At least the criticism of the "weak" AL Central Division has died down.

Not sure which is worse:  Bashing the AL Central as weak if Detroit had been eliminated, or having to listen to the sportsclones fawn over Verlander and Cabrera because they made it to the Series.  This is Baltimore's fault.

I have hardly heard a peep out of the media about Detroit.

I've just been told that somebody beat the Yankees. Good for them, whoever managed to do that.

AJ the in-studio analyst... they're talking about the Chris Carpenter play from a few games ago where he and Allen Craig got mixed up.

Everyone else is sitting there saying, "Carpenter should have stepped this way to throw to first," or "Craig screwed the play up by coming in toward the ball initially."

AJ (the last to speak) just says, "guys - this is an easy play. The base runner is inside the line, all he has to do is hit the runner in the back with the ball. It's a dumb rule, but that's the rule. He'll be out every time."

Gotta love AJ.

Have I expressed how much I hate the playoff structure?  It only rewards the teams that get hot at the end, not those that were consistently good all season.  A one-game playoff to decide the wild-card berth?  An initial playoff series (best of five) that takes only three wins to advance?  All of those contests can be fluky.  One-game playoffs and short series are not true measures of a team's talent.

NO.  Go back to two divisions in each league.  Eliminate the stupid Wild Cards (and contract MLB to 28 teams or even 24 while we're at it; not every town in the US deserves a MLB team).  The winners of each league's division, the ones with the highest regular-season win total (wow, what a concept) play in a best-of-seven series (not best of five).  Then, the pennant winners go to the World Series (best of seven, or hell, make it best of nine to make sure the best team really does take it all).

It only rewards the teams that get hot at the end

But if a team happens to get hot at the right time (in the playoffs) why shouldn't they be rewarded? If they're hot and keep winning, their wins aren't any less deserving just because the opposing team had a better run during the season. Why penalize a team just because they got hot at the absolute best time? That doesn't seem very fair, imo.

And also, if the other team was more consistently good during the season, they should be just as good now. If not, oh well. That's baseball. That's why the games are played on the field, not on paper.

Just my opinion..

So the first 140, 150, 160 games shouldn't count?

I almost feel like with the way the playoffs are structured, with so many teams that have a chance, just give all teams an arbitrary .500 regular season record and skip right to the playoffs.

What they're doing now in baseball reeks too much of football.  One game means too much.  Baseball is supposed to be a marathon, with the good teams hanging in 'til the end.

The Tigers were totally opportunistic at the end of this year but weren't very good all season long.

I have a bit of a problem with an 87- or 88-win team being considered the best in baseball.

I guess I just see it differently. The regular season record is what it takes to get to the postseason. Once you're in, anything can happen. So yeah, the Tigers were mediocre most of the season but they always had a good team and are now clicking at the best possible time. I see nothing wrong with saying they're the best team in baseball if they win the world series, regardless of their regular season record.

Give them credit, they manned-up when it counted. (I don't know if manned-up is a word but you know what I mean).

And by the way, if the Sox were in the exact same situation as the Tigers now, I'd have a problem with people questioning our team being in the world series. My response would be what I said above, "hey, we're hot and playing great ball and we deserve to be there."

I kinda agree with Fury..

Short series favor teams that are top heavy in talent but have a glaring weakness... ie Detroit...

It should be about the best team period... ie '05 white sox.

I sort of like the 1 game wild card game. But I believe the next round should start at 7 games, no more 5 games series. Wild card team gets hurt a bit in that they cannot go with their ace 3 times in that 7 game series, assuming they used him in the 1 game playoff.

I do agree that each round should be a 7-game series.

So I admit that I pay very little attention to the Giants so I don't know much about them but I do know who Tim Lincecum is. He's now in the bullpen? What happened to him?

That's it? No injury speculation or anything? He just one day was not that good of a pitcher anymore?

Maybe the guy was getting a big ego or something and this was the baseball gods' way of humbling him.

Too many innings. They moved him to the BP and he seems to have gotten "it" back.

This year his FB was down... and he was steadily killing my fantasy team.

I'm with Fury on this one.  The road to the WS should be harder for the teams with lower records.

If we are going to go the hockey/basketball route. Chop the season to 140 games and let in the top 8 teams in each league... then have a second season worth of playoff games... hah.

I'm a bit surprised that the Tigers went with Fister instead of Scherzer for Game 2.  I understand the desire to have Scherzer pitch the first game at Detroit, but the decision to use Fister in this all-important game could well put the Tigers in a 0-2 hole.

Not that I'd cry if that happened.
