Trivia courtesy of espn.com:

Clint Hurdle is one of five active managers who have managed one team in a World Series and are now managing another team. Can you name the other four?

Tony LaRussa - If he counts since he is on leave.

Dusty Baker

Did Charlie Manuel ever get to the WS with the Indians?

That's all I can come up with.

LaRussa is one.

I got one other, missed on the other two.  One of which I thought should have been pretty easy.

Baker is two, did not think of him.

Thought about Manuel, but he did not manage in a series with Cleveland.

Joe Torre is an obvious choice, no?

Leyland is correct (and was the one I thought should have been obvious but I missed it).

The question was active managers -- so neither Sparky or Torre qualify.

Final manager was Bochy, I had him.  Thought for sure that Showalter was one, but I guess all of those Yankee crowns had Torre in charge.

How does someone with 7 no-hitters get tagged over-rated?

That is asinine in my book.

Well, Ryan wasn't on any World Series-winning teams other than his early 1969 Mets success (and that was before he became the "legend" Nolan Ryan).  His arrival on a new ballclub didn't improve the team, overall.  He was all about his own stats and not about helping his team; hence, he never won a Cy Young award.  His lifetime winning percentage was only .526.  He also walked more batters than anyone else in MLB history.  Typical arrogant Texan, too, if you ask me.

- 100 points for referencing Rob Neyer. You know he's a KC fan, don't you? I'm surprised he didn't try to make a HOF case for Dan Quisenberry.

How does that translate at all to baseball? Selfish bastard- all those Ks, depriving teammates of valuable assists and putouts. I bet he tagged runners out himself instead of flipping the ball to a fielder when he had the choice. Mediocre pitchers languishing in middle relief got screwed by him as well, all those complete games. What a p r i c k.

That being said, he was a great strikeout pitcher, but I agree with "meh" on him as an all-around pitcher.

Whatever... Neyer makes some good points.  The thing is, Ryan has some impressive career numbers only because of sheer longevity.  But if you look at percentages and the fact that he never got into a World Series (after pitching strictly in relief in '69), he doesn't come off that great.  He wasn't on any really awful teams, yet he couldn't bring in a winner.  He just wasn't a team player, IMO, and I'll stand by that.

He's no Jack Morris.

[rob neyer]

Dan Quisenberry finished in the top 5 in Cy Young voting 5 times.
He finished in the top 10 of MVP voting 4 times
He was a 3-time All-Star.
He led the league in Saves twice.
He is 31st in career saves.

At the height of his career, Quisenberry averaged 135 IP per year AS A CLOSER!

Legend has it that when Mariano Rivera first met Quisenberry, Quisenberry gave him a wedgie and told him to buy a cut fastball.

Sad news about one of baseball's all-time greats

Must have been a lot of German immigrants in Minnesota... hence, the tricolor motif on the uni sleeves...
