I'm pretty sure never. Officially, it's 2014, but I'm reasonably certain that Mike Illitch will pay whatever it takes to keep him in a Tigers' uniform forever.

I know. I just remember reading something once before where Verlander said he was very interested in testing the free agent market when he's available. Just stinks that the Tigers truly not only have the best pitcher in the game but the best hitter in the game, too.

How sick are the Nationals fans feeling this morning? The Strasburg ordeal aside, they had every chance in the world to advance to the NLCS. They had an early 6-0 lead and still had a 2-run lead going into the 9th. The Cardinals, on the other hand, have to be my 2nd favorite team. I have some family that lives in St. Louis so I've always liked them for that reason, but still, that organization is so successful and for the most part they have a team that's easy to root for....not to mention a great fan base!

I don't like either of the AL teams so I'm pulling for the Cards all the way now. I just don't like the Giants at all for some reason so if the Cards get eliminated, this will be a boring World Series for me.

As for the Tigers-Yankees, go Yanks.

I am for the Yanks/Cards now. Either one. As you said, Cardinals have a great fan base, maybe 2nd best to the Yankees. Great organization from top down.

SoxRule, you forgot to include that the only thing that p i s s e s off Cub fans more than seeing the Cards in the WS is the Sox being there.  So since the Sox didn't make it ...

Heh, that's just a bonus, PW. I really do like the Cards' organization. The Cubs wish to be them one day!   ;D

And I'll add that I would love for the Sox to be like them someday, too.

I was at the game and it was as devestateing to me as any Sox loss ever. To be in that park with everyone so thrilled at one moment expecting a clincher, and riot cop/horses lining up outside the park, then see it snatched away with the other team winning was absolutely devestating.

Rizzo deserves all the grief he gets. What an absolute travesty to sit Strasburg. The Braves kept Medlen in relief until midseason to keep his innings down, but he was available for playoffs. Not that Rizzo should not have made sure his innings were kept to a certain amount, but be smarter than to have him miss the playoffs. And that bunk that playoff innings are even tougher on the arm, what a crock.

Reminiscent of another playoff series. Back in 2003. Heh.

But in 2003, the cubs were never within one strike to win it, they were a few innings away. Nats and fans watched about 10 potential end of game pitches where on each one of them they could have won it. And on each pitch the dugout was poised to run out on the field if a strike was called.

I don't think that has ever happened.

msf, agree with you on Rizzo, but I think Strassburg probably would not have made a difference the way things worked out. It was a case of nearly an entire bullpen faltering, and Gio, Zimmerman, and Edwin sucking.

I think the nearly-clinching thing happened in the WS last year, no?

Could be, but it seemed there were more potential game ending pitches last night, with three batters after two outs seeing lots of pitches.

Yankees just got hosed, but people tell me that's what makes baseball good... is that the umpires inadvertently screw people over all of the time.

Is this like a "guess the moran commentator" game?  If so, I'm going to go with Harold Reynolds.  I was tempted to say Joe Morgan, but it just seemed a bit too obvious.

No, it was a dig at the sanctimonious sportswriters who've decided that the "human element" should supersede things like the accuracy of calls in crucial situations.

Give managers the ability to challenge a call, have the umpires look at a video replay (that takes 30 seconds, max), and make a decision. It's a heck of a lot faster than managers and umpires yelling at each other for 3 minutes.

The obvious flaw in Joeconners argument is that it pre-suposses that the manager on the losing side of a replay, or changed call, won't then proceed to argue for 3 minute.  Or longer.

Because just knowing the call was made off a replay would have pacified Billy Martin

What grounds would he have to argue it on?

Heck - let the managers watch the replay with the umpires.

Have you seen the reversed home run calls get argued for 3 minutes (or longer)? It's reviewed, reversed, and that's it.
