Alexei seeking replacement for lost gold medal

By Scott Merkin / MLB.com | 03/01/12 5:25 PM EST

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- From time to time, Alexei Ramirez logs on to his computer and takes a quick trip over to eBay.

Ramirez is not in search of a slightly used DVD copy of "Casino" or a signed picture of Christina Applegate or an authentic Paul Konerko rookie card, which all probably could be had for the right price on the site.

No, the White Sox shortstop's pursuit falls upon one item -- a gold medal from the 2004 Summer Olympic Games held in Athens, Greece. That particular medal belongs to Ramirez as part of Cuba's champion baseball squad.

But in Ramirez's travels from the Dominican Republic to Miami to Chicago, after departing Cuba and signing with the White Sox prior to the 2008 season, Ramirez's gold medal disappeared. It was placed in a special case with approximately 15 other medals won during Ramirez's competitive days in his homeland.

Ventura's fresh outlook
The White Sox's new skipper is bringing a new style to the South Side

By Jerry Crasnick | ESPN.com | Updated: March 15, 2012, 1:16 PM ET

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Robin Ventura, the 39th manager in Chicago White Sox history, subscribes to the Bobby Cox theory of media relations: Workplace squabbles should be kept in-house, and any disagreements should be addressed in a publicity vacuum. Even players who jog out ground balls or put their own interests above the good of the team will receive their verbal spankings in the solitude of his office. If they want to go out and vent to the cameras afterward, that's their business.

As anyone with access to Twitter, YouTube, WGN, Chicago talk radio or a Tribune or Sun-Times subscription can attest, that's a radical departure from Ventura's predecessor, Ozzie Guillen. Just as Larry Bowa begat Terry Francona in Philadelphia and the mild-mannered Ron Roenicke succeeded the old-school Ken Macha in Milwaukee, the White Sox are doing a stylistic 180 with their manager.

"Anybody next to Ozzie is going to be a big difference," says long-time White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper. "Everybody knows that Ozzie shoots from the lip, and Robin is the antithesis of that. He's the bizarro-world opposite. I don't know how much thought went into it, to tell you the truth. But when I first heard he was hired, I thought, 'This is a pretty smart idea.'"

Now there is someone who really knows the history of Dick Allen. Remember having to have his brother Hank on the team too. He was horrible.

It's funny though, he was Wee Jeter's favorite player! I was at that game where he hit that rising liner into the CF stands. . .but I guess everyone says they were at that game.

Why did this topic get pinned?

I think it was done accidentally by JoeyC.  It's now been returned to 'unsticky'.

DirecTV subscribers could lose Tribune programming
Failed negotiations could mean no more Cubs, White Sox or "Vampire Diaries"

By Robert Channick Tribune reporter - 6:47 p.m. CDT, March 26, 2012

Tribune Co. television stations in 16 markets across the country, including WGN in Chicago, are threatening to cut off programming to millions of DirecTV subscribers after negotiations over retransmission fees broke down Monday.

The contract is set to expire March 31 and Chicago-based Tribune Co. is seeking compensation from the satellite TV provider to carry its programming, something it does not receive. Without resolution, the plug will be pulled Saturday at midnight.

At stake is everything from Chicago Cubs and White Sox baseball on WGN America to "The Vampire Diaries" on local CW Network affiliates. Millions of DirecTV subscribers would no longer receive 23 local Tribune stations and WGN America, Tribune’s national cable network.

loved the episode where the vampires descended upon the White Sox but went away unsatisfied because the offense was so anemic.

Suburban fans, bars caught in dispute between Tribune, DirecTV

By Anna Marie Kukec - Daily Herald - rticle posted: 4/2/2012 7:29 PM

Champps Americana sports bar in Lincolnshire prides itself on offering major league sports for guests while they enjoy a burger and a beer. But when customers arrived on Sunday and Monday, even a cold one didn’t soothe those fans or the bar’s management.

Bar Manager Mike Runyan discovered that WGN programming, which included those sought-after sports programs, was pulled from its provider, DirecTV.

“When DirecTV had negotiation issues in the past with various channels, we were able to plan ahead and we used Dish Network to provide the games to our guests,” Runyan said. “But this time, it was a last-minute issue and we didn’t have Dish. ... This could get very expensive.”

Despite the one-year contract, Champps, like other sports bars and individual subscribers, will need to rely on other means to get those games, including the Chicago Cubs opener and the Blackhawks’ playoffs, until the dispute is settled between DirecTV and Chicago-based Tribune Broadcasting Co.

This is the second time in the past six months that DirecTV subscribers have lost their favorite sports and other programming because negotiations with content providers have failed. Besides the Tribune, Comcast Sports Network (CSN), which carries the Bulls and Blackhawks as well as the Cubs and Sox, was lost last fall.

For those of you with DirecTV, WGN's first regular season telecast of the White Sox will be on Saturday night at Texas.

Tribune Broadcasting and DirecTV Reach 5-Year Deal

NEW YORK April 5, 2012 (AP)

DirecTV subscribers in 19 U.S. markets have regained access to a host of channels that had been blacked out since Sunday because of a contract impasse with Tribune Broadcasting.

The two companies said late Wednesday that they had struck a deal that will allow DirecTV Inc. to carry all of Tribune Broadcasting's local stations and WGN America for the next five years. Terms were not disclosed.

DirecTV Inc. subscribers in the markets lost access to programming ranging from "American Idol" to Major League Baseball after the previous contract with Tribune Broadcasting expired at midnight Saturday. The Tribune Broadcasting channels were restored at about 9 p.m. EDT Wednesday, DirectTV said.

Last year New Era Cap's commercials concentrated on the NY/Boston rivalry.

This year it's Cubs/White Sox.

The first commercial:
