I decided to take a gander at the standings today -- man, the AL is one big pile of suck.   Just one team that is more than 5 games above .500.

Wild card - just 4.0 games back...

What do you mean by that? Interleague has already begun since we faced the Dodgers.

So much for the streaking Twinkies as they're shut out by Seattle 3 - 0:

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2011_05_25_seamlb_minmlb_1&mode=wrap

This season the Twinkie's record is now 5-13 at Target Field.  The Humpdome home field advantage is long gone.

BTW, where are the "when are they going to fire Gardy" columns?  There sure were plenty of 'fire Ozzie' stories both locally and nationally when the White Sox were the cellar dwellers in the AL Central.  So why is the press going easy on the genius Gardenhire when his team has the worst record in MLB playing at a .333 clip?

You beat me bad Andy, I saw that when I was reading up when I got home. He was playing superior league down home for his hometown last year

Almost the end of may... and Cleveland has the best record in baseball... who'd have seen that coming?

Still don't think they can sustain it.  But even if they do, the only thing the Sox need to do to win the division is beat up on them.

I'm keeping my eye on Detroit, they strike me as the Sox real competition.

We have the Injuns number so far this year.  I'll bet it is just one of those quirky baseball things with no explanation.  Bad news for them though.

I didn't think there was a worse Chicago team than the Sox this year but I think the Cubs are winning that title.  I know they've been decimated by injuries but they were pretty terrible even before that.  Boy are they bad.

Twins are sinking like a rock and the Cubs are challenging Houston for last place in the NL.  Now if only the Yankees would start sucking wind....

It seems like every other day it's kablooey late in the game for the Twins or the Cubs and until recently, the Sox.

But for the Cubs and Sox, it's not quite as bad as it seems (not to say "good", just "not horrid"). Here's the ranking of teams by blown saves, which is kind of surprising. There are two teams, LAA and StL, ahead of MIN on that score, and both are strong contenders currently.

Here's the ranking of teams by blown saves

Check out the numbers for Quality Starts on the basic stats rankings.  Northside Failures are trailing the pack by a good-sized margin.

Quality starts...they should have a stat like that for position players.

Saw on MLB Network that the Tribe staff ERA over last 8 games is 8.22. Have kind of been waiting for that staff to falter.

Even if you look at their stats for the entire month of May, not that impressive. They're down there with some fairly not-good teams.

Unless they're going to buck the "less offense everywhere" trend (for instance, the only game where any team has scored 10 runs and lost this year is the season opener vs. the Sox, compare that to 5 or 10 years ago), they need to shore up that staff, or continue to hit, and a lot. A real lot.

I think they will continue to hit.  But there's no way that pitching staff is going to hold up throughout the season.

AL Central is a race between the Sox and Tigs.  Sox better take 2 of 3.  I'm conceding the Jackson v. Verlander game on Saturday.
