Can anyone tell me why people are calling this "the worst blown call ever"?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9LjarKHvTk&feature=player_embedded

Seems to me it's an awesome call by Jerry Meals.  The catcher whiffed.

-1 Karma for you for not warning us that Chip Carey's voice was prominent in the clip.

Every time I get fed up with the Sox and their organization, these guys seem to do something to make me realize that it could be worse.

Rios is our Fukudome, with an extra year + of contract.

But I think Rios can become a pretty good player again with a competent hitting coach.  Look at this clip from 2008 when he hit .291... see anything different?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaYC2IH9f3w&feature=related

I know Walker got him to drop his hands once he came over, but it's pretty clear to me that for him to be successful he needs to set up much, much higher.  I don't see how a 6'5" guy can hit with his hands down so low while in a semi-crouch.  IMO, he needs to mimic the approach another 6'5" guy takes...hands up high, no crouch, and slightly open:

But hey, I'm just a fan.  What do I know, right?

Detroit getting hammered today.  Their BP is pretty brutal.  We'll be 3 back going into the weekend.  If we can somehow gain one more game through the Yanks series, we'll be in excellent shape to be leading the division by 3 games going into Sept

wee bit o' good news -- Beckett pitched for Boston today, so we won't get shutout by him this weekend.

It is brutal, 4.65 ERA, right at the bottom of the league, only worse team is, NO, can it be? The Genious's bullpen.

EDIT: Additionally, Penny only gave them 3 1/3, so lots of wear to pile onto that already shytty pen. That is good.

We could very well be the tallest midget in the AL Central come September, but our offense needs to at least be mediocre to make it happen...

The Sox have the best team ERA in the AL Central.

The Sox also have the fewest runs scored in the AL Central.

Phillies and Braves are both losing so far and both only have 1 run. Maybe they'll start getting desperate for a bat!

I'm not sure I follow some of this. Pretty sure SoxRule is referring to Rios when mentioning teams desperate for a bat. I'd think they could find something better elsewhere (local pony league teams), but you never know.

Beyond Rios, I don't get ANY talk of moving Quentin. Isn't it the White Sox who are also desperate for offense? And there's interest in moving a guy with 62 RBI; an OBP of .353; OPS of .863; OPS of .825 2 outs, RISP; and an OPS of .927 late & close?

If the Sox get blown out of the race over the next 2 series, I can see it, but other than that, not so much.

Quentin would yield a lot, depending on whether or not your name is Wshfl.

The idea I think is for Viciedo to step right in.

The other side of the coin also is the thought, "could this offense POSSIBLY get worse?"  I'm not sure we know the answer to that one.

It really depends on what KW feels about this team. Does he believe in it fully? Sure we might be very much in the race still but unless a couple other guys beyond Konerko and Quentin start hitting we're probably not going very far anyway. So then there are a couple things to consider:

Does the org trust Quentin stay healthy every year? He does get hot at times but then he also has lots of cold streaks where he pops up on the first pitch. And yes, every hitter goes through cold streaks but that's when you have to decide if you want to sell high on a player. Our farm system is barren. If Quentin can net us 2-3 or 3-4 good to very good prospects it's something to consider for the future.

Unfortunately you have to give up quality to get quality.

Unless you are the one making deals with KW... then you can give up crap and get quality.
