I hate the Wild Card.

No doubt exacerbated by the fact that the Wild Card team has home field advantage in the WS.That struck me as "odd". . .and by "odd" I mean "retarted".

Their league did with the all star game... and we know that means something now.

Yeah, I know, "This time it counts" nonsense. Still odd that we've gotten to the point that the WC team gets home field. Ironically, wasn't Prince Fielder instrumental in accomplishing this?

Speaking of odd, the Cardinals:

Were 2nd in the league in blown saves

Led the league in GIDPs  (that also means they had a lot of guys on base, but still. . .)

Also, did any of their pitchers make it through the 5th in that series vs. Milw?

Are we sure a horrible Wild Card team never ended up with home field advantage back in the days where it simply alternated leagues.

It should be the interleague record of the league.

So if the AL won 55% of the interleague games, then the AL should get home field advantage.

I agree. That makes more sense.

that would never work unless you have the DH in both leagues... the NL is always at a disadvantage playing in AL parks...

Well really isn't there some fancy (or non-fancy!) way of comparing the two individual teams going to the WS and basing it on that?

The NL always has the option of adopting the DH.

If their brand of baseball is "better," it should work itself out on the field.

I'm not sure I get this logic. Wouldn't the AL teams be the one with a bigger disadvantage playing in NL parks? When playing with the DH rule, the NL teams GAIN an extra hitter in their lineup. Yet when playing in NL parks, the NL pitchers are used to hitting. Most of them may not be any good but are still surely better than AL pitchers who almost NEVER have to walk up to the plate. To me, the NL has the bigger advantage.

Not really - basically, you're choosing between having Adam Dunn in your lineup or having Neifi Perez in your lineup in your example.

Yeah, the NL teams "gain" an extra hitter, but that extra hitter is a hitter who (in theory) wasn't good enough to be able to earn an everyday spot.  Contrast that to the AL, where a DH is often a very very good hitter.

What Joe said... but lets not use Adam Dunn as the example.. lets use Ortiz.

When bosox play interleague game at home they get to play Ortiz, NL team plays its best utility bat (still not as good as a DH in most cases).

Sure in the NL parks the AL has to bat a pitcher that normally doesnt bat... but what are you really giving up from a pitchers at bat compared to what the AL team is gaining when having the NL team visit.

I have zero interest in the upcoming World Series.  I will not watch it.  Like Loveland, I have come to despise the Wild Card structure.  I hate the fact that a 90-win team has gotten into the World Series.  The Cardinals don't deserve to be there.  They were only the best NL team for the final month or so of the season, NOT the best NL team for the whole season.  And the Rangers... well, how could I root for Texas and that overrated ass, Nolan Ryan?

There are too many teams allowed to make the playoffs.  For that matter, there are too many franchises in major league baseball, period.  But that's another discussion.

Reportedly, your friend and mine, Bud Selig, wants to add yet another tier to the playoffs, allowing more teams in, and drawing out the playoffs over a longer period.  I say, NO.  Go the other way.  Abolish divisions entirely, play balanced schedules, and have the top two teams from each league at the end of the regular season go to the playoffs.  If there's a tie in the number of wins among the top league leaders, have one-game playoffs involving those teams that are tied.

Under this structure, your NL playoff teams this year would have been the Phillies (102 wins) and the Brewers (96 wins); in the AL, the Yankees (97 wins) and the Rangers (96 wins).    No, not every region in the country needs to be represented in the playoffs.    MLB doesn't need multi-tier playoffs that resemble the nightmare of the NHL.   Simply, whoever wins the most games should go to the playoffs and the whole process should be streamlined.

I know that the 2011 Cardinals are not the worst example of a team with a relatively low number of wins making it to the World Series; if I remember correctly, that dubious honor goes to the 1987 Twins.  Still, the Cards shouldn't be there.  Baseball's playoff structure is a travesty and it unfairly rewards teams that get hot at the very end of the year.

I was using Dunn as a comparison to an AL pitcher, and Neifi as a comparison to an NL pitcher... one with theoretically better batting abilities.

Agree, Furio.  The watered-down playoff structure has to go.  Or at the very least, make the Division Series a best-of-seven.  It's too easy for lesser teams to take 3-of-5.

I kind of like ONE extra tier, ie ALCS, then WS.

Maybe you could do it with two leagues, balanced schedule, and top 2 teams go into playoffs? Even that's unfair to the top team to an extent though.

Although I'm not sure I give a s h i t. I want to be entertained, and I like watching playoff baseball.  .  .  so suck it purists.

Home field advantage in the WS should be determined by a complex algorithm based primarily on the hotness of the players' wives.

Lefty reliever Arthur Rhodes of the St. Louis Cardinals is sitting pretty in this World Series. After twenty years pitching with no World Series rings, this year he is guaranteed TWO of them.

He started out the season as  a member of the Texas Rangers and after his release in early August by Texas he signed with the Cardinals.  This means he will receive BOTH a winner's and loser's 2011 World Series ring and will receive World Series shares from both the Cardinals and the Rangers.
