Pitchers and Catchers report tomorrow!

Our long off-season nightmare is finally over.

So, who is reporting in the best shape of their life this year?

I might be able to answer "me" to that question. Best shape of my life not counting basic training.

MSF, that is great news... sadly for me its the opposite... i think i'm in the worst shape of my life right now.

Maybe Aaron Myette

Matt Ginter was a good starter in AA with Myette and Buehrle. I did not think Barceló was one, I thought it was Buehrle, Ginter, Myette and someone else. Wasn't the 4 horsemen their AA rotation from that year?
Barcelo, Garland, Myette and maybe Ginter. Burly was not really considered a stud in the minors. Wells may have been one.
BS on Buehrle. Pitched in Low A in 1st year (only a couple months), then promoted all the way to AA in 2nd year, and I think he made majors from there in same year and never even pitched AAA.Fogg was the other guy, Barcelo was not a 4 horseman. Buehrle, Ginter, Fogg and Biddle

http://www.thebaseballcube.com/teams/stats.asp?Y=2000&T=10110

Myette was either traded or promoted real early on, Buehrle only made it for about 20 starts and Rauch came up for 8-10 starts after Buehrle was promoted (I was there for his first start at the Dome as was his entire family). Rauch started in High A with Wright and a couple other good ones. Barcelo was in the pen for the Sox, started out in AAA. We were loaded with arms.

Burly, Ginter, Fogg & Biddle. Those were the big 4 that dominated the Southern League that one year at Birmingham.

Min is right about Burly. 1st year was in low A ball & I remember that team had a veteran catcher who told a reporter that Burly was ready for the show. Next year he spent half a year at AA before being called up.

..and here I thought Rick Flair, Arn Anderson, Ole Anderson and Tully Blanchard were the original Four Horseman.

I thought it was the Killer Bs... Buerhle, Biddle, Barcelo and Beirne.

I even bought an autographed jersey of Barcelo before he came up.

I’m putting this here just because it is so flagrant and it fits here in a perverse media bias sort of way.

I open up the Trib to a headline that says “Smooth Sailing ahead for the Cubs- at least until October”

Really?? Really?  That’s all, no I didn’t read it but got no indication it was part of the prediction game.

The Trib got rid of their White Sox beat writer.   There were multiple days in the last couple of weeks when there were zero White Sox mentions in the sports page.

“Smooth Sailing ahead for the Cubs- at least until October”

They really don't have anyone in their division to challenge them yet. The Brewers are short on starting pitching and all I kept reading all of-fseason was how they were prepared to add an impact starter, but they never did.

I don't know what the Cardinals are doing. They have like a billion dollar tv contract which should have made them chase some high end free agents but they don't appear to be doing too much to improve the team. I admit I don't know a whole lot about their system so maybe they feel they have prospects just about ready to come up and contribute.

However, the Cubs do not have much depth in pitching so if one or more of their starters or relievers goes down for an extended period, then the division could be up for grabs.

It’s just so haughty.  One of the wonders of Baseball is that you never really know.  Any team can beat any other team on a given day.  There are never worst to firsts in football yet it is almost routine in baseball, not yearly certainly but often enough that it is part of the game.

This town has watched baseball for nearly 150 years, certainly the media has a grasp on just how difficult it really is and how many good looking teams on paper turn out to be an abject failure  as they descend with a millstone on their necks to the cellar - again.

So I simply found the headline willfully pompous.  Pride goeth before a fall, let’s watch.

I will love watching them fall.

On IlliniBoard there is one guy who knows his baseball but is so into the Cubs. He predicts Schwarber and their catcher (I do not know his name, do not follow entire league like I used to) will make All Star game. I am thinking, how many cubs can make it? I think he believes their entire team will. Baez at 2B, meh, good D. The SS was horrible last year.

Maybe he left to take a job at Wheel of Fortune writing crossword puzzles.

I hadn’t really noticed, I do read the Tribune almost daily because their pay firewall is non-existent when I access via my vpn/work PC but I will admit to not pouring over spring training news.

you can easily avoid their pay firewall by blocking the cookies from chicagotribune.com

in Firefox:  Tools -> Options -> Privacy & Security -> History -> Accept cookies from websites -> click on Exceptions -> type in chicagotribune.com -> click on block -> then click on save changes

Stole this from Shoeless's facebook page. Good read.

https://www.theringer.com/mlb/2018/4/2/17187594/chicago-white-sox-redefining-tanking-cubs-astros

Although, they did not do extreme tanking every well. As that should have meant leaving Moncada down longer, and ensuring they got the #1 pick.
