Jersey City to the nearby borough, already the home to the Yankees, was conceived as a way to prop up the failing minor league franchise and perhaps to thwart the invasion of the Federal League into the Big Apple.

1965 -  Braves officials, who already intend to move to Atlanta for 1966, propose to pay five cents from each ticket sold to a fund for the purpose of bringing a new major league team to Milwaukee. Teams, Inc., a civic group, accepts the offer, buys out the park for Opening Day, and stages Stand Up for Milwaukee Day.

1974 - Forty-eight major-league players invoke the new arbitration procedure established to settle contract differences. Pitcher Dick Woodson (seeking a contract for $29,000) and the Twins (offering $23,000) are the first to present their respective cases to Detroit lawyer and labor arbitrator Harry H. Platt, who must decide on one of the monetary amounts presented. Woodson wins.

2005 - Jose Canseco’s controversial book, Juiced, is made available in certain markets in anticipation to his appearance on CBS’s Sixty Minutes.     1930 - After leading his A's to a world championship, Connie Mack becomes the first Philadelphian sports figure to receive the prestigious Edward W. Bok Prize.     2003 - Federal Judge James Holderman has given the Cubs and the owners of rooftop bleachers which provide fans a view of Wrigley Field a year to settle their dispute. The 1993 samples were collected by MLB in an effort to gauge the prevalence of steroid use with players and owners agreeing the results would be confidential.

On February 14 in Baseball History...

1887 -  For a record price of $10,000, the Cubs, then known as the White Stockings, sell future current NL batting champ and future Hall of Famer Mike Kelly to the Beaneaters. The popular box office draw, who will earn his nickname King while playing in Boston, will continue to be productive hitting .311 for a three-year span during his first tenure with the team.

1928 - The American Legion baseball program, on the brink of bankruptcy, receives a pledge of $50,000 from Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis and the MLB Advisory Council to continue its development a national championship program for teenagers. With the much-needed funding, Legion Baseball will continue in 1928, and the following season, teams from every state and the District of Columbia will participate in the youth tournament.

1934 - After playing 19 years with the Senators, Sam Rice ends his career playing one season with the Indians. He will amass 2,987 career hits in his two decades as a player.

1945 - After forty-five years in professional baseball, Braves president Bob Quinn retires as the team's general manager. John, his son, will take his place.

1957 - Ten years after the integration of major league baseball, the Georgia Senate unanimously approves a bill which prohibits blacks from playing baseball with whites except at religious gatherings. Less than a decade later, the Braves will move its franchise from Milwaukee to Atlanta, the state's capital.

1959 - The Orioles buy 32-year old veteran Whitey Lockman from the Giants. The ‘Birds’ will trade the first baseman to the Reds in June for Walt Dropo, who also plays first base.

1976 - The Braves send Valentine's Day cards to their season-ticket holders and the media. The Braves finished in fifth place in 1975, 40½ games behind Cincinnati. Atlanta will finish the 1976 season in last place, 32 games behind the Reds, but they are first in rhyming. Their card reads: Rose is a Red Morgan's one, too. They finished first, Like we wanted to. But last year's behind us; We're happy to say. Now we're tied for first, Happy Valentine's Day.

1996 - Kevin McClatchy and his group of investors purchase the Pirates from the Pittsburgh Associates. The deal includes the condition of having to build a baseball-only ballpark in Pittsburgh within five years.

2001 - The Ford C. Frick Award, named in memory of the former baseball commissioner who was a broadcaster, will be given to Marlins' radio announcer Rafael Ramirez during Hall of Fame induction ceremonies this summer. 'Felo', who began his 56-year career broadcasting games in Cuba, has been in the Miami broadcast booth since the team's inaugural season in 1993.

2001 - According to the Detroit Free Press major league baseball is informing umpires to remove pitchers from the game, without warning, who deliberately throw a beanball at a batter's head. The crackdown, according to officials, is a clarification and reinforcement of an existing rule.

2002 - The Tigers sign Dmitri Young (.302, 21, 69) to a four-year contract with two team options. The Tigers traded outfielder Juan Encarnacion (.242, 12, 52) and minor league right hander Luis Pineda in December to acquire the first baseman/outfielder from the Reds.

2003 - After much speculation, the Chunichi Dragons return Kevin Millar to the Marlins for an undisclosed amount of money for relinquishing its rights. After reconsidering an offer from the Red Sox, the outfielder had a change of heart and didn't want to play for the Japanese Central League team.

2005 - The Twins sign Johan Santana (20-6, 2.61), who was eligible for arbitration, to a four-year deal. Last season, the 25-year-old southpaw became the first Venezuelan to win the Cy Young Award.

2007 - For first time at Wrigley Field, the Cubs will allow ads on the green doors which are located in the ivy in the left- and right-field bleachers according to Jay Blunk, director of marketing and sales. Although the team has been approached by other companies, Under Armour, whose company spokesman is newly acquired outfielder Alfonso Soriano, is the "right fit" for the 7-by-12 foot signage featuring the performance apparel’s signature logo.

2009 - The Angels and Bobby Abreu (.296, 20, 100) agree to a $5 million, one-year deal. The 34-year-old free-agent outfielder, taking a significant pay cut after having a solid season with the Yankees last season, is expected to add some much-needed punch from the left side for the AL West champions.

2011 - The Yankees come to terms with free-agent Andruw Jones on a $1.5 million, one-year contract, eliminating the likelihood of the team resigning Johnny Damon. 'The Curaçao Kid', best known for his outstanding outfield defense for the Braves at the start of his career, will spend two seasons in the Bronx, before finishing his 17-year major league tenure with a lifetime .254 batting average.

2011 - Avoiding arbitration, Carlos Marmol agrees to a three-year, $20 million deal with the Cubs. The 28-year-old closer saved 38 games in 43 opportunities last season along with compiling a 2-3 record and an ERA of 2.55.

2012 - The Chicago White Sox signed Kosuke Fukudome as a free agent.

2014 - Avoiding arbitration, 24 year-old outfielder Jason Heyward and the Braves agree to a two-year, $13.3 million deal. After the season, Atlanta will trade their 2007 first-round pick (14th overall) along with right-handed reliever Jordan Walden to the Cardinals for right-handers Tyrell Jenkins and Shelby Miller.

2014 - Freddie Freeman agrees to a franchise-record eight-year, $135 million contract, surpassing the six-year, $90 million deal the Braves gave Chipper Jones in 2000. The 24 year-old All-Star first baseman, who finished fifth in the MVP balloting this season, has hit .285 during his four years with the team, annually averaging 17 home runs and 70 RBIs.

On February 15 in Baseball History...

1916 - The Yankees buy Frank Home Run Baker from the Athletics for $37,500. He had sat out the 1915 season.

1931 - The spring training site of the Yankees in St. Petersburg is renamed Miller Huggins Field in honor of the team's late manager.

1934 - Radio broadcast rights are granted to Boston, Chicago, Detroit and Cincinnati.

1946 - Hank Greenberg signs a Tiger contract for $60,000. Three days later he will marry New York department store heiress, Coral Gimbel.

1956 - The Pirates and the Kansas City A's cancel an exhibition game in Birmingham, Alabama, because of a local ordinance barring black players from playing against white players.

1964 - Cubs second baseman Ken Hubbs, twenty-two, is found dead in his private plane which crashed on February 13, 1964, near Provo, Utah, while en route to Colton, California. As a rookie in 1962, Hubbs had played in 78 consecutive games without making an error.

1973 - In a national poll, Phillies' southpaw Steve Carlton beats out golf legend Jack Nicklaus to win the $15,000 diamond-studded gold buckled Hickok Belt, an award given to the top "Professional Athlete of the Year". Last season's National League Cy Young Award winner joins an elite list of a previous recipients that include Willie Mays, Sandy Koufax, Jim Brown, Rocky Marciano, and Arnold Palmer.

1990 - A thirty-two day lockout begins as major league owners refuse to open spring training camp without reaching a new Basic Agreement with the players. The season will be delayed one week due to the lock-out.

2001 - After turning down the Mets offer of salary arbitration that at the very least would have been worth $2 to $3 million, Bobby Jones signs a one-year free agent deal with the Padres for only $625,000. The 31-year old right-hander, 11-6 last year with New York, will lose 19 games for the Padres this season.

2003 - After the Dragons released him for an undisclosed payment, the Red Sox acquire Kevin Millar (.306, 16, 57) from the Marlins. The 31-year-old first baseman-outfielder, who had originally agreed to a two-year, $6.2 million deal to play in Japan, had a change of heart after at first rejecting Boston's waiver claim for him made in January .

2006 - According to Adam Katz, Sammy Sosa's agent, the 37-year old slugger will probably retire eleven homers shy of becoming the fifth major leaguer to hit 600 round-trippers. Earlier, the Dominican outfielder rejected a non-guaranteed contract from the Nationals that included performance bonuses.

2006 - Former Dodgers starter, Jeff Weaver (14-11, 4.22) agrees to a one-year contract with the other team with Los Angeles in its name. The deal for the last major player left on the free agent market is worth $8,325,000, and the 29-year old right-hander can earn an additional $600,000 in performance bonuses for innings pitched and game starts with the Angels.

2007 - Ending more than two months of speculation about Barry Bonds’ deal with the Giants, the commissioner office's approves the one-year contract worth $15.8 million. The 42-year-old slugger had reached a preliminary agreement with the team early in December, but finalizing the contract was delayed when language about promotional appearances and a clause was added stating the Giants could void the deal if the outfielder was indicted due to the use of steroids.

2007 - The Yankees announce the team will wear black armbands on the left sleeve of their uniforms in memory of teammate Cory Lidle. The 34-year old right-hander, along with flight instructor Tyler Stanger, died when their plane crashed into a 52-story high-rise apartment building in Manhattan on a rain-swept afternoon last October.

2008 - The Seattle Mariners signed Greg Norton as a free agent.

2009 - The Cleveland Indians signed Tony Graffanino as a free agent.

2011 - Stan Musial receives the Presidential Medal of Freedom, an award in which the honorees are selected by the sitting president, from Barack Obama. The Cardinals' legend, who benefitted from local grass-root efforts on his behalf, joins major leaguers Hank Aaron, Moe Berg, Jackie Robinson, Roberto Clemente and Ted Williams, as a recipient of the most prestigious honor given to a United States civilian.

2012 - The Rays and Joe Maddon agree on a three-year contract extension that will keep the two-time American League manager of the year with Tampa through the 2015 season. During his six-year tenure with the club, the 58-year old skipper has compiled a 495-477 (.509) record leading the team to the postseason three times in the last four years, including an American League pennant in 2008.

2014 - The Chicago Cubs signed Emilio Bonifacio as a free agent.

2014 - The San Francisco Giants signed Mark Teahen as a free agent.

2016 -  "Baseball is known as our national pastime, but the game has deep roots and a rich history here in New York State. From the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in storied Cooperstown to the Mets and Yankees — the pinnacles of Major League Baseball, to our recently crowned Little League World Series champions from Maine-Endwell, New York State is clearly the epicenter of baseball greatness. It is time that we formally recognize baseball as our official state sport." - JAMES SEWARD, New York state senator.

New York State Sen. James Seward (R-Milford), thanks to a suggestion from a group of fourth-graders at Cooperstown Elementary School, announces he has introduced legislation (S.4288) to designate baseball as New York’s official state sport. In a press release, Hall of Fame president Jeff Idelson says he "enthusiastically supports” the proposed bill, citing Cooperstown serves as the spiritual home of baseball.

On February 16 in Baseball History...

1924 - Boston Braves' third baseman Tony Boeckel becomes the first major leaguer to be killed in an automobile accident when he dies from injuries received as a passenger yesterday in San Diego. Yankee outfielder Bob Meusel, also a passenger of the car driven by L.A. theater man Bob Albright, escapes without any serious injuries.

1950 - The BBWAA doesn't select any players for the Hall of Fame this season with former Giants Mel Ott (69%) and Bill Terry (63%) being the top vote getters, but falling short on being named on 75% of the writers' ballots that is required for induction. 'Master Mel' will get the nod next season, and 'Memphis Bill' will be enshrined in 1954.

1952 - After 39 years in the major leagues, 21 as a player with the Colonels and Pirates and 18 years as coach with Pittsburgh, Hall of Fame shortstop Honus Wagner retires. The 'Flying Dutchman' won eight batting titles, the most in National League history until tied by Tony Gwynn in 1997, and he also led the league in stolen bases for five seasons.

1953 - Brooklyn, Cincinnati, Milwaukee, and Philadelphia participate in a four-way trade that sends five players to new clubs. Joe Adc0ck (Reds) and Jim Pendleton (Dodgers) will now play for the Braves, Earl Torgeson (Braves) goes to the Phillies, Rocky Bridges (Dodgers) is now a Red, with Russ Meyer (Phillies) joining the Dodgers.

1967 - Red Ruffing, as a result of getting the most votes in a run-off election, is selected to be in the the Hall of Fame. The writers, who did not did not initially elect anyone, give the nod to the former Yankee pitcher, author of 273 major league wins, as the top vote-getter on the second ballot that listed the 20 players with the highest percentage.

1989 - Orel Hershiser becomes baseball's first three-million dollar man when he signs a three-year $7.9 million contract with the Dodgers. The 'Bulldog' will earn $3,166,167 in 1991.

1996 - General Mills announces a special edition of a Wheaties cereal box honoring the 75th Commemorative Year of the Negro Leagues that will feature superstars Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson and 'Cool Papa' Bell. In 1934, Yankee first baseman Lou Gehrig became the first athlete depicted on a box of the Breakfast of Champions.

2001 - Yankee premier reliever, Mariano Rivera (7-4, 2.85, 36 saves) signs a four-year approximately $40 million contract with the Bronx Bombers. The 31-year old Panama native surpassed Dennis Eckersley's major league record with 16 saves in post-season games.

2003 - Although banned by major league baseball for a Cooperstown induction, Pete Rose becomes a member of the Ted Williams Hitters Hall of Fame. 'Charlie Hustle' joins 1998 inductee Shoeless Joe Jackson, who is also banned from becoming a member of the Hall of Fame.

The 31-year old outfielder, who will retire at the end of the season after compiling a lifetime batting average of .277 during his nine-year tenure in the major leagues, leaves with a 293-game errorless streak intact.

2004 - The Rangers trade Alex Rodriguez along with cash to the Yankees in exchange for Alfonso Soriano and a player to be named later, Joaquin Arias. The deal comes on the heels of the Red Sox's inability to land the AL MVP in a swap with Texas for Manny Ramirez due to the players' association's objection because of the need to restructure A-Rod's existing contract as a result of the tentative transaction.

2007 - Baseball’s Playing Rules Committee approves several changes making it the first time since 1996 that the rules of the game have been altered. A ten game suspension for a player who scuffs a baseball, elimination of tie games which must be halted (after the fifth inning) due to weather by resuming the game before the next scheduled start at the same ballpark, players may no longer go into a dugout to make a catch, and allowing pitchers to wear undistracting multicolored gloves are among new rules which will start this season.

On February 17 in Baseball History...

1891 - The American Association withdraws from the National Agreement thus starting a war with the National League. The AA moves its Chicago team to Cincinnati to compete with the NL team.

1900 - In lieu of unpaid alimony, Mary H. VonDerbeck becomes the owner of the American League franchise in Detroit. Her ex-husband will later regain control of the team.

1937 - Babe Dahlgren is bought by the Yankees from the Red Sox. The California native will become the player who replaces Lou Gehrig.

1943 - Without notifying the team, Joe DiMaggio enlists in the United States Army Air Forces and will not play for the Yankees again until 1946. Although the Bronx Bomber outfielder asked for no special treatment, he will spend most of his time out of harm's way playing baseball in America.

1964 - Former White Sox shortstop Luke Appling is voted into the Hall of Fame in the runoff election. Appling won two batting titles and played 2,422 games in twenty years with the White Sox. 'Old Aches and Pains' holds the single-season highest average for his position hitting .388 in 1936.

1965 - Commissioner Ford Frick suspends U.S. - Japan baseball relations until the dispute over Japanese San Francisco pitcher Masanori Murakami's contract with the Giants is resolved.

1976 - Future National League Cy Young Award winner Mike Scott of Pepperdine pitches a perfect game for Pepperdine against California Lutheran University. The right-hander, who will throw a no-hitter as a major leaguer for the Astros, will be selected by the Mets in the second round in the June draft.

1987 - Yankee first baseman Don Mattingly wins his $1.975 arbitration case breaking the record for the largest amount ever awarded to a player set by Jack Morris just four days ago.

1995 - Unwilling to be part of an inferior product placed on the field and as a show of support for his players, Tigers skipper Sparky Anderson is suspended without pay when he refuses to manage replacement players in spring training during 1995 work stoppage. The popular pilot will resume his duties when the strike is resolved, but will 'retire', some believe not voluntarily, at the end of the season.

2003 - Avoiding arbitration, the Braves and 36-year old righty Greg Maddux (16-6, 2.62) agree the largest one-year contract in major league history. The $14.75 million deal for the four-time Cy Young Award winner eclipses the $12 million given to David Cone by Yankees in 2000.

2003 - After his body temperature soars to 108 degrees, Orioles pitching prospect Steve Belcher dies of multi-organ failure following a spring training workout in Fort Lauderdale. Early speculation is the 23-year old expectant father's death may have been caused by ephedrine, the dietary supplement linked to heatstroke and heart attacks.

2005 - The Chicago White Sox signed Raul Casanova as a free agent.

2006 - White Sox skipper Ozzie Guillen issues an apology for his comments published in Sports Illustrated criticizing Alex Rodriguez’s indecision concerning which country the Yankee All-star would represent in the World Baseball Classic. A-Rod, who was born in the United States, thought at first he would play for the Dominican Republic due to his parents’ heritage, then decided he was not going to play at all before choosing to play for Team USA.

2007 - In a poll conducted by his hometown newspaper, more than half of the respondants thought Carl Pavano would not bounce back with the Yankees this year. The reader poll, which was posted on myrecordjournal.com site, revealed 54.5% believe the Yankee pitcher would not overcome his slow start with the team while 45.5% stated he would have a comeback season.

2008 - The Colorado Rockies signed Scott Podsednik as a free agent.

2009 - The Marlins announced a contract extension for manager Fredi Gonzalez through the end of 2011. The South Florida native, who became just the third skipper in franchise history to compile a winning campaign, guiding the club to an 84-77 record, was named The Sporting News Manager of the Year last season.

2011 - Jose Bautista and the Blue Jays come to terms on a $64-million, five-year contract extension. The 30 year-old thirdbaseman/outfielder, last season's major league leader with 54 home runs, set a record for the largest increase in round-trippers for single season in baseball history, hitting 41 more homers than his total of 13 in 2009.

2015 - The Anaheim Angels signed Matt Lindstrom as a free agent.

2015 - The Baltimore Orioles signed Jayson Nix as a free agent.

2015 - The Detroit Tigers signed Casper Wells as a free agent.
