White Sox think first-round pick Carson Fulmer can reach majors quickly

By Colleen Kane Chicago Tribune - June, 2015, 9:24 PM

The White Sox have found success with the last two college pitchers they drafted in the first round, and they believe they nabbed another one with big potential Monday.

The Sox selected Vanderbilt right-hander Carson Fulmer with the No. 8 pick, getting a player they had been watching since he was in high school in Florida.

Fulmer, 21, is 13-2 with a 1.82 ERA over 17 starts this season for the defending national champion Commodores, who advanced to the College World Series with a victory over Illinois on Monday. He has three complete games and 152 strikeouts in 114 innings and is one of four finalists for USA Baseball's Golden Spikes Award.

The 6-foot, 195-pound Fulmer becomes the third college pitcher the Sox have selected in the first round since 2010. The other two were Chris Sale and Carlos Rodon, both members of the major-league rotation.

Doug Laumann, Sox director of amateur scouting, said it is too soon to tell if Fulmer might help the Sox this season, but Laumann and assistant scouting director Nick Hostetler raved about Fulmer's makeup.

WLS wins White Sox radio rights

posted on June 23, 2015 at 2:00 pm by Robert Feder

In a crosstown radio coup, White Sox baseball will air on WLS AM 890 starting next season, sources said Tuesday.

Agreement on a six-year deal between the team and the Cumulus Media news/talk station is expected to be finalized this week, according to insiders. Financial terms are not known.

WLS beat out two other 50,000-watt AM stations, including CBS Radio sports/talk WSCR AM 670, which has been the radio home of the White Sox since 2006. Also vying for the broadcast rights was Tribune Media news/talk WGN AM 720.

Jose Abreu snubbed by voters, players & Ned Yost so Chris Sale will be the lone White Sox representative at the 2015 MLB All-Star Game.

Abreu wasn't snubbed. Pulhos and Fielder deserved to go ahead of him. Teixiera had six more homers, 10 more RBI's, higher OBP and better D. Abreu is not having an all-star year, and I wish he would get in better shape.

Fielder is not a first baseman anymore, he's a DH and that's why he deserving was picked as the alternate DH. Teixiera is hitting only .243.  That's not All-Star caliber.  And you're really reaching when you're using players' defensive abilities when considering All-Star worthiness.  IMO, as the defending Silver Slugger Award winner at first, Abreu deserved the spot over Teixiera.  I guess it could have been worse and Yost could have picked Eric Hosmer as the 7th Royal to the team.

People determine All-Star worthiness by several different ways.  Some players make based not on what they've done since April 1st but from what they're done over their entire career (Derek Jeter was such a pick last year and there been plenty other selections like him in the last 10 years).  Some think All-Star worthiness should be based solely on what a player has done since the start of this season.  I prefer to judge All-Star worthiness on what's a player done in the last 365 days. Namely post All-Star 2014 to the 1st half of 2015.  I'm more than willing to make exceptions for players having a phenomenal year that had a bad 2nd half last year or were injured.  Prince Fielder fits that category and Mark Teixiera does not.

2nd half 2014 + 1st half 2015:

Jose Abreu     .318/.385/.507   with 21 HRs & 78 RBI
Mark Teixeira  .217/.323/.439   with 25 HRs & 69 RBI

Hands down Jose Abreu is more worthy of the All-Star nod than Mark Teixeira.

Besides Tex is a f'n Yankee and they're been way over-represented on ASG rosters over the last 30+ years.

LOL  I'm not a Yankee hater.  I actually admire the Yankee organization and always root for them in their post-season appearances whenever the White Sox aren't involve. I liked George Steinbrenner's  ownership approach to 'sparing no expense trying to win'.  I also love their professionalism with their demanding dress code and no long hair and well groomed facial hair rules.  You'll never see a Yankee player looking like their an extra from Sons of Anarchy or a Duck Dynasty wannabe.

I'm just cognizant of the fact that over the years they have been way over represented on All-Star rosters.  Same holds true, but to a lesser extent, with the Red Sox.  Most of it is due to the national press fixation on all things Red Sox/Yankees.  Especially ESPN which usually doesn't give most other teams their fair share of coverage. In the last ten years has there ever been a single Red Sox/Yankees game that hasn't been a nationwide broadcast whether it's been on TBS, TNT, FOX, ESPN or the MLB Network?

Conor Gillaspie gone so Shoe's White Sox fandom is still alive.  Or did you mean if they EVER send Saladino done?  So if over the next three weeks he ends up hitting like Sanchez and fielding like Micah Johnson would you still quit if they send him back to Triple-A?   ;D

No, Chris Rongey is an employee of WSCR.   A post on soxtalk.com says Rob Hart (a WLS newsman & White Sox fan) was the host.  A one-time thing for him. At this time, no permanent host has been announced.  There's a link to the podcasts of past White Sox Weeklies.  The October 10th show has yet to be added:
