A Cub fan friend of mine isn't too pleased with me when I commented on his Facebook post ("Theo Epstein") with "Lou Piniella. Dusy Baker. Andy MacPhail. Sam Zell.  This is fun."

joe:  you forgot clown Kenny on that list.

Epstein's run a pretty good minor league system over there, and the Cubs have seemed willing to spend a lot of money in that area.  In fact, with a lot of contracts coming off the books, they certainly will have the cash to move over to drafting/signing and development.  Something that "all in" and the $127 MM payroll has prevented on the South Side.

I don't get the Theo love.  The guy has had the 2nd fattest checkbook in baseball for years.
I'm sure KW would be more successful if he could cherry pick from top free agents every year...

I don't know...Adam Dunn and Alex Rios (waiver wire) haven't exactly panned out.
FAs are tough to get right because you put them in an entirely new situation.

Epstein has drafted and traded well to keep them on top.

Ironically, it was his FA signing of Foulke in 2004 that was the key to their title that year.

Yeah, but the difference is the Red Sox can afford to miss on a big money FA here and there (see Carl Crawford and John Lackey).

If KW misses, there's no more payroll to cover up the mistakes...

Carl Crawford says hello.  Aren't most BoSox non home grown?

Pedroia/Ellsbury/Youk/lester/papelbon/lowrie/bard are the core... and pretty sure they were all home grown. atleast by ISF's standards since they spent some time in their minors and thus developed them.

they did steal ortiz from the twins.

That's a solid core, but we've developed:  Hudson, Morel, Beckham, Sale, Viciedo . . . err, Axelrod . . . .  Clayton Richard?

Epstein has made some really good deals but in the last couple years has made some pretty bad deals with big names/big money involved. How is that different from KW's performance over the past few years? Does Kenny not get the same leeway since the White Sox don't have the resources to cover his bad deals? Just askin.

How is [Theo's performance] different from KW's performance over the past few years?

Maybe this is oversimplifying things, but I will proffer this:  Pedroia vs. Beckham.

Oh my god... Kenny [metaphorically] killed Kinney!  You bastard!

Beckham > Pedroia, as far as pedigree coming out of college.

Beckham > Pedroia, as far as pedigree coming out of the minors.

Pedroia >> Beckham, as far as what's happened since they've been called up / worked with the major league hitting coach.

Just sayin'....

But giving the keys to Viciedo in right also means that they would be counting on him to provide more consistent power than he did during his one-month promotion, when he provided two extra base hits after Aug. 30.

Lots of pop to replace Quentin. Seems to me Lilli would be better suited for RF with Viviedo in LF. Lilli has more speed to get to balls that Viciedo cant.

Beckham played 59 games in the minors, Pedroia played 272.  I'm going to go out on a limb and say that player development is at least as much a factor as hitting coach.

“Since last year, this was about integrity, it was about loyalty, it was about do they want me here. Let me say it my way: The Sox were saying, ‘Yes, we want to f--- you, but we don’t want to marry you.’ ’’
No Ozzie; it's more like they f***ed the b***h and she turned out to be $%&$*%!

Perhaps Dr. Frank put it best:

Looks like the Cubs/Red Sox finally have agreed at compensation for Theo.   The hang-up was apparently over front office staff that Theo wanted to take with him, but also the fact that the Cub end of negotiations was handled by Ricketts and Crane Kenny.  The deal went through when Ricketts negotiated for Theo to be joined by Yale-educated wunderkind Peter Brand.

There's another report in which the Red Sox owner said that is bogus and a deal is not close.   Who knows what really is going on -- and I wouldn't be shocked if  it were Ricketts who is bungling this -- but if it it John Henry playing hardball as some suggest, if I were Ricketts, I'd tell him to go f*ck himself.

I would too but the Cubs have their backs against the wall now. The town is so abuzz with Epstein coming here that the Cubs can't possibly back out now. Sure, the true diehards who are follwing the story might be okay with it but the mass population of Cub fans in Chicago, as well as the media, would rip the Cubs for how this was handled. Boston has the leverage.

Boy, between the Cubs always being a laughinstock and the Sox' front office fighting that just went on as well as hiring a coaching staff that had many shaking their heads, Chicago baseball must be a big joke to everyone right now.
