Just a shame that the Braves choked away their playoff spot to LaPussa's Cards.  This has probably been the first time since '91 that I've been able to pull for the Braves without feeling conflicted about it.  They've pretty much shed any ties to the perennially-in-the-playoffs teams of the 90s-00s (Chipper being the only carry-over I can think of) and their new identity is much more bearable.

IMO, at least.

Forgot about him.  I'm back to being conflicted again -- thanks, Pete.

Love it that the Cards are in. Sure, it helped that the Braves collapsed but really, after seeing the Cardinals' roster and the major injuries that happened at the beginning of the season I thought they'd be a 4th place team.

Seriously, except for the fact that our team wasn't involved, you couldn't ask for a more exciting finish to the baseball season. That was plain wild...for lack of a better word.

Everyone who thinks Boston choked this thing away is wrong.  Boston lost the Wild Card because of their awful, awful start.

Just for the sake of schadenfreude, had to go check out a Red Sox board. Hilarious:

BLOW THIS ORGANIZATION THE **** UP!!!!!TOP TO BOTTOM, EVERYONE IS HELD ACCOUNTABLE!!!! WE WANT ANSWERS!!!! WE WANT RESULTS!!!! Everything that I have said for the last 2 years is true about this team. No **** heart. Cya later Tito, Lackey, Crawford, Varitek, Salty, Drew, Wakefield, Wheeler, Albers, Jenks, Morales. Cya later Sweet Caroline. Cya later pink hats, maybe this will finally get them the **** off the bandwagon. We need the die hard, pissed off, REAL Sox fans to hold them accountable. Stop buying jerseys. Stop watching romance at fenway. Stop buying "bricks". **** this team. This is just what we need. Now maybe us fans can get our team back. Maybe now they will clean house and we can get some of that chip on the shoulder gutsy BALLPLAYERS back on this team and get these overpaid, under performing, heartless, crybaby, pussies off the team.

Those Rays and Red Sox games had to be scripted.  That was unreal, especially if you were like me and flipping between the two games.

The playoffs are anticlimactic now.  No way any of these games will match yesterday's drama.  No way.

Carl Crawford must be a wanted man in Boston today. After having a massively disappointing season, it looked like he had a chance to catch that ball the Orioles won on.

BTW - could those Rays' HRs have been any cheaper?  315 feet down the lines with a fence that's, what,  maybe 6 feet tall towards the corners?  Those would've ended up being hard foul balls 20 years ago.   But that's what you get in today's era of Super Mario Baseball...

From purely a fan's standpoint, it was one of the most exciting endings to a regular season, ever.

AL:
Tigers beat Yanks
Rays beat Rangers

ALCS:
Rays beat Tigers

NL:
Phils beat Cards
Brewers beat D-Backs

NLCS:
Phils beat Brewers

World Series:
Phils beat Rays in 6

Yanks got to play on the same field... so nothing cheap about it.

315 ft is still a cheap homer. Old Comiskey was 353 I believe

My larger point is that HRs in this day and age seem to come much too easily.  From shorter dimensions, lower walls, juiced-up balls, etc. - it cheapens the game.  Home runs used to be a pretty big deal when I grew up watching baseball, now they seem to happen every other inning.

I'm not a fan of it.

There will never be a more fitting time for Theo Epstein to become the GM of the Cubs.

I can agree with that. The newer parks are all smaller overall. One could say to bring the fans closer to the action ;D ;D

With the 2011 regular season now officially over, this topic is locked and closed.

Please use either the new MLB Playoffs - 2011 topic or the new Off-season 2011-12 / Hot Stove League topic in its place.

A new Around Baseball - 2012 topic will return when Spring Training opens in February 2012.

Would Kenny Williams entertain bring back Terry Francona back into the White Sox fold?

Ken Rosenthal at Fox Sports reporting the following:

Francona expected to leave Red Sox

Terry Francona will meet with Red Sox management on Friday morning, and the expected resolution is that he no longer will be the team’s manager, major league sources say.

While Francona’s departure is not certain, it is the likely outcome, in part because he is pressing for a resolution, sources say. He would not be fired; the Red Sox would simply decline their club options on him for 2012 and ’13.

I wouldn't mind seeing Francona as White Sox manager.

That said, I think we're looking to finish third again in the division (or worse), no matter what.

Third is highly likely next year depending on what moves KW makes and what financial restrictions Uncle Jerr puts on him. Also what will happen with Done? You cant keep such an albatros .160 hitter on the roster and aspire to 1st place. And there is going to have to be a pitching shakeup too.

Maybe give the guy a chance to show this year was a fluke? I think it's highly unlikely he repeats this performance next year.
